    SOTC Part 1

It’s been just over three years into this game for me and there’s been a fair bit of change to the collection (especially in years one and two).

I seem to have been through most of the WIS stages:

    • Putting everything on a NATO
    • Buying an SKX, modifying an SKX, owning several SKXs, owning no SKXs
    • Modifying Monsters and Vostoks
    • Making my own straps
    • Building a watch
    • Tinkering with movements (with varying degrees of success)
    • Starting a few projects; not completing a few projects
    • Spending way too much time on various watch forums
    • Replacing lots of batteries for friends & family

Things have settled down a fair bit recently, although there’s always something on the wish list. It’s been a while since I did a SOTC, but since the loss of my Photobucket account for unknown (ahem) reasons, previous ones have lost all the pictures.

I’ll put these in rough chronological order:

    Planet Ocean (45.5mm)

Probably my worst purchase in terms of residual value (purchased at full AD price), this is the one that really got me into watches. I was having a battery changed on a Seamaster and decided to try a few on while I was waiting, including an Explorer II and a Breitling; this one got chosen. Didn’t get a lot of wear while the collection expanded (felt huge compared to some of the vintage pieces) and is now my gym/holiday/night-out-with-the-boys watch. If I wasn’t going to lose such a chunk of money on it, I’d probably sell it. Currently with a mate who wanted to borrow something for an important business meeting – must get is back!

    Vostok Amphibia

Another one that isn’t getting worn (it’s also running a bit fast), modified with a no-date dial, a DM bezel and insert from Dagaz. Still can’t get over what great watches these are for the money - ok, I know the quality isn’t brilliant, but they’re perfect for enthusiasm and variety on a budget.

    5513

The classic dive watch, this one dates from 1966 and has been a firm favourite. With lovely aged lume with the meters first dial, this was my first substantial purchase from the forum. Still gets worn regularly, but has been on an original tropic for some time. Can’t believe it will be 50 next year – keeps excellent time and the power reserve is surprising. Also love the fact that to most people, it doesn’t look like a Rolex.

    Self-build

Not sure when I completed this one as it took a while, but it was a very satisfying project sourcing all the bits and pieces (although it never gets worn!)
It’s an Asian clone 2836 movement with added GMT functionality.

    Speedmaster MKII

Bought this as a birthday watch from a Dutch dealer on Chrono24. It comes with the original sales paperwork from November 1970, although the serial number dates it to ’69. It wasn’t in the best shape cosmetically when I got it, but it went off to Rocco to work his magic and it now looks fabulous. It’s pictured on a custom strap from Giuliano, but it’s currently on the original bracelet. This is a lovely proportioned watch and the splash of colour makes it subtly stand out.

    Heuer 73663

Although this wasn’t my first Heuer (that was a 150.573F Carerra) or my first Autavia, I fell in love with this one due to the lovely colour combination and very comfortable slim case. Bought from Nic ‘Heuerboy’ Green, this has been a firm favourite since I acquired it.

    Vostok ministry case

Bought as a holiday beater, this one has been modified with a ‘Boris’ bezel and an insert from an SKX011.

    Heuer 11630 GMT

First saw this on a visit to Tony ‘Loving-to-Flip’ Angel – I can’t remember what I’d popped over for (I think I was buying a vintage Omega, but can’t be sure). A while later, he offered it up for sale and I had to have it (there were a couple of swift departures to raise funds). This is one of, if not the, best condition Autavia GMTs out there and I recently managed to get hold of a BoR to compliment it. It’s a fair chunk of metal and the colours are just beautiful.

    Philip Caribbean

This came as part of a trade package with another TZer and friend Daniel (‘afiercepancake’). This really cheers up the dullest day with its absolutely exquisite textured dial. The monoblock case made this (I believe) the first production 1000m dive watches from the Jenny stable and shares the same design and construction with a number of other manufacturer brands.
    There’s a nice write-up on Rich Askham’s website:

    http://thewatchspotblog.com/?tag=philip-watch

    Lemania 5012

Another one that came from Daniel, this rather rare Lemania sits in a Sinn 140/142 case. Loads of wrist presence with this one and just that little bit special. It’s a great ‘T-shirt & Jeans’ weekend watch.

    Certina DS2

Bought this on a bit of a whim from SC and have never worn it! It could do with a little trip to the spa, might get around to it one day, or might just move it on.

    Heuer 1550 Bund

I’ve loved that Bund design since I first set eyes on it (I think over at Nic’s) and found this over on the German UHR forum. It’s got the bund stock number on the case back and wears very comfortably on a NATO. Another good casual watch.

    Omega Montreal/Albatross/Scoreboard

Another TZ trade, but this time with Omar (o u t a t i m e). This is a fantastic piece – I just love the very individual look and ‘70s styling. Surprisingly comfortable to wear, this one probably attracts the most comments of any of my watches. Most people think it’s a modern fashion watch and seem to be genuinely interested (even if they’re not, I tell them anyway) in the ’76 Montreal connection.

    Heuer Monnin

Regarded as the watch that ‘saved Heuer’, these are fairly hard to come by (unless you happen to be named Dave ‘Blackie’ Black). A really nice under-the-radar piece, this one has been enhanced with the correct type bezel that are really hard to come across – I stumbled upon an obscure 844 cased quartz diver with the bezel on eBay, which I promptly paid over the odds for, just to complete the original look. Another one on an original Tropic strap.

