    Query re private reg plate

I’ve applied to the DVLA to xfer the plate from one car (sold) to another.

Still waiting for the paperwork from the DVLA but just done a random “MOT status check” and it’s showing up with the new transferred private reg :)

Can I now out the plate on or do I have to wait for the official paperwork to drop through?

I have a vehicle going back to the lease company so i put the plate on retention via the DVLA website it confirmed the change and i got the retention cert and new V5 in five days however there is a freephone number just give them a call and do not forget to inform your insurance company.

Did you do this online? If so then the transfer happens instantly and it should be confirmed that you now need to put the plate they’ve given on the car.

Recently did a retention online one evening, five days later I had the V5 in my hand. Changed the plates the following day after a check and their system seemed to have updated overnight with the new details.

If you do it online you are supposed to change the plate over as soon as you get confirmation aren’t you?

Ha ha before online was invented I sold my car with plate to a friend. When I was ready with another car we swapped it off. I received my letter at 10am so put the old plate back on and drove to his workplace (a shop he owns). Of course he’d left before the post, so his car still had my plate on too! A situation where two different cars can quite legitimately wear the same plate.

Did it at the specialist when I sold/bought the car.

I’ve swapped it over anyway and advised insurance - which I forgot to do on last car and got pulled for “no insurance”. Luckily it was a Sunday night so plod couldn’t confirm with Admiral directly else the car would’ve been impounded. Lesson learnt.

    Thanks.
