18 inch but only because I went for the white colour scheme and the 18 inch black aeros look IMHO best in contrast with the white

One thing about owning a Tesla that I'm trying to avoid is becoming an irrational fanboi/Elon groupie. A few days ago I came out of Fleet services and was behind a brand new Aston, a car probably 2x or more the value of the Tesla. All I could think of was the 2 horrible looking holes in the rear of the Aston (exhaust pipe) and how noisy it was and thinking how crude it looked and sounded. At moments like that you need to slap yourself in the face and say 'sort yourself out'. Elon is a tosser and I'm sure the Aston is amazing to drive.

Another observation is how other drivers treat you when you drive a Tesla. I can say this as I drove a Velar before and how drivers treated me when I drove that vs the Telsa is night and day. There seems to be some people who somehow get antagonised by EVs and I guess Tesla represents Satan in this regard. Apart from the boy racers wanting a sprint off, far fewer people let you into traffic lanes vs the Velar and I've had a couple of occasions where I've overtaken someone at only 70 or so, that seems to have annoyed then so they've undertaken me at 80, then moved directly into my lane and slowed to 65 or whatever so I've overtaken again, rinse and repeat.

Dangerously yesterday on the M3 I was trying to move into the inside lane to exit down towards Sunbury when a BMW would absolutely refuse to let me into that lane despite the fact the lane was empty apart from me. So I slowed to go behind him, he slowed to prevent me, I sped up, he sped up etc. I was fuming and eventually got behind him, overtook him going around the roundabout towards Kempton Park and we lost him going into Kingston.

Other Tesla owners have reported similar. Maybe ICE owners view Tesla owners as Leftie Liberal, Oat Latte-swilling Eco warriors- I'll be honest and say in my case the environmental impact wasn't the primary motivator- it's a nice byproduct but first and foremost it was the tech that made me buy an EV. And I'm definitely not a Leftie.

The cult that many people join when they buy a Tesla is the worst bit about the car to be honest.

I haven’t noticed the ‘Tesla rage’ thing as much, but I don’t frequent the South East, and there are just so many M3s up here in the midlands that I’m not sure they provoke much of a reaction now as they’re very familiar to most people.

Since ‘going electric’ my driving style has changed for the better as well, I keep myself to myself and although the M3 LR is probably the fastest car I’ve ever owned, it’s also one I drive the slowest!

I do get people who seem to cut across my nose without indicating on motorways possibly to make a point (coal rolling?!), that’s in the ID.3 or M3, but then again maybe it’s just the generally poor standard of driving.

Disempower other drivers is the best driving advice I ever got. Don’t engage with people or their silly games, don’t let them be the ones who have you sitting at home of an evening asking yourself what you did wrong whilst they don’t even remember what it was that made them do what they did.

Yep, that and giving Elon money are the two worst bits.

So, I figured it was time to post as we collected our Model 3 Performance last week.

It was scheduled for March, but they got in touch and said it was ready early. It's my wife's car, not mine. So she watched the videos etc they ask you to view prior to collection.
We picked the car up from Bluewater, which was the closest. It's a very strange experience. All done in a car park, you show your documents, then they tell you to go find your car. It will be one of the Teslas with the side lights on.
There were loads of them all ready for collection.

Car came with about 30-40% charge. My wife wanted to charge it, but there were no chargers available and it was just over the amount of miles home. So we just left.
If you have experienced a dealer hand over in a regular showroom, this is so far from that. It's literally, the card (key) is in the car, off you go. My missus was stressing about driving it home, but we took our time in the carpark figuring everything out before leaving.

We had a Tesla charger installed by a company called Mr Charger. Turns out our house has a 63amp fuse and the Tesla draws 32 amps by default. Ours kept stopping the charge. So on advice from Mr Charger, the Tesla was reduced to 25 amps draw, which seems to be fine. We are getting our main fuse upgraded by the electricity board in the new year to 100 amps.

So, my wife loves it, she has made a few trips out prior to Christmas. Ours got the update through on Christmas day, which she loved showing everyone the fancy Tesla light show :) (Not quite as good as the Model X party piece, but still cool). The Tesla logo projection on the wall was a nice touch.