    Zentra Safari

The bezel donor watch, never worn!

    Casio

Not sure why or when I bought this – I think it may have been after some drunken internet browsing. At least it wasn’t expensive. It’ll probably spend the rest of its days in the safe!

    Monster

This was the one that caused me to sell three SKXs, as I stopped wearing all of them! The lack of winding did annoy me a bit, so I bought a second gen version when they came out and swapped the movements over giving me the best of both worlds; improved movement and more subtle 1st gen dial and hands. The yobokies BoR really suits this and it’s my current beater.

I also have a second Monster (Gen 1 movement and Gen 2 dial and hands, but no pictures). It never gets worn.

    Heuer 980.007

I picked up this one from eBay as a non-runner. It was in a dreadful state and had rather a lot of DNA in every crevice.

This was lovingly bought back to life (I managed to get the 536.121 movement going), with a replacement crystal and the bracelet that came with the Monnin.

Seems to be my wearing-around-the-house default watch. It was a bit of a gamble, but ultimately paid off.

I had toyed with putting a better condition bezel on it, but changed my mind – it’s had a hard life and it’s quite nice to have a reminder of that.

    Some 'before' photos:

    Philip Caribbean No. 2

Another impulsive purchase! It doesn’t get worn too much, as I would generally pick the yellow one if I fancy wearing a bit of colour.

    Heuer Carrera

Another deal done with Omar for this delightful 1153N – slightly smaller than the Autavias and in lovely condition.

    Part 2

    Heuer 2446

Another purchase from Nic for this 3rd Execution snap-back cased Autavia and another manual Heuer. In very nice condition, this gets a lot of outings for work. Mounted on one of Abel’s replica corfams. And probably the photograph that I'm most happy with!

    City Professional

I’d had this for a short while before from Daniel on a trade that got reversed. A while later, he offered it for sale and I couldn’t say no. A lovely combination of an 844 type case and Jenny yellow sparkly dial from this little known brand.

    Heuer project

This has been assembled from various parts collected over a period of time. I need to have a go at colour matching the hands, but I doubt I’ll ever wear it as this case size is just a bit too small for me.

    Vostok Holiday Beater

I’d owned an 090 case watch before and fancied another one, but specifically wanted a white dial. This is combination of a dial and movement from a 100 cased watch, an 090 case from Zenitar, a Boris bezel, a Dagaz insert and a NOS 22mm Tropic. I think all the bits cost double the amount of the original watch, but it got the desired result.

    Vostok 710SE

Filling the gap until an all-lume Heuer 844 shows up! The OEM rubber strap is surprisingly comfortable.

    Lemania ‘Silverstone’

I’d been on the hunt for one of these, specifically Lemania branded and with the blue Herringbone dial. It arrived from Sweden last week, but unfortunately looked like it took a knock in transit that seems to have misaligned a couple of hands. It’s currently with Rich to hopefully sort out, but I took a quick snap before sending off.

It’s got a NOS 22mm tropic waiting for it on return.

And finally, the other half’s Heuer collection (as it helps me to indulge myself without too much flak!).

I’ve met some really great guys through the forum and have witnessed some really inspiring acts of generosity and camaraderie in my time here (as well as some utterly incomprehensible behaviour from some utter bellends). It takes all sorts!

I hope you’ve enjoyed my short journey!

Nice collection. I especially like the Seamaster and the Submariner, but that might be because I was born in 66 as well.

Lovely, eclectic collection, Ed - and it was a Seamaster 60, from memory. Which sees the most wrist time?

Actually, your post has made me realise that I sold three watches I shouldn't have sold - "our" Autavia GMT, a Sinn 140/142 and a Heur Bund. Still, they're only watches, right?

Ah yes, it was the 60. Thanks for the reminder Tony!

If this is 3 years of effort then I can't imagine how your collection will look like in 5 years time. Great to see such a diverse collection and I would have a hard time to pick a favorite.
Fantastic that you took the time to explain a bit of history of each watch instead of just posting pictures.

Some lovely heuer chronographs there. My pick would be the manual wind autavia with siffert colours - better than the automatic models for me due to the case size and dial symmetry.

It really is a lovely piece - the manuals do seem to get overlooked a little.

Thanks Simon - sounds like a plan.....

What a great collection and history. I owned a Lemania Silverstone, stunning watch and deserving of the word, rare. Apart from Helmut Sinn's, yours is the third I've ever come across. Pretty sure Blackie has my old one. Well done finding one!

I know you owned one Aaron - it was yours that made me want one! I did contact Dave and he wasn't prepared to let his go, so I'm really pleased I managed to find one.

    Wow, what a stunning collection.

Are you sure that you are not called Tony (Learningtofly)?

    Your photos are beautiful.

Thank you - and I'm quite flattered to have my pictures compared to Tony's

Nice collection there ... Planet ocean is next on my list, what would you expect to pay for an early 8500 movement ?

RRP last time I looked was £3950, but could easily get 15-20% off that.

I'd guess at £2.2 to £2.5k second hand, depending on condition and completeness.
