One thing I never learned was the amount of stuff I used to loose, we used to take the top of the doors off and forget that anything and everything on the dash made a quick escape on every corner, wallets fags lighters scattered about everywhere never to be found again.

On a serious note though I found a stash of 70s short wheel base petrol ones in Africa last year but they wouldn’t part with any of them. Was just like an old war film parked up under canopies hardly used about 30 in total all working and maintained well, had a play with one in the hills and it was so refreshing having something that basic again.

Just got to find an extra £100k over the Defender for the privilege.

I was tempted by the new one but on looks alone it wasn’t worth the hype for me.

I’ll stick to my old one

I quite like it in the darker colour too. But a closer inspection would be required.

That is very nice. G Wagen wise, I was thinking 2 or 3 years old, £65k or so. My 2019 Wrangler serves as my back to basics truck.

Every Defender I see these days is continuously kicking out a huge plume of smoke whilst making a horrendous racket. Every single one of them - young(ish) or old.
Enter the Spanish Santana with its Defender-ish model with the Iveco engine.

I really like the look of the Defender, especially the 110. About 10 yrs ago I wanted to purchase one but was veto'ed by my wife: "... no car with LandRover on our driveway. I've worked long enough in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan to know that the only proper car is a LandCruiser."

That was the end of my Landy adventure.

I've been privileged to have seen the new Defender un-camouflaged and it's gorgeous. I'll be after one when released.

''Privileged'', methinks you're taking this just a might bit too seriously.

Quite possibly - but I’m just suggesting those who’ve taken against it without seeing it are bring unwise.

Remember that LR were selling hardly any Defenders when it was withdrawn suggesting it was not what people wanted to buy.

The defender was outdated and over priced, these days a Japanese pick-up at around £20k is a better proposition, I guess the new model is just a way of cashing in on past glories.

The demand for the Defender was massive especially over the last few months of production but then again we were very rural based so a bulk of our customers were farmers.

Out dated maybe but stick a set of mud pluggers on it and it'll go anywhere a Japanese car will go with ease.

Yes indeed. The new one is not aimed at that market although its aims are durability and unbeaten off-road capability.

Time will tell us if they’ve achieved that but I suspect most buyers won’t get it muddy despite its abilities.

I suspect that was people wanting the last few. Sales figures overall latterly were shockingly low.

Yes I’ve heard of farmers preferring the Defender to Japanese etc pickups.

Thanks, yes it’s had the JE Engineering remap with larger intercooler so circa 180+bhp - it’s still very slow

Nice! I had the BAS150 kit in my 2016 Landmark, never got around to fitting the cooler and going to 170.

Ok not fast but pokey enough to surprise those who assumed it was Farmer Joe at the wheel

A utility vehicle. Something the army could and would buy for field use.

What we have is just another shiny SUV. LR already make a load of those.

Spot on. The G-Wagen looks more Land Rover-like than this new Defender. If Mercedes were able to update the G-Wagen without losing its iconic looks then one would have hoped and expected that LR could have done the same for the Defender.

But no, we get another not-really-utility-at-all-SUV.

They do mate, it’s called JLTV (army learnt its lesson with soft skinned Snatch LRs in Iraq and Afghanistan)

Depends on the use, doesn't it. Only a minority of vehicles need to be armoured for patrol purposes. A general purpose, cross-country utility vehicle doesn't generally need armour and that's the kind of role where Land Rovers used to be ideal -- the Army had tens of thousands of Defender variants in that sort of role. But it doesn't seem likely that the Army is going to have tens of thousands of these new Defenders in any role.

Giving Defenders and variants light armour made sense for certain scenarios but (in retrospect) never made sense for Iraq where IEDs could be enormous.

Well that didn’t go quite to plan. Was going to wait until the Defender reveal in a few days, but today saw me order a new, spec-amendable Merc G 350d (aka “Panzer”) for delivery in three months. Should be epic and somewhat more reliable than the JLR product - which I do not doubt will have a certain appeal, but not for me.

    Nailed it.

    I had a 90CSW for 5 years.
Bought it new, lost £1100 in depreciation.
Rear heated window went tits up a few times, other than that, it was 100% reliable.

That new thing though, is a bag of arse.

Doubt there’s a better built car on the road tbh -made in the Steyer plant in Austria, I think.

This is where defenders should have kept their boxey, utilitarian look. Not this round crap that they've done. Which is a shame as the other cars in the range that they have all look great. Just think they've missed the mark on this one.

The v8 Anniversary models are avail to order of the old defender.... £150k - a snip.

Well, it started life as a cross between a tractor and a car but mainly tractor. One vehicle for everything, sort of thing. Not sure there's too much call for that sort of vehicle today. This is just a marketing/branding exercise leveraging the "Defender" name. I'm not sure I expected anything different to what's arrived.

I think you have to put it in the SUV/Chelsea tractor box and judge it like that.

Look at what farmers are driving these days. Even pickup trucks are bulbous, air-conditioned palaces.

I was a huge fan of the Discovery 4 (hate the 5) and I see the new Defender in this light. The D4 is still quite popular with farmers and others who work on the land so the Defender should work out well, if not quite in the same way.

I would buy one if the price was right.

I'd probably opt for Rubellite Red Metallic, reminds me a of one a girlfriends dad had in almondine red some years ago.

Surely vehicles in that category (albeit in modern terms) sell very well: Hi-Lux, other pickups of all sorts, Patrols, Landcruisers, Shogun/Pajero. I recognise that these vehicles cross categories somewhat but they all go where Defenders once went and do what Defenders do/did.

It does seem odd that they didn't do this, when clearly Mercedes were able to do so with a very similar vehicle.

But Land Rover does seem to have a strategy of making all their models look at similar as possible! I'm all for a family style but my impression is that they have taken it way too far.

I can tell the FF RR apart from the others and I think I'll be able to tell the new Defender apart (although its front end says Disco to me), but all the others are good-looking but so similar as, for me, to be indistinguishable: It is a Range Rover Discovery Sport Velomobile or a Evocative Not-Freelander, or what? ;-)

I don’t like it. However it is more environmentally friendly and if you were to run someone over the damage would be less

A bit like triggers broom though ;-) Saying that the option to easily (home enthusiast) replace every part is one of the attractions and one of the reasons I had for series/defender landrovers over a 15 year period. I think the days of the home mechanic being able to sort his defender are gone with the new model.

On the good side I hope the new model will make a lot of the current yuppy 'old style' defender owners sell up and move to the new model, lured by the fancy connectivity/multi-media/luxury and driver aids the youngsters seem to like.

Apologies, I was talking Merc Gs. I would imagine the ratio for Defenders, rebuilt or otherwise, would be much less.
