    Steve Wright hoofed out

Depending on what you read it would seem Steve is being replaced by choice or otherwise by the ever so boring Scott Mills. The truth will be out there somewhere but the outcome is that the afternoon show on radio 2 will be hosted by the ever so bland Mills. He was bad enough filling in for Ken Bruce. For me and probably many more it will be the search button once the afternoon slot arrives.

  2. #2
I am no fan of Scott Mills like you say bland. However I also think Steve has run his course. 24 years the program and format is tired and it’s time for a change. It would be nice if the bbc could expand its search for talent but that’s not happening in this case.

Yeah, a bit of freshening-up will do no harm.

I've enjoyed SW over the years - remember Fake Arnie?- but in the immortal words of Peter Paul & Mary - "nothing lasts forever, not even little DJs".

Mills is truly awful. Bland, boring and repetitive. Whether he’s on radio or TV, I change the channel.

Steve Wright was horrific but better the devil you know.
Scott Mills was a nightmare filling in for Ken.
Only bonus is it's only 2 hours but that means an extra hour with Sarah Cox who is shit.
I'd love Joe Whiley to get the afternoon slot.

Once Ken Bruce is finished, I'll be done with Radio 2.
I enjoy Steve Wright, Mills was murder filling in for Ken Bruce earlier in the year.

Never listen to radio now but when at work used to listen to him. His takeaway prank calls were hilarious.

Even my father won't listen to Radio2.

At least we won't have to hear Steve Wright say "serious jockin" every five seconds.

Thank god Steve Wright has gone - the same old show day in day out for decades..
    It was long overdue..

Only listen to Virgin and Talksport nowadays. I used to love SW in the original Radio 1 afternoon slot in the 80s

Radio 2 is a staple in most work places with people even stopping to listen to Ken Bruce's Pop Master every morning, I used to like SW and even remember listening to his show when 9/11 broke but as good as he is/was times have changed.

I listen to Planet Rock whenever I have the radio on or flip between their alternate stations, much more to my taste..

I may have read the article wrong but I believe SW’s partner is his producer and advised him 6 months ago about lopping 60 mins of the show. Must have been an interesting chat over dinner…..

I first remember him on Radio 210 (Reading's local station back then), he had a slot with Mike Read called the Read and Wright show. He was a breath of fresh air in the 80's when he joined Radio 1, he pioneered the "zoo" format of broadcasting the like of which nobody had heard before. However that was 40 years ago and his format hasn't changed much since! Well played Steve you've had a great run.

Hardly hoofed out, after 24 years and he's still staying with the Beeb.

I'll miss his distraction at the dentist.

I didn't realise he was still around, haven't listened to afternoon R2 for donkey's years.

I'm not interested in personality DJ's, I just want a station with a good playlist and DJ's who keep shtum whilst they play records which is Planet rock for me.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

    Steve Wright hoofed out

Do we still have Steve Wright's Sunday Love Songs? Always so moving.

OT, but a recommended internet station that is the antithesis, Beyond the Beat Generation. Sixties underground and psychedelia.

Well I for one am going to miss Steve, and although the show is much the same as it was in the 80's that's not a bad thing for some of us!
I'm actually liking Vernon when he's on and even Gary Davies is a pleasant change from Scott Mills sitting in.

Sara Cox is actually very funny (in a mad sort of way) and her show is a nice end to the day in work.

Exactly, I haven't listened to Radio 2 in decades. In my view the wireless is for hearing stuff you haven't heard before and with the exception of 6Music I really only get music from internet radio shows.

I haven't listened to any BBC radio stations for years.

Recently discovered Greatest Hits Radio, https://planetradio.co.uk/greatest-hits/presenters/
It's like listening to the radio from years ago.

I have gone away from BBC R2 of late, only Ken Bruce holds any gravitas and appeal for me. Back in the late 80’s, early 90’s Steve Right was superb, but he is now old and stagnant. However his replacement is about as entertaining as paint drying and as funny as a fire in an orphanage. Yet another terrible move by the BBC. The license fee really is something one should be able to easily opt out of.

Steve was ok but that serious joking was annoying as ****. I don't know how Scott mills has lasted this long. Sarah Cox is too annoying with her stupid voice changes.

    Oh and that Jeremy vine....

Let's say Radio 2 doesn't last long after ken Bruce.

He did well to last 24 years. I know Radio 2 is supposed to have a broad appeal, but he was many years past his best

I used like Terry Wogan (Janet and John was so funny!), and Ken Bruce is ok for popmaster, but nothing else on R2 works for me (oh, except Jo Whiley). Prevalence of personality DJs now, and some of them have enormously annoying personalities!

6 Music and planet Rock are my biggest listens, as well as some oldskool, jungle & hardcore dance stations.

Wife likes R2, and if 6 is playing something weird, we default to Abs 80s.

Steve Wright was brilliant back in the 80s with the afternoon boys. Mr Angry, Sid the Manager, the 'who shot Mr Angry' spoof was hilarious. Like anyone in entertainment I guess he's reached his sell-by date.

Whilst there are many here who are not bothered, the listening figures are the important thing. Steve was at his defenestration one of the UK's most listened to DJs. Personally I never went out of my way to listen, but when I did, I thought he was excellent.

The reminds me of Simon Bannister fixing Radio 1 so successfully that it lost it's audience.

I hate Scott Mills, but it could be worse, they could have shifted Vanessa Feltz into SW's slot. (Fnar fnar).
She has the most irritating voice and mannerisms I have ever come across!

Clearly they want to change their audience. They certainly won't be retaining anyone who currently listens to Steve.
Mills, Phelps, Ball (both of 'em) & Vine are all bloody awful. Perhaps as a middle aged, middle incomed white bloke I am not in Radio 2's target demographic.

Great fun back in the day but boy haven’t times changed..? Why would anyone listen to modern/contemporary music radio anymore with its asinine DJs and constant commercial interruptions (and yes that goes for the BBC too.
