Watch winders - good idea or ready made haul or burglars

My wife bought me a double winder about 3 years ago, I used it as intended but was always somewhat paranoid about it. The unit wasn't cheap by any means and a nice piece of rosewood but I always felt that it was tantamount to a gift box to anyone who broke in. The winder stopped working about 6 month as ago and I can honestly say I haven't tried too hard to get it fixed, preferring to store my watches in a less accessible fashion.
What are general views on these devices and does anyone else share my paranoia :-)

Ah, I'd done some trawling before posting but not gone back that far. I think I may try and fix it and face my wife's displeasure by putting it on eBay!
The theft thing does worry me, I'd not considered any mechanical issues

Nice gadget, but what's the point, unless you have moonphase or date without quickset.

    It's a gizmo best avoided.

My view is that if someone has broken in then, at that stage, whether or not your watches are in a watch winder is a minor concern.

If you find the winder useful then keep it. Simple as that, to my mind.

Personally I find a watch winder useful for keeping moon phase watches up to date.

    As always, cheap is expensive.
I think it's better to pay a little more for one good watchwinder as a cheaper one.

My two Zeniths were on a watch winder when my house was burgled, and of course the watches went along with the TV, my cameras etc. But cash in an envelope and some jewellery was missed as they weren't in an obvious place, though not hidden as such. Burglers don't have much time usually, the police told me they want to be in and out as fast as possible, watches on a winder are easy pickings. My watches are always kept in a safe now, in fact I'm thinking of investing in a bigger, heavier safe next year.

Using a watch winder for an Omega

I just came across this and can't recall having seen it before:

I recently bought one for my wife's Airking. She is long haul aircrew and is often away for 4 or 5 days and this little thing keeps her watch wound perfectly. Best thing? It's battery operated and lives in the safe. Battery life is 3 years. It's dead quiet (one of the most important things to us) and the small safe is well hidden so I am not concerned with it being nicked.

Generally speaking, they're worse than useless. It's a nice thought from the wife, but I wouldn't be too fussed about reinstating it after failure, either.
