    Bi-Compax / Twin Register Chronographs

I'm currently looking to pick up a Breitling Aerospace on a £1500 budget, but I'd also be interested in a (non vintage) chronograph with 2 registers. Is this even possible used? What would I be looking at?

    A few rules:

    Size: 39mm - 42mm
Date: Either none or at 6
    Subdials: at 9 and 3
Movement: No "bolt on top" chronograph modules
Dial Markers: No "cut off" numbers
    Thickness: 10-15mm

I say "no vintage" because I prefer the build, robustness and finish of modern watches.

Here's a couple of examples of some beautiful looking, but out of budget, watches:

Anyone know of anything that fits the bill? Or is the budget just too low for a chronograph like this? (a totally acceptable answer!)

I was thinking the same, but then again I don't know enough about movements to know what counts as 'bolted on'!

You could buy the Breitling and also pick up a classic Poljot 3133 mechanical chronograph. Julian Kampmann has a decent selection to browse at Poljot24.de although you can often find the models cheaper elsewhere. Second hand prices do seem to be going a bit batsh*t crazy lately for certain 3133 models.

    Strela?

    Perhaps a Sturmanskie?

Plenty of used Sinns within budget, look for the 103 which has a 7750 iirc. That Hamilton is £2k RRP, too expensive at that price.

I thought I couldn't find that Hamilton in budget... that explains why.

Sadly I can't get on board with the Sinn 103, the asymmetry of a 6, 9, 12 register dial is really offputting...

Can I just clear this up (again).

Bi-Compax doesn't properly exist, and even if it did, it doesn't mean this.

Universal Geneve invented the Compax term in reference to the complications of their own chronographs. It is their phrase, and theirs alone - no other company puts it on their dials

    • A chrono with sub-dials at 3-6-9 has always been a Compax. Launched 1935
    • A chrono with sub-dials at 3-6-9-12 is a Tri-Compax (with the 12-sub-dial being Calendar-moonphase). Launched 1943
    • Aero-Compax, chrono with sub-dials at 3-6-9-12, this time the 12 being an aide-memoire dial that was separately set to a static time using a secondary crown. Launched 1940
    • A chrono with sub-dials at 3 and 9 has always been a Uni-Compax. Launched 1936

So, what the OP means is a Uni-compax, or 2-register chrono.
And, the inventors of the Compax term never used the phrase Bi-Compax.
However, because they did have a Uni- and a Tri-, if they had used the term Bi-Compax, it would have meant a 3-register chrono.

Anyhow, back on topic, my contribution would be the recently re-released Kemmner vintage chrono, now to be had in black or blue.

Top end size wise, Seagull movement, and comfortably in budget, in fact you could buy 3. His Ebay account doesn't have any listed just now, but they are available.

    It just isn't a Bi-Compax, that's all.

    how about the stowa 1938?

I used to own one and absolutely loved it! Wouldn't mind picking up another at some point. Loved the applied numerals and recessed dials, thought it gave a nice "depth" to the watch. available in date, non date, cream and black dial versions....

    fit your requirements i think!

Another kickstarter one is the marloe lomond, also way under budget. Not sure if the movement meets your requirements though.

I have a beautiful Sinn 358le currently for sale at £1500 on SC, so definitely not out of your budget.

My exact budget is £1400 as £1500 was what I was hoping to get for the watch I was selling.

Only 6.7% less than I wanted, so a fair price I thought.

I looked at it, but in the end I couldn't find a model I liked entirely. One of them had the annoying 4:30 date window!

I agree, you are correct after all, the Sinn is out of your budget but there are some great alternatives. Happy hunting.

Sorry to be a thread spoiler but checking back your Sinn was up on SC for circa £1,300 previously.

It was, prior to going back to Sinn, if you can find a cheaper watch in the same condition, buy it.
They really are a beautiful watch and at £1500 are great value for money.