I got to Drive it on Christmas eve myself for the first time. I took my two teenage sons Christmas shopping in it. Of course, the first thing we tried was self driving and the 0-60. Had to have my son looking up stuff on YT, to switch certain things on. Self driving was remarkable. Obviously you have to be ready to jump in, but I was amazed at how well it did. The 0-60 is something else. I have an Audi S3, which has a pretty fast 0-60, but the Tesla does it in 3 odd seconds, which is proper pin you to the seat acceleration.
Overall, I like it. As I said, it's not really for me, it's for school runs, trips to Tesco etc for my wife and getting the one with more range will help with the shorter journeys and gaps between charging.

It is really interesting reading all the thoughts of the new owners and takes me back. I was uber sensitive when I first had mine to thoughts of other road users but nearly a year and a half down the line I don't really notice any bad.

Christmas Eve I sat outside the Chinese awaiting the traditional takeaway with the frunk open and all I got was funny banter by the lads having a drink out. Thats another big bonus not stinking the car out when collecting takeaway or collecting from the fishmonger.

I am totally with you Ryan on the fan boy scenario. I try so hard not to go on about the car and how the brand works, I have mentioned several times on the other thread that after nearly 20 years of swanky b***site BMW and Audi sales and service I find the whole Tesla thing so refreshing. The sales we have experienced with home delivery and picking up at Bluewater was so refreshing.....here's ya car now clear off.... I don't need some silly socked Boss wearing 20 something sucking up to me. I think as try as you can, the majority cannot help but be impressed and joy in telling how way-out these motors are, fun even when you consider the last roll out. Sorry, but try as I have I am a fan boy.....

Having experienced a number of UI updates @guinea you do find them easier to navigate and the UK FB page is a real good source of info. I find it all part of the ownership fun finding the new stuff.

I am also finding the petrolhead noise thing becoming very tirersome and I have had some decent motors in the past, I built a 200bhp Westfield some years back with twin 45's on trumpets, the induction noise was addictive........ The last two Golf R's wifey had were fun but in comparison to my Performance they now seem sluggish and nowhere near the grin factor.
I know the top end is not there in an EV but I have no intention of doing 90+mph, I proved the pull of the M3P last week beside a 911 CS at 50mph on a DC, I had put a good distance between us at legal speeds before he came past at what had to be 100+mph.....just crazy...

    Continue with the fun chaps....

Model 3 is a great car. Mat Watson from Carwow even bought it for his mother. That is very indicative, my opinion.

Wife drove it up to York and back over the past 2 days to see friends and even with the sat nav routing her via the dreadful A1 route due to traffic congestion on the M1 she said she was super refreshed when she arrived on either leg whereas in our previous Velar it would have been more tiring. Autopilot engaged most of the way, 1 stop for a 25 minute charge each way, and even with what she said was a noticeably lower standard of driving up North the car handled it all with aplomb. She absolutely loves the Tesla.

It’s some car and the 3 hour drive home let me get used to it.
Has anyone else had their car slam the brakes on while in CC when it thought there may be a collision with a stationary vehicle?
Coming off the dual carriageway at 70ish…. on the brow of a hill with a transit parked in the lay-by, the car didn’t like it!
Thankfully I was given the heads up half an hour before from another Tesla driver that this has happened to them so at least I was slightly prepared.

Yes, so called Phantom Braking is a thing with Tesla’s. Those who say it’s not a thing in their car just haven’t had it happen to them yet.

A lot of cars with Collision Avoidance Systems or Automatic Emergency Braking sometimes do it too.

Whether it just gets talked about more ‘because Tesla’ or the Tesla system is particularly sensitive (or stupid!), I’m not sure.

You just override it by pressing the accelerator briefly though, one of the reasons you still need to be concentrating fully in any car, whether it has such ‘driver aids’ or not.

Working in aviation, I really dislike the Autopilot name, as it’s anything but and gives a false sense of security for some folks I think.

If your cars ‘Autopilot’ kills you, it’s because you will have let it. That’s my mantra with all such systems.

Fortunately I was aware of it and as you say, just touch the accelerator to correct.
Really only a heads up for others as I’d imagine it would have given me a real fright if I’d been unaware.
Yes, my Audi has done it twice through town when heading towards pedestrians just before a bend in the road, almost headbutt the steering wheel.

Phantom braking is well reported and I have experienced it a few times. After nearly 19,000 miles I know when the car will default ‘safe’ and brake and I just knock it off, a parked vehicle in funny places is a classic.

