    Looks good.

I have been reading quite a bit about this next installment, apparently they've done away with the overused CGI from Episode 7 and are bringing back actual puppets for the "unusual" characters. Even Snoke is going to be a physical character rather than computer generated.

I just wonder if we'll find out who he is! The last of the Sith Lords almost certainly. Darth Plagueis, possibly. Or Palpatine back from the dead?

To be honest I'm not as desperate to find out as I thought I would be, the force is weak these days.

I think it's easy to lose sight of the fact that Star Wars were conceived as kids (or at a push family) movies. Don't get me wrong, I loved the original trilogy - but I was about 9 when I saw the first one (which absolutely blew me away at the time), and a teenager when I saw Return Of The Jedi. I've regularly watched them in the decades since, and certainly the last few times I've been increasingly disappointed. The script/acting in IV in particular, are absolutely terrible. No amount of CGI rehash can make up for that.

Even on the basis that it is a family movie, Pt VII was such a blatant rehash of the oringinal two that I found it pretty hard-going. I actually think the underlying story arc of the prequel trilogy was better. Rogue One was quite good though.

I enjoy them more with a sense of nostalgia, than on their own merits TBH.

That said, even as a grumpy middle-aged bloke, I'm hoping to be entertained by Pt 8. I just can't get wrapped up in all the hype.

I'm a big Star Wars fan and loved rogue one. Sadly I thought the force awakens was dreadful, and just doesn't bear repeated watching like the original trilogy. I'm pretty interested in this latest instalment but the recent fashion of showing shots in trailers that never make the final movie makes watching them a bit pointless in a way!?

    looks ace

Takes me back to my youth, and when I re/lived the whole thing with my son.

Loved The Force Awakens but accept it was a rehash/homage and rogue 1 was ace.

Maybe I'm easily please but I can't think of anything better to watch on lad/dad night

    Looking forward to it.

As mentioned above, The Force Awakens was a little disappointing. Coincidentally we watched it again this afternoon as a warm up for a repeat viewing of Rogue One which is excellent.

Another sign that I'm getting old, the last two movies were dire in fact I switch off Rogue One about half way through and I have no intentions of sitting through any more.

I just watched the last one, Star Wars 8 or whatever. The one with added fake Peter Cushing. It was marginally better than 7, I suppose. But it's no Moonraker.

The new movies just feel like they are playing to a new young audience and are trying to give the diehard fans more of the same. I love my sci-fi and much prefer the reboot of Star Trek over this series.

Bring on Alien Covenant and Guardians of the Galaxy 2

    Star Wars VIII trailer

Die hard SW nut here too. Force Awakens 7/10, Rogue One 8.5/10. Hoping the rumours that episode 8 will be a darker affair are true. Empire still reigns supreme IMO and the darkest so far.

One thing I wish they'd stop with is the equal opportunies PC stuff. Yes it's great to have more ladies in the SW universe but having heard that the latest important character is an engineer called Rose gets on my nerves a bit. Are all new important characters in SW going to be female? To further my point, the lead character in Battlefront 2 is an imperial pilot called Iden Versio... female... again.

Is that sexist? I don't think it is. It's fair enough to represent gender/race/sexuality etc but then there's being blatantly PC. A bit like when they shoe horned the fact that Sulu was gay in Star Trek Beyond (even George Takei was annoyed about that).

There was a bit in Force Awakens where it was blatantly "look some stormtroopers are girls you know!" The First Order is an equal opportunities employer. Lol

Yeah I can understand Takei being annoyed about that. He's an actor . His personal sexuality should have zero bearing on a character he's established and played for years. It was never part of Sulu's character what sexual orientation he was. You don't see Gandalf going home to his husband just because Sir Ian Mcklellan is gay in his private life. Its like inverse prejudice.

    That did make me laugh

Though he did have a fondness for young boy like Hobbits and their rings. 'Keep it secret, keep it safe"

I saw the teaser when they premiered it at Celebrations earlier this month. Not as impressive as I would have liked but still good and of course I will be seeing it at the advanced showing.

The winner here in this trailer is the Irish tourist board.

The outdoor scenes were filmed on the Skelligs and some in Donegal.

I wonder how they will handle the late Carrie Fisher's role for this movie now Disney confirms she won't appear after VIII.

Surely they originally had plans for her to continue into the new film

Allegedly they cut a lot of her lines from 'force awakens' because she was struggling. Sadly I thought she was very wooden in that movie, and I say that as a fan of the movies

The sad fact is that its very hard acting in films and requires a huge amount of personal energy from any actor. They have to work 24/7 on their bodies and performance and the audience only sees about 10% of that total effort on the screen.

