Thread: I know it's a 1 in 30 or so chance...

    I know it's a 1 in 30 or so chance...

but I think this is the first time ever that I've pulled a watch from the box, set the time, wound it up and it's already been on the right date!

When I win the 183M Euro tonight I will pop back and say hello.

Has happened to me a couple of times, last one as recently as this week. I suspect the watch was set upon mailing and it somehow reached me before winding down or May be just a coincidence. Still not hit the jackpot though. Hope you have better luck:-)

Always a good day when it happens

Even had it happen once where I picked it up and yes it had stopped but it was the correct time AND date. Only once though

Gyp, if you win the 183m, have you thought about what you might do in the following week?

    That's always fun.

…but then you have to watch the date change at 12 noon.

I own 19 watches with a date function so I guess my chances of picking one that’s telling the correct date is 19/30.

When I post a watch I always fully wind it and set the date and time, when it reaches the owner it should still be running and telling correct time provided it isn’t delayed in transit. Not sure how much automatic winding occurs during its journey through the postal system!

Only if you select the watch by the date displayed

Even then, I bet some of that 19 will be showing the same date.

I have a couple of watches with no quick date set. I regularly pick those up & then put them straight back if it would mean winding through almost a whole month.

It's for that reason I prefer a watch to show yesterday's date!

I hate picking up a watch on the same date as the day. I have to make sure it's on AM or PM for the date change which means I change the date for an entire month either way.

    One plus to a GMT.

I sometimes leave a post-it note next to a particular watch, with AM or PM indicated. Of course you have to know when it stopped.

In that circumstance personally I'd wear it and if the date changed at midday, I'd just put another one one. Unless I was going to be out all day.

One reason I don't like a date function, except on a digital.

Not watch related but, a few years ago I called at a petrol station with the intention of popping £10 of fuel in the tank, absentmindedly I overshot the total coming to £11.39 when I went to pay I was surprised to find that I had exactly £11.39 in my pocket, - later that day I bought a lottery ticket, and no it didn't win

I'm going straight into my local Rolex dealer to get on the waiting list to buy an everose gold lady-datejust, so that when that arrives I can get on the waiting list to buy a stainless lady-datejust, so that when that arrives I can get on the waiting list to buy yellow gold day date 36, so that when that arrives I can set on the waiting list for a bi-metal datejust so that when that arrives I can finally get on the waiting list for the ND Sub that I wanted in the first place so I never have to worry again about my watch being on the right date!

I wonder if this plays a part in no date subs (and others) being more popular

It certainly plays a part in my fondness for Moonwatches, my Tutima Fliegerchronograph 1941, hand wind Panerai and various 7733 powered chronos.
