Thread: Bought my dream watch today (another Speedmaster thread)

Bought my dream watch today (another Speedmaster thread)

I know it is nothing special compared to some of the watches on here but I have wanted a Speedmaster moonwatch for the last 20 years. Well today was the day.
It started when I was 20 years old and was flying transatlantic by myself to go and work in the Bahamas. I picked up a book called a man on the moon and read it cover to cover on the flight. I was hooked from that day on on all things space related and in particular the space race of the 1960’s.
At the same time I gained an interest in Swiss watches and of course, due to the space connection, the Speedmaster pro became a dream watch of mine.
A year later my parents bought me a Speedmaster date for my 21st. I was of course very happy about owning a Speedmaster but was always slightly disappointed that it wasn’t a moonwatch (my parents didn’t know the difference).
Anyway 20 years have passed and I have bought and sold many watches but it always seemed the the Speedmaster pro was just out of reach for me (it didn’t help that the price kept increasing).
My Speedmaster pro story comes to an end today (or is it just the start?) as my dream was realised. I never thought I would spend this much on a watch but I had the money so thought why not. You only live once. Right?
I held out for the big box version and am glad I did as it made the whole purchase more of an event.
Well that’s enough talk - let’s get on with the photos.

Lovely. That's my dream watch too. Hopefully I'll be in a position to treat myself for my 50th next year, if prices don't go astronomical because of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing...

Congratulations, 20 years is some wait but definitely worth it in the end.
Now, time to play with all the straps you own and see which one you like best! :)

Good stuff, and a wonderful watch. The wait will make you treasure it all the more.

    Cheers,

Congratulations on getting your dream watch! I was lucky in getting the pro for my 21st, a 20 year wait is a very long time.

Now to find somewhere to put that giant box!

Congrats. You've shown patience and passion to hang in for so long. Sounds like you'll have it till you fall off this mortal coil. The massive range of straps that suit this watch means it can be rejuvenated frequently whether it be a leather, a NATO etc. Enjoy.

Congratulations on getting your dream watch, I know the feeling when I purchased my dream one.

Whenever I wear it, reminds me of the time I bought it & always makes me happy.

Hadn’t realised quite how big the boxes were on speedies these days!

Now time to decide on your next dream watch to save for!

Congrats on realising your dream; to go 20 years takes quite some will power, although I bet that makes it all the bit sweeter today!

  16. #16
    I really like it!

I have owned a few over the years, but they ended up leaving my cold. Then the Speedy Tuesday was released and I just loved the look. I paid over the odds to get one at a premium.

I then set out to buy a standard Moonwatch somI could put the bracelet on the Speedy Tuesday. I now have the choice of the Moonwatch on leather and clasp, or the Speedy Tuesday. I’m really enjoying them both, and can’t really say why the same basic watch didn’t gel with me each time Ive tried one over the last 20 years. I guess sometimes it’s all about timing.

    Enjoy
It's just a matter of time...

Congratulations! 20 years is some wait, but you have it now!

    Wear it well.

Thanks for all the kind comments. As you can imagine I am like a kid on Christmas Day today. This watch will be with me till the day I die (then hopefully my daughter will appreciate it).

Congratulations OP, I love a happy ending and I admire your patience.

Congratulations on purchasing one of the great watches - aside from being a stone cold classic, it's more than just a relic, resting on its laurels. Good design remains good design, and the Moonwatch is both practically legible & beautiful.

Pleasingly, it's still common issue in Space even today: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/ac...eva-today-well

    Enjoy.

    Congratulations!

    The watch is amazing!

And the box is beautiful aswel!

Nonsense. It's one you've wanted for 20 years and now it's yours.
    That's very special indeed.
You'll have to rent a garage for the box ;)

stunning watch, I'm really out of touch with these watches. What are the differences between these and a speedy Tuesday then? Love the box and all the details contained. I can see one of these going on the wish list.

Totally different dial, and the ST doesn't come with a bracelet.

    Nothing special, you say !

I think I speak on behalf of the vast majority of the forum, you've acquired one of the few, genuine icons of wristwatch horology, congratulations.

Without wanting to go down the deplorable "mine says Hi" route, er.... 😔

  36. #36
Hope you enjoy it! Got mine 4 years ago now and absolutely love, don't think I'll ever sell it

Nice choice, they always look so special in photos, I did try one once, but it just look meh on my wrist. Shame really as I am a big fan of them

Wonderful! I am waiting for a Speedmaster Moonwatch right now as well, and it's been on my wish list for at least 15 years.

Great seeing yours. I am sure you will enjoy it :-)

  43. #43
One thing on my watch that I had never seen before is on the case back. It says “professional moonwatch”. Does anyone know when omega started putting this on the watch? It seems a strange addition to me.

Really beautiful and I can see how this stands above the speedy Tuesday, so for a novice if I wanted one of these what would I need to pay roughly in today’s market ?
    Thanks

£3520 retail, About £2800-£2900 from a grey dealer or about £2400 for a used example.