I drive from Suffolk to York a lot Ryan as big son went to Uni (14 years ago) and settled down there. I could not agree more about how noticeably less fatigued the Tesla drive is compared to all the other cars that did the trip, the last two being the newest and latest version Q7 and XC90.

Lots of groans on V11 but I really really like it and find it a nice improvement. With all previous updates there has been bugs and bits that get picked up later. I really like the thought of losing icons you don’t really use and the quick menus are excellent and far better being close to the driver. The biggy is the sound system though, it is almost like I have dropped the car into an audio specialist and spent a grand.

Have a great New Year all.

One thing I thought v11 might bring was the ability to see the front facing camera from the car. Strange to omit that, I can see it on the all of using the new Sentry mode, just not in the car.

Had some phantom breaking the other day, quite annoying, but just assumed the basic autopilot (which I think is just lane keep assist anyway) is probably only to be used on dual carriageways or motorways.

I am still working my way around the level of autopilot. Mine must be basic as I did not pay to upgrade anything...but if I double click the D stalk on a dual carriageway, it just drives. Increase speed, decreases speed, if cars come to a stop then the car stops and then starts again...it teers around the bends. Feels pretty comprehensive to me, definitely more than lane keeping.

I guess the fully paid version adds the benefit of lane changes and literally following the sat nav from your home to work or wherever you tell it to go?

On another note, left my son in the car for 2-3 mins yesterday...kept watching the car the whole time and suddenly all sorts of loud music started playing and everyone was staring at the car!!!
I guess this is the Tesla version of 'alarm'...he didn't like it very much !

It autlocked when I left as I guess it didn't detect my phone in the car. Ideal scenario would be allowing me to lock it but not sounding the alarm. I have read up and possibly should have activated 'dog mode' if he was staying in the car?

I drive in single stalk down auto pilot quite a lot, especially in traffic. Seems like radar cruise control (ACC in VW) but you can set it from any speed. I think in VW you can’t set this in 1st gear or below 20mph whereas in Tesla you can set it whenever you like, even from stationary, which is great when you’re stuck in traffic.

It’s the double stalk down/auto pilot inc steering which can flip out, especially on regular roads with a car parked on the pavement. Certainly wakes you up.

Autopilot should only be used on Motorways TBH

So this thread has helped me today with something really stupid I've been trying to figure out! How to engage 'full' base autopilot (autosteer + TACC). I keep just engaging TACC, which is really good, but although autosteer us toggled on, never seems to work. Now I know why! I need to double tap the stalk down. Thanks all!

The ACC on the ID.3 can initially be set at speeds above 15mph, but once set will brake and stop and remain engaged if you’re in traffic, then will resume either automatically or by pressing the OK button if you’ve been stopped a while.

However, I tend to hit the Park button in both the ID and the Tesla when I’m in shuffling traffic like on the A1 last night, as the brake lights remain on whilst you’re stopped waiting to move off again, which isn’t great for the people behind you.

I know that basic courtesy when driving is slim nowadays, but it’s almost like since autohold became a feature in many cars nobody bothers with the hand or electronic parking brake any more. It makes night time congestion more of a pain than it should be.

    Evening ‘Teslites’

Did my range check finally. Note this is now around a month in so the driving like I stole it is not really happening anymore.

Went from 100% to 12% and did 142 miles.

Extrapolating that equates to 161 miles for a full 100% battery.

This is the Long Range model. We didn’t worry about using maximum heating when needed and didn’t think at all about range maximisation. Just drove as we wished.

So less range than I thought. I was thinking would get 200 in these conditions given quoted is 360. But it is fine. I suppose in the Summer it will be better.

At the moment I think it costs around £14 for full charge so that means 8.6p per mile for ‘fuel’. Definitely cheaper than our other car which is more like 40p per mile!!

Even if the electricity tariff doubles which it may do when our renewal arrives in a few months we are still fine!

Anyway apologies for the slightly nerdy post.

On another note the car has just given itself another software update after the big one a week ago. Not sure what it is this time I assume minor bug fixes.

    Happy motoring all.

Hmm. I got 206 miles today in a SR+. Started at 96% and ended on 7%. Kingston to Poole and back. Mostly motorway driving at speed limit 'ish' . So (206/89) * 100 implies full range of 231 miles. Weather was raining, heating was on, as was music. Was also charging 2 phones.