The audience has very little comprehension of what goes in to making a film. Its actually a miracle that the final product comes out and the film itself is even okay let aline magnificient. I wouldn't wish being an actor on my worst enemy. The succesful ones have to work so hard most people cannot understand it.

To an extent I agree. A part of me kinda wishes they'd killed off Leia in the years in between 6&7. Would have prevented the awkwardness in trying to explain why Han and her split up, given Kylo some serious mummy death issues which would echo Anakin's struggles with the same subject in the (horrific beyond words and still can't sit through them without wincing) prequels and also prevented a lot of "wtf happened to Carrie Fisher?" comments.

That being said... I hope they continue on the upturn with 8. I always describe the force awakens as a step in the right direction and although I still go to the original trilogy (despecialised of course) first and foremost for a star wars hit, I'm glad these new films exist. At least they numb the pain uncle George subjected us to with the prequels. We should also remember that Jedi wasn't perfect and actually what led to SW being dumbed down and turned into a kid's franchise for many years.

Rogue One was awesome though... with the exception of the needless cameos from Artoo/3PO and the cantina guys and the nearly but not quite CGI Cushing and Fisher (they could have been a bit more subtle there). Perhaps because they weren't confined to the official blueprint of how to make a SW movie makes it a better film.

But whilst we're on the subject of new films... I'm glad they're making them but I really really don't want the Han Solo film. Firmly believe that the first time we meet Han should be in the cantina in the first film.

The CGI ruined it for me - they could have filmed in a different way (i'm thinking how they got around the Olly Reed death in Galdiator).

Agreed on all the spin offs we've heard about to date - not sure I really care about Han's back story, the murkiness is what makes him fascianting as you, very slowly, find out about some elements in the original trilogy. Same with the proposed Fett spin off, it's Disney milking the cash cow.

Not worth it's own thread but if anyone has the VR kit for the PS4, the X-wing level is astonishing in terms of how it makes you feel like you are actually there.

Yeah they could have done some more subtle shots rather than giving so much full on screentime to CGI Cushing and we probably didn't even need to see Leia's face. Yup absolutely hit the nail on the head re the spin offs. Fett, Obi wan and Solo don't need a back story at all. Part of the charm of the original trilogy is like you said we learn slowly more about them as they progress. I would however like to see more of Vader being completely bad ass like at the end of Rogue One. Perhaps set between SW and ESB or between ESB and ROTJ. Marvel have done some really good comics during these two periods recently.

Personally i think the star wars stuff is pretty much dead, it worked in the 70s and 80s, but nowadays it's just a bit old hat and not even close to being as good as other franchises that are out now.

I watched Rogue One as it was being stated as a great comeback after the force awakens letdown, but although R1 wasn't bad, it was average at best, same predictability, same daft stuff and so on, this one also appeared to waste a lot of talent (Forrest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, etc), whilst centring around two poor lead actors.

Lets hope 8 is better, but if they still have emo vader wandering around and return of the depressed jedi then it'll be more of the same i fear.

Hmm. I'm genuinely trying to think of other franchises that are out now which are way superior to Star Wars and I'm coming up with nothing. Unless you mean the rash of identikit superhero movies, all with the same plot, same jokes and same cgi?!?! Or the godawful Alien movies, childish fast and furious or spectacularly awful transformers series. I could go on but I won't!!!

I disagree about the Alien series - on the whole it's far superior to Star Wars in terms of acting, direction and dialogue, and it's far more adult than the (very) simplistic, childish storytelling in SW. I still think SW is just very highly-polished, high production-value fluff. It's become such a cultural phenomenon that people have lost any kind of proportion of its cinematic value (hence grown men discussing the merits of a film series that brought us C3PO and Ewoks). I really don't think it compares with genuine cinematic classics such as The Godfather, Goodfellas, 2001, The Good The Bad and The Ugly etc. (But NOT Lord of the Rings - another load of high production-value nonsense IMO).

Objectively, it's great family entertainment, but no more than that. However, especially for those of us who saw it as kids in the 70s/80s (and later generations who saw it for the first time as kids) it's very hard to view it without a strong sense of nostalgia, and "magic".

For long-form storytelling, I don't actually think movies are the ideal medium, as the economics of big studio productions seem to generate complete rubbish like Transformers, F&F and most superhero stuff (Marvel and DC).

If you want grown-up, quality storytelling, watch the TV - there's much better stuff on there.

I'll give you Alien and Aliens - absolutely brilliant, then it all fell apart. I guess what I always liked most about Star Wars is the whole world design and the family related element. Sure there's better dramatic adult aimed stuff out there, but for sci-fi it's at the top of the heap for me!

Thought Force Awakens was perfectly decent, nowt wrong with it at all. Rogue One was fantastic, really powerful. The Han Solo one could be great if done properly - although some of the pics from the filming put me in mind of a brickie rather than the coolest space rogue out there.
