Thinkin bout a G (Shock) 'Thang

I've always liked the look of some G-Shocks but wearing office wear 5 days a week it never made sense. With more casual attire these days I can see one working in more easily.

    But...

I like the CasiOak / GA2100 but if I own a G Shock I'd like to have solar and radio control.

That led me to the GW-7900's. It's got the features and looks nice enough -
but it doesn't drive me wild. It doesn't quote have the 90's techy craziness I'd like.

    So, TZ experts:

    - What are the other options?

    - Is vintage a good option with G Shocks?

I'd say one of the new Bluetooth 5600s, if available. The screen seems clearer and the buttons a little more proud so easier to press:

    https://www.casio-europe.com/euro/pr...w-b5600bc-1er/

Solar and multi band too, and can still see the time while in stopwatch and countdown timer.

I have one of these (though mine is all black with negative display) and I love it.

I’m also considering picking up one of the GBX-100 line but they seem to have mixed reviews

Or even a 6900, the GW6900-1 is solar and multi band if you can find one.

If only they did the new 5600/5000 with a screwback case but regular rubber bezel and strap.

Yes. I have the GW M5610 and it is two flaws away from perfection. The pushers sit too low and the alarm is too quiet, both of which the F91W gets right.

I was addicted to buying g-shocks at one point. Did a mega culling and now left with these 5. The GA2100 is my favourite at the moment. Super legible and comfortable, but no t solar and not multi band. The rest are solar and have atomic time.

Thanks all. I'll check all of those out.

I should have said this at the start and lessened the chances of a lynching....I don't think I really encountered squares until I got into watches, so rounds(?) were my intro.

I love the visible evolution in the squares but try as I might they don't excite me as much (*runs to hide*). Also as the tech is there, I'm tempted to have some features I don't have on mechanical watches (moonphase, tides, GMT).

    Any round recommendations amongst pitchforks?

    R

I like the blue/red one of those and hadn't seen it before....can't find one available though!

You've got me looking for rare models before I've got started ;)

Glad to hear people getting on with the negative displays because they look great to me but there seem to be lots of complaints around.

That's basically my mental image when you I think G-Shock. Thanks.

Is there anything I need to be aware of when looking for discontinued models? Fakes, frankenwatches etc.

You hit the nail on the head with the 7900. Not massive (for a g) moon and tide is a bit of a cool novelty, not loads of script, can have dual time display in the main screen, some great movie pedigree!

The old style G shock Gulfman GW-9110 is a cracker of a watch. 👍🏻

I think it's probably only a worry for very old screwback squares and the various limited edition dw6900 or dw5600s.

I only dip in and look now and then, I'm surprised to find the two I quoted not current models.

Might be possible to still find them new in the windows of some random shops like F. Hinds, etc.

    I've owned a few...

And a bright yellow Frogman, but I can't find a picture right now, and some others I have doubtless forgotten.

    I kept only this one...

    The GW-5000-1JF

Made in Japan, DLC screw back, tough solar multi band.

I think it's the finest iteration of G Shock, un-improvable (I prefer non-Bluetooth, as the tech is advancing quicker than radio waves and there is a certain amount of built-in obsolescence with anything BT) and one of the finest timepieces ever made at any price. Get one while you can!

    How about one of these?

    https://www.seiyajapan.com/collectio...imited-edition

Bright and ticks your functionality wants.

I can't recommend Seiya highly enough as a dealer as well.

Numerous Google holes later, DW6900 is edging forward.

Some heritage and retro looks, a reasonable range of features, and available from a few retailers still.

I hadn't thought to look at Seiya, thanks.

One definite lesson, as with all things watches, the question is not which *one* - it's which *ones*!

P.S. This is hard not to buy at £43 too:

P.P.S. And this (presumably NOS?) Gulfman at £67. Oh dear!

This isn't my first G-Shock, but it's one exactly like it. I sold my first one in 2011, and bought this mint example from eBay to replace it a couple of years ago.

I bought the first one at SOGO at Piccadilly Circus in 1997.

I have seven or eight of them now.

Regarding the Casioak 2100, mines a couple of weeks old and is still correct to the atomic time. I'm not too bothered if it wanders off a second or so per month.
With the adapters, (22mm) it can take a wide range of straps. Very slim to fit under a shirt sleeve too.
My 7900 has taken second place😁

Mine's gained 6 seconds in the last 22 days. Not bad.

I had that gulfman and loved it, but are you sure the answer to this thread isn’t the GLX-5600 (in black, natch)?