Used autopilot for most of the motorway stuff- maybe thats more efficient and you have a bit of a heavy right foot?. You are using 1 pedal driving correctly to get regen?

At the moment driving with no thought of economy but will try again on next cycle. Also a lot of short journeys with car heating up before being put back to sleep!

Using the regen but I am sure my wife is driving it like a normal car!

I think you also have the newer battery so perhaps there isn’t going to be much difference in range between our two cars.

Using the regen but I am sure my wife is driving it like a normal car!

I think you also have the newer battery so perhaps there isn’t going to be much difference in range between our two cars.
I have a LR which doesn’t have the LFP chemistry, and your range sounds terrible!

161 miles is around 2.3 miles per kWh, I think your driving style needs to be refined a little!

I’m averaging around 3.4 miles per kWh, which is still worse than Ryan’s claimed 4.2 from his SR RWD, but hey we all drive differently!

Used autopilot for most of the motorway stuff- maybe thats more efficient and you have a bit of a heavy right foot?. You are using 1 pedal driving correctly to get regen?
Ryan, it’s quite sweet that you think charging 2 phones would make any noticeable difference at all to your cars range! :-) The power consumption for that is nothing compared to powering the motor and heating the car.

To give you an idea, charging an iPhone from flat to full each day takes about 2kWh a year. Your car has a 55kWh approx battery, so it could charge your phone everyday for 25 years.

Your car at full chat pulls 211kW, so your battery would be gone in roughly 15 mins under that theoretical scenario.

You do need to watch the LFP batteries, voltage goes off a cliff towards the end of the pack, so I wouldn’t run it too low.

I took my M3P to London and back, 209 miles each way, all motorway. On the way down with auto steer on a lot, I used 99% of my battery, although I did Supercharge at Oxford. On the way back it was 89% usage, which equates to about 240 miles.

Oh, and watch ground clearance. Parking up at my parents in law, and driving over something that was once a walI I heard an awful grinding sound from underneath. Mercifully it was just the bottom of the front mud flap scraping, but it scared the crap out of me at the time. Was under there with a torch! All ok, but it’s clearance isn’t great, and the front mud flaps, fitted as standard this quarter, reduce that clearance even more.

A “lower standard of driving up North” - care to explain this statement?

She noticed what she felt was a clear deterioration in driving standards the further North she got - both on the M1 and A1. Specifically speeding, undertaking and aggressive driving. This was of course only her observation on the 2 days she was driving and doesn't mean northerners are universally worse drivers than southerners - it was just something she observed on her particular trip.

When travelling from East Sussex to Yorkshire, I always use the A1 these days (via the M11/A14 so miss the southern section). Having regularly done this journey since 2008, I find the A1 far better than either the M1 or M40/42/6.

I don’t know why you think it’s dreadful.

WRT driving standards, I think it’s more of a case of differences in conventions rather than standards. It’s a little like different dialects, we all speak the same language but slightly differently; similarly, we all drive to slightly different interpretations of the Highway Code. I know from experience that most northerners, when driving in the south, feel the same about the standards of driving down here.

Agreed, we live with easy access to both the A1 and M1 and our trips to London are invariably by the A1, as for driving standards they are at best universally nothing to celebrate.

I think the A1 she felt was very narrow and poorly lit.

Re driving standards yes this was one trip only and it was just on this trip. We don't mean Northerners are worse drivers than southerners it was just that on this trip once she got past Grantham there were a load more nutters on the road.

I'm well aware of how obnoxious some of the drivers down South are also (had ample experience of this yesterday on the M3). Bad driving is universal regardless of geographical region - we all pass the same tests after all to get our licences.

The thing about undertaking though: that only happens if she’s hugging the middle lane.

I don’t think driving standards are any better or worse anywhere in the UK, my point was that, like dialects, drivers in different parts of the country drive slightly differently. If you’re used to it, it feels normal and safe but if you’re not, it feels dangerous. It’s only slight differences because we all drive to the same rules but it can feel massive.

I undertook almost 10 cars in a row last night on the motorway while going 65 in the slow lane. None of them realised and got behind me after I’d gone by them.

Absolutely hate undertaking but it was either that or get right up their arse with the high beams on which is my usual favourite.

