I just use the washing machine for mine. Comes out nice and clean and fully wound.

If it was automatic it would work even better

Not super efficient since it would only wind at very, very slow speeds. The centrifugal force would keep the winding weight facing towards the outside of the wheel.

    Apart from that, brilliantly funny!

a worn down wheel on the bench grinder is perfect to get it strapped round and let it rip!

Won't work. Too fast. See above. Once the G force of the centrifugal rotation is greater than gravity, the winding weight will remain stationary.

    Just being pedantic.

You need something which rotates or oscillates relatively slowly.

Got to say now that’s a first! Ever thought about using the washing machine?....if your watch is waterproof that would give it a good wind

Is it not the case that large household appliances create strong emf which may be detrimental.

This is the right speed but only if the microwave is tilted to allow gravity to rotate the winding weight. Am I right in thinking the hi frequency ac will de-magnetize the watch?
The only problem is the microwave may get destroyed before the watch is fully wound.

In electronics, EMF stands for electro motive force better known as voltage. If as I suspect, you are meaning it to stand for electro magnetic force, then since the voltage running domestic equipment is AC, the magnetism would be rapidly changing polarity at 50hz in the UK and the EU, and 60hz in the US. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you can magnetise anything with alternating current.

So the quest continues for an everyday object for winding watches.

We need to discount any type of oven from the search. I've tried them, all including the steam oven rotisserie thing that my wife has never switched on.

A mop. Strap the watch to a mop and swab all the floors. Two birds, one stone. :)

    And complete

    Dual purpose unit too!

The sausages can be squished to fit all strap sizes ensuring a good grip, just think how shiny your PCLs will be from all that lovely fat.

Plus the added bonus of perfectly timed / cooked meats

    ^^^^

Wouldn't work lack of tilt, the rotor would be at 9 o'clock and stay there

That pic has made me incredibly hungry as I only had a sainsbury's sandwich for lunch.

The record turntable, at an angle with the watch face down on it and running at 33 rpm would probably work, and you'd get to see if the self winding rotor stayed pointing downwards whilst listening to slowhand. Would it autostop after eric clapton has finished?

£99. Almost worth buying one just to have a really interesting way of winding a watch.

    Lightbulb

Hmm. No one's suggested attaching the watch to a Drum major's mace during a performance. The up and down, all around, movements will surely wind an automatic watch, and in grand style. Oom-pah-pah, indeed.
