    Council tax

    What's everyone paying then?

Ours has gone up by the usual maximum 4.99%, plus the London Mayor's share so 5.7% in total.

In Band D so now paying £220 a month.

It's gone up, yup we're around £200 PM as well, unlike the muppets on the usual social media platforms I don't blame the local council, they're firefighting, we should all be asking where our money has disappeared to over the last 14 years? Anything else I say is in danger of drifting out of G&D territory.

Gone from £182 to £199 in ten payments a year starting April. No complaint for myself but £17 a month is a lot if your struggling.

4 beds and 2 bogs, S Yorks isn't the priciest place by a long way.

Circa. £3,850 p.a. which is scandalous IMO, it's nothing but a stealth tax.

The fact they charge a further £30 p.a. on top to collect the wheelie bins is another story!

Band E £253pm over 10 mths. We are told it’s one of the lowest in the country.

I’d rather pay a little more and get some half decent services.

£2,600. Band E. Hampshire. An increase of 4.6%.

£355/month over 10 months. All that for monthly bin collections (got to pay a private contractor for garden waste), 50-60 kids to a class in primary schools from September etc.

Council seem incapable of managing money responsibly. Could give them £1000/mo and it still wouldn’t be enough.

We’ve been told to expect another 9-10% increase next year, too.

Same band, £2690, as usual up the full amount before have to ask higher up the food chain; this is with a dip into the reserves as overspent in year, plus currently ~£60pa for green bin (started ~£40) before they hoist it in June.

I'd rather they offered better value for money but aware that central government have reduced contributions over the years (i.e. our income tax, NI tax, car insurance tax, VAT , fuel duty+VAT, energy tax etc) but increased "local" responsibilities.

The local business rates have killed off anything other than big chains in town centre, and even some of them have disappeared, so more for us plebs with no choice to bridge the gap.

But the future for a lot could be like Birmingham with 21% increase over two years approved (without consultation) and service cuts... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...ngham-68342493

Ours has gone up from £140 to £147 (10 mths). Nothing compared to what many of you are paying I'm sure. We also have to pay an extra £44 pa for the green bin as there is no way we could keep the place tidy without it - which is another extra scam. Anyhow, all this stuff keeps going up which is a worry when you're on a very modest fixed income. Standard of surviving just keeps getting hammered!

Ok, so my green bin I’ve just paid and it’s £89 Pa.
So council tax at £335 and double what other are paying for green waste. Well done West Sussex!

    Agree

The Thurrock story is staggering in scale of both money and incompetence

They are now suing to retrieve £ 655'000'000 best of luck with that

Band B, and we pay £1940 - Cornwall - 3 bed house. A Band D property would be £2492 pa

As opposed to 420e we paid last year in NW France. 2 Bed house, with half an acre of garden and a further half acre pond........ sometimes I could kick myself for moving back to the UK

FWIW you can choose to pay in 12 monthly installments (instead of 10) as well as choosing one of several dates in the month for the DDM.

Quite a spread. Interesting to see the differences in charges for same banding, depending on location.

Services across every council must be broadly similar so how can some councils afford to charge less? Population density, demographic, etc?

  27. #27
£2400 a year and there is no bus service within 3 miles and no road gritting within 3 miles.

Crazy pot holes everywhere, never see any Police about doing anything. I have no idea where all the money goes except the Gov giving Hotels 8 Million a day to house people who are not British.

£2,655 for the year, before Water and Waste charges.

But the road gets gritted and ploughed every time they are out.

Brum here. Will be going up 21% over the next two years.

  30. #30
£4100 , most goes to Essex CC and the police, 13.5% goes to the local council, I'd love to know exactly where the money goes, fat civil servants with nice pensions, it's not going on housing, road maintenance or care for the old and infirm.

£3,193 here. And they can't even clean out the roadside gullies, blaming the flooding on climate change.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

    Harrow - Band F, £275 a month, paid over 12 months not 10.
Re the comments above, one of my running friends here works for Harrow Council, the Civic Centre is half a mile from their house, they have not been into the office for three years!

I imagine that factors will include the reasons you mention, alongside the mix of house bandings within each council.

Just over £4500pa (band H but goodness knows why) - then estate management charge adds around £1500. May move later this year!

Is it still the case that up to 20% (or more..) of council tax revenue goes straight into the pension pot?

I won’t pay £65 Pa for garden waste - I’m about 5 mins from the council tip

Ours has gone up - band F.

    Increases are:

    Council = 4%

    Greater London Authority = 8.6%

Adult social care precept = 2%

    £3418 in total.

    Around £342 a month over 10 months.
    Cheers,