Makes me chuckle to myself reading about car software updates and autonomous driving etc. I got into my old vw golf yesterday and found the old fashioned handbrake, actual needles on actual dials etc a real breath of fresh air. Been driving our Tiguan R line with all its bells and whistles and I really do find the vast majority of the gadgetry pointless and distracting. Apart from the ‘stop me having an accident’ stuff I’ve hardly ever used any of it, the thing that detects white lines, keeps me a set distance from the car in front - those are the things that I have to concentrate on to have control of the car!
I’m sure I’m an old git and I’m happy to accept that things evolve - but I already find my phone, various work computers, my home internet and various tv’s etc take up an inordinate amount of time keeping refreshed and updated etc. I just got in the golf and drove!

I know what you mean, I’m a grumpy old man at times as well!

If it’s any consolation, the VW ID.3 is a bit like that, software updates are very few and far between compared to the Tesla, you just get in and drive it, which is as it should be.

That glorious 7kW cold weather public charging.

Good job BP don’t charge for overstaying at 7kW chargers.

There is a 50kW charger an extra hundred metres away (this is 7kW) but it’s in a pay and display car park and I’m cheap. I’m also fearful of overstay charges in the app.

Should have a drive by Easter which will make things easier than petrol. So far we’ve done 570 miles and we haven’t noticed any inconvenience at all and that includes a 230 mile round trip to Suffolk for New Years and a couple of 100 mile round trips to Cambridge.

There is a 50kW charger right next to the place I store my watches and it’s free parking so long as you’re charging. I’m usually there once or twice per month so always a chance to top up somewhere.

The new batteries and being able to charge to 100% make a huge difference.

Ah that sounds a lot more like it.

My 981 GTS suggests 380miles from a full tank, but never get there unless I am on motorways / being sensible.

I'd like to try an EV, but not at the expense of our current 981 family. If Tesla made a Smart sized car, I would be all over it instantly; the current range is just laughable for my wife to use going to work without permanent anxiety range. Not sure we really need the 3rd 'station / park anywhere' vehicle anymore, as I work from home 80% of the time & 100% presently.

Equally if it was a Tesla, I'd lose the 'park anywhere' feel of the plastic panelled Smart!

Has anyone here ordered a Model Y?

Does it come with the newer battery pack that can be charged to 100%?

On next full charge...100% to 6%...126 miles...= 134 miles per 100% so worse than last time !

Will try this one more time, this time turning sentry off when 'Home' (thanks Wileeeeeey for the tip)...we cannot change much more. Perhaps our use of the car dictates a lower range.

No long journeys so far. School runs mainly with some shopping trips, etc. Therefore car using energy to warm up in this colder weather and then being switched off again soon after.

Car always pre-conditions and heats up before use and so I know this wastes energy for a short journey but wouldn't be without this feature now especially on a cold frosty morning.

I feel if we took it for longer trips or used for commuting it may be much better on range. I will try that one day to expirment but for those trips I usually take a different car !

126 miles on a long range. I’d be fuming.

Are you going to request a service through the app or give them a call? Still can’t believe Sentry mode takes 12-14 miles per night for me.

Yes, the Model Y SR will have the LFP battery pack.

The 100% thing, it doesn’t mean you can’t charge any non LFP Tesla to 100%, it’s just a recommendation to only charge to 80% if you won’t be needing all of the range. It’s fine to charge any EV to 100% if your going to be using it in the next day or so, otherwise holding the charge at 80% is kinder to the battery.

Tesla encourage owners to charge the LFP packs to 100% at least once a week to help to balance the voltage between the battery modules, and over time helps maintain accurate range estimates of the vehicle and display the remaining power.

That is a very low range from a LR, ours is averaging 3.3 miles per kWh at the moment in the colder weather, so an easy 250 mile range, and if I drive with economy in mind I can get nearer 280.

What sort of driving do you do? Is it similar to us? i.e. no long journeys, full pre-conditioning and no thought about range? (Yes, I know we need to change this and be more eco!)

Ha! A Wileeeeeey response if ever there was one...I think I should 'try' to get some range as the first thing they will probably ask me is 'did you put the heater on?' But yes perhaps I should contact them. Maybe they gave me an extra short range by mistake.

I must admit I did enjoy when the postman asked me if the car was going to self drive and run him over as everytime he walks into the driveway the lights come on!!!

Most of my journeys are more than 30 miles at a go to be fair, and often much longer.

Short journeys are the worst if you extrapolate them up to the whole battery pack,

This may explain it as the average journey is probably 10-15 miles.
