    The TZUK Speedmaster Thread

Answering a request from the Friday thread here is my modern Speedmaster on a 1479 bracelet to give it a bit of a vintage hint.
I know many loves here the Speedy on leather, but IMHO it should be worn on either a Velcro (in case you are wearing a space suit), or on bracelet. The 1479 is from the 90s and it was apparently the second solid links Speedy bracelet (?) Apart from the look I love it for creating way shorter virtual lug to lug size comparing to modern Speedy bracelets. In fact the 812 end links needed a bit of modding, but invisible and I'm happy with the result.

    Looks good!

Interesting to note that the selection glimpsed briefly in the recent Buzz Aldrin / George Clooney short film were all on leather straps

I don't like bracelets and on the Speedmaster I think that it detracts from the beauty and functionality of the watch itself. The GB Champions as used by the NASA astronauts look kind of OK mainly due to the straight end links so there is a clear delineation between the watch and the bracelet.

I'm not that keen on croc straps and for me a rally style strap is the best leather option.

I alternate mine between leather and Velcro.

In theory the end pieces should slot straight in. What modification was needed? I'm interested as I also have this bracelet. I've never bothered to fit it but I'm now wondering what kind of task I might be taking on!

I didn't expect any problems, however the 812 end links didn't fit straight on my 3570.50 Speedmaster.
So the top surface of the little tabs on the end links had to be filed a bit otherwise the springbars would never reach the case holes. I found it discussed here:
    http://forums.watchuseek.com/f20/mou...le-851064.html
The modification is invisible when fitted, however has to be done
carefully. Now I have a perfect fit without any gap to the case or a slightest move to the end links. But naturally this mod is irreversible, meaning the end links fit now only to modern Speedies perfectly.

You are right, I had seen images from Tet on the OF (as he is known there) with the brown strap on and I assumed it was that - but it's not.

It is all rather easier there. They can be sniffy if your first post is about a watch you got from your 'uncle' with a whats it worth question but otherwise it is pretty friendly. There have been idiots there but they don't last long, the moderation is flexible but not infinitely patient. I rather like it!

It is indeed, well spotted. I've tried quite a few straps now but this is the one I like the most so that's what it's staying on for now.

I did like the original strap mind you. I'm a fan of the Hirsch Rally, used to wear my Apollo-Soyuz on the black/red one.

Wow. You cannot post that without more detail. Model number, bracelet number, age etc and why isn't this in the vintage Speedmaster thread.

A nice bit of pre-moon don going on there...

Hi I was trying to experiment with photos as photo bucket seems to of stopped working. So I opened tz app and it seems you can upload photos directly from your camera roll with the I phone. Anyway it's a 145.012.65, archive report from omega lists it leaving them in Dec 66. I bought it from the original owner and now I need to make way for something new so I'm just putting an advert together and I will list it here today or tomorrow.

Be careful not to under sell it. It might be worth popping over to the Omega Forum and checking the prices on the private watch sales thread.

Cheers will do as on bay prices seem crazy and that's if you can find one for sale.

Well it's my 37th birthday today and the Mrs bought me the Lego Saturn V!
I also have the day off so...
What better way to regress to childhood by building a Lego rocket wearing a Speedmaster...
    Yes I am sad
    Yes I need a life
    It's better than work though

The instruction book has some cool pictures in it and a short history of the mission.

I must admit I'm getting quite excited about the new Speedmasters, I've been invited to a dinner later in the week and Omega will show the new versions and some older vintage models. I will take my camera and update on Friday at some point.

I enquired about the new Speedmaster - sorry i forget the name now - the one that's part of the three watch set - I didnt realise how limited / "hot" it was, and was practically laughed at by the AD when I asked if he could get me one!

Such a shame, as it's one of the best in a very long time.

The set of 3 is still available, but I dont fancy buying the Railmaster / Seamaster and the added premium just to get the Speedmaster.

Look forwards to seeing the photos MW.

serious question. I have read on this forum that some members think the Speedy Pro was poor when it comes to water resistance. It is rated at 5ATM, so I presume its perfectly OK for swimming with etc?
I am on the brink of buying one and getting a waterproof strap for it, will use the watch on holidays, in the shower etc (I tend not to take my watch off during the week).
The comments on this forum regarding the water resistance have made me hesitate, should I be at all concerned?

Well it has 2 pushers plus a non screw down crown so there are 2 extra points of possible entry over a 3 hander. If you avoid pressing the pushers under water you are probably fine, I would also avoid touching the crown and obviously avoid knocking the plexiglass crystal into rock etc, though that would equally apply with a mineral or sapphire crystal watch. IMO you are probably fine but if you really want to get a watch wet, get something cheap which is specifically designed for it, the Speedmaster isn't. This debate crops up a lot and usually generates a heated debate, when Omega say 50m they mean it and it can be relied on but that is only true of the day they test the watch, many years down the line it may not be so testing isn't a bad idea if the watch hasn't been recently serviced.

You should be fine then. Ingress does happen with new watches, I have seem pics of more than one nearly new Speedmaster with a fogged crystal but if it does occur under normal use it should be a warranty claim issue I should think and I should think it is incredibly rare.

lol, another question, the box comes with two velcro straps? I presume one of them is sized for normal use and the other is the space suit version? (should anyone ever need it!)

20mm on Speedy Pro. 19mm on the the similar non-pro versions with straight lugs and no crown guards such as the CK2998, FOIS, 1957 LE etc.

    Correct

Neither of which are as good as many aftermarket alternatives.
