    70s child seeks 70s watch

..no idea why (early midlife crisis?) but I'm really craving something retro to wear on my wrist at the moment - something a little different and in keeping with my age :-)

My only decent watch is an Omega so I'm drawn to them as a brand, perhaps a vintage Seamaster of some kind would be perfect.

    The wish list:

    - Chunky, certainly no smaller than my SMP if poss
    - Will take a chunky leather strap and look good with it
    - <£500
    - Has to be the real deal!

..not fussed about boxes, original parts (within reason) etc.. as I'm going to wear this thing :-)

Few that leap out at me, please critique at will:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/OMEGA-GENEVE-MEGA ... 909wt_1042
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/70s-OMEGA-SEAMAST ... 293wt_1042
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Omega-Seamaster-n ... 541wt_1042

    Help appreciated!
    Cheers,
    M

They're all very nice, I could not decide among those myself. Perhaps the megaquartz one, since it's not only 70's by design, but by technology as well.

Omega's are great watches, but here is a non-Omega suggestion: My favourite retro 70's watch is my Tissot T-12 (so much so, I have two!). Very big/chunky and very quirky 70's. You can get an Auto or an Electronic (not Quartz) and there are a couple of interesting variants. I love the bezel under the crystal.

It may not quite meet all your requirements though (i.e. not sure how easy it would be to fit a leather strap).

    EDIT
I stand corrected - this one appears to be on a leather strap http://i.ebayimg.com/00/$%28KGrHqV,!lsE ... ~~0_35.JPG and looks good!

Nothing more seventies than a LED watch.

Omega made them too if main stream swiss big brand rocks your boat.
As did Longines and even JLC to name just a few.

Probably thé most emblematic however is the Pulsar P3.

Here President Ford with his 1974 Pulsar P4:

´James Bond´ wore the P2 but that is not nearly as ´typical´.

Quite fashionable nowadays, that Pulsar LED too.
The original ones are being revised big time, it availeable as modern copy or as modern homage with LCD by Hamilton even.

If you were born before 1975 or so then in my view an ideal birthday watch is a Seiko Bell-Matic. The cool thing with Seikos is that you can identify not just the year but the month of manufacture.

On the subject of Seiko......it doesn't really meet the criteria completely ie it's not a 'chunky' leather strap, but it does have a certain wrist presence, screams out 70's and is original...a 613-0011 UFO (this one October 1976)

    You could also look out for a 6138-0040 Bullhead....takes a 'chunkier' strap...again,screams 70's and a definite wrist presence :)
    This one is Feb 1979

First or last one for me.

Whilst I am a massive Omega fan, I don't think any of them really say 70's, all a bit reserved.

How about some vintage Heuer's? One over budget as this is a shop rather than ebay and another bang on:

I've been going through that nostalgic phase too, fond memories of a 70's childhood. The Seiko chrono's look superb, as does the Omega quartz.
After looking around for a while, I settled on this 1971 Seiko bellmatic:

All stunning options, especially the Seikos, but I'm stuck on an Omega for better or for worse :-)

..I love the LED ones, but all the ones I saw were out of budget or the gold variant which I'm not keen on.

Out of the rest the Megaquartz is drawing me closer. Anyone got one? How large are they on the wrist? And will they take a leather strap well?

    Thanks!

I like the last one, from your choices. It's maybe (hard to tell from the picture) a little over polished.

I got this one, recently, for considerably under you budget, I think it sums up the 70's.

The seikos in this thread are really nice too.... especially the Bullhead.

Last one draws me too...but I suspect it might go too high for my pockets.

Love yours! Leather strap compliant??? Dont know why I'm obsessed about chunky leather straps at the moment, quite worrying really.

..what is 'considerably less' by the way? :-)

    I love the bullhead too.

I got it on ebay for £300. A bargain really. No reason why you couldn't fit a leather strap, the ladies version came with one.

I'm wearing this one today; from about 1971: Omega Geneve "Hard Metal" - picked this one up dead on your budget. It's big - 44x48mm on leather too!

The photo exaggerates the size a bit, it wears smaller than it looks.

That is a monster! Chrome not for me though.

Fair enough - it's not chrome though - it's steel bombarded with tungsten - it makes the case very hard and scratch resistant - it's hard enough to scratch stainless steel and be unmarked itself!

Re: 70s child seeks 70s watch

Since this has gone off topic of Omega, I'll abuse the opportunity for a couple of gratuitous shots of my Seiko 6138-8050:

This is I believe the least 70-ish of the lot, others are even more appropriate, the Darth UFO or the Oxen head or so :)

    Great movement too :D:

Agree on Heuer, but not on the Ickx. It's in a totally different league than the other Heuer's from the era. And not a good league...unfortunately, their good chrono's are out of your indicated budget.

That is absolutely stunning. I think I want one now. Drat.

I love those cushion cases from the early 70s. I think that's why I like Bell-Matics from that timeframe too.
