My Motone rails turned up today so straight to it...
You can see how close they are to the Thruxton rails..

I fitted the RH one to the bike

As I’m still waiting for my Stainless Steel to turn up, I then set about making aluminium templates

All my Stainless steel parts arrived, so I spent this evening setting up the brackets ready for welding

I could MIG them myself, but I think TIG does a better job and I haven’t got a TIG welder, so I’ll drop em off tomorrow with a local Fabricator chap and he can get the welding done for me.

Great work. There is something far more satisfying about making and adapting things rather than have them simply fit (unless of course they are meant to simply fit...)

I must admit, my main motivation was the saving of over £220 quid🤪...

In saying that, I do believe this will be a significant improvement in the way the panniers fit, as it will avoid them flopping around when empty (a bit of an issue on the Bobber panniers due to the way they fit the rails)

And the other issue of them being easy to nick, by just undoing the strap and walking off, is also eliminated, as these will be bolted to the rails..🏍🏍🏍

    It’s looking good Enoch.

Are you going to remove the paintwork before welding then powder coat or paint it all the one colour?

I’ve actually removed the paint where the welds are needed.... I tried to remove just enough to get the job done...

Then I’m going to use a brush to etch prime, and paint satin black just where needed...

This will have to do for now, and then come winter I’ll get them, and a few other bits powder coated.👍👍

Nice job Enoch, it looks like a factory fit.

Given that it’s actually better than the factory option, perhaps they’d be interested in using your design!

What are you going to put in your panniers?

    In mine i usually have;

    a few tools
    a puncture repair kit
    some string
a ferry ticket from 11 years ago
    cable ties
    a falafel
spare Rizlas (silver, all stuck together)
    a road map of Croydon
a mucky DVD found at the roadside in Holland
    an `Acme thunderer` whistle
    one spare glove
....and a heavy stone i found in a field which i thought was a meteorite but turned out to be a lump of slag.

    That's an awesome job.

The Street Scrambler is going in for Givi brackets at my local fabricators, but that's more function than form (and I already have the Givi boxes).

I'll only put them on for touring and stick to the Triumph rugged pannier for day to day.

Well today I took a load of full sharps boxes back to the hospital for disposal, and picked up fresh medical supplies in them....

It was great not having to try and find somewhere to park the car👍

I'm going to stick with lovely, but only because whilst it's wonderfully done, and the brakes and Allspeeds are perfect, there are a couple of bits that don't work for me.

But they don't have to work for me so it doesn't matter :-)

I don’t like indicators, especially the giant chrome plated plastic eyesores that were originally on the bike so replaced with these nearly invisible ( when off ) LED motogadget items.

Nice one goat, the looks of the original R80Gs with all the modern day bells whistles AND performance. They are a bit tall for me , thats why I stick with a low chassis F700gs. Enjoy

Lee, Is the yellow coating on the headlamp lens a yellow film or painted? How does it effect the light output. Im thinking of modifying my yellow monkey bike like that as it looks really smart and I rarely ride at night.

    Hello Steve

It’s a film I put on, doesn’t seem to lessen the brightness and during the day it seems to catch the attention of motorists a lot more

Not yet, but the rear section is 49mm ID so they will fit standard baffles. I bought a "stainless" pair off Ebay, they were rubbish and not worthy of residing in Roy's work. I guess they would only stay there for 10 miunutes anyhow, before getting fired out.
So I think I will get a pair from TEC bike parts, and may even weld those in, rather than attempting to locate them with a bolt that will just drop out for fun.
The whole exhaust will eventually be blasted, so any weld bluing will be taken off.

Cheers, been mulling it over for a while and it only took a test ride to convince....may change handlebars and fiddle with some suspension tuning but pretty spot on as is!

Not really, I am undecided whether to wrap the mid section to avoid leg burn (on pegs and floor), or whether to use a shield. There is plenty of both tube sizes to make a shield up from, and I am sure I can find some sheet somewhere to make a foot for a shield.

The lines are more clearly seen here

So you can see the pipe is fully inside the line of the pegs

Sweets I would initially use a guard and work out where the heat is highest. Wrapping loses the purity of the line , think Rickman Metisse. You dont need too much of an air gap between a zorst at full heat and a warm leg. Airflow whilst riding is your friend

Please, please, please use heat shields.
The quality of your build deserves them.
Exhaust wrap nearly always hides crap workmanship.
Wrap on new bikes.....reminds me much of the same.
Wrap can be useful for insulation or accelerating gas flow, but other than that, its nearly always a bodge.

    More mods

    Been spending money this week.

I’ve ordered triumph scrambler multi function lights, British legends tail tidy (which will be modified) a small tail light/numberplate light..

My plan is to fit the multi function lights to the tail tidy, and mount the rear light above, then I’m gonna wire them so that the multifunctions provide stop lamps and indicators, and the small tail lamp is just a tail lamp and number plate illumination, although there is the option to make this a brake light as well, I’ll see if it detracts from the other brake lights before I do this...

Then best of all, I’ve just got off the phone with Adrian from Canyon motorcycles, and have ordered a set of lightweight 40 spoke alloy wheels in denim black with bronze spokes.... 3.5”x16 front, and 4.25x16 rear, complete with new Avon Cobra tyres

    I’m gonna be busy

    In simple terms yes.

However no-one makes the requisite bits to attach a set of Givi monokey luggage for the bike, so I commissioned a bespoke set of brackets from a local specialist fabrication firm. All at a price that made my Grand Seiko deployant seem like a compete bargain.

The exhaust parts came from Lithuania, then were shipped to access exhaust specialist in Australia for modification. That wasn't quite so spendy.

Blimey, haven't seen white letter tyres since I had BF Goodrich Radial T/A's on my Trans AM.

    Nice looking bike though.

I think my previous was a Yamaha XS400SE US Custom back in the mid-80's.

Hot motorcycle modding tip: if you're going to white letter your tyres, take the wheels from the bike, position them on a flat surface at a convenient height and work with good light.

Don't do them late at night, lying on the floor of a poorly lit garage with the bike on it's side stand, after several beers, without your glasses.

Whatever, I'm sure my Metzleer Tournonces look fine. From a distance.

I remember white lettering my tyres back in the day, and searching for the best stuff to do it with, which invariably came from the USA, via John Woolfe Racing or similar for an extortionate price. It was only when I had American cars I started to have the tyres that had the white letters from new. Still secretly quite like them although they probably wouldn't suit my current cars!
