    Mil Sub

    Hi,
Can anyone recommend a Rolex Military Submariner homage ? I’ve seen one or two but they didn’t really do it for me. The Mkii Fulcrum was pretty nice but no longer produced and at around £2k a bit above my limit. I’d love to see a Time factors version of this rarity so if you read this Eddie could you add it to the list of potential projects - it was used by British military after all!! Thanks- Oli

Have you thought about buying a replica from TS Watches?

I’m not overly fussed about the name more the aesthetic but they look ok. Has anyone bought from them? Wondering how good they are.

    A word of advice.

You don't want to be talking about replicas around here unless it's to out the people trying to peddle them. There are fora for discussing them. TZ isn't one of them.

Plenty won't care but plenty, and in my opinion correctly, don't believe they're acceptable in any way, shape or form.

Squale do one. They are quite nice.

It depends on your budget as mentioned Squale and Steinhart do one but what about the watch that replaced the Rolex?
    The CWC.
Similar aesthetics but it’s not a homage.

Buy the parts & assemble one yourself... here’s one I knocked together a few years ago

I had the Steinhart Ocean Vintage Military, it was an excellent watch and I regret selling it. Had the 42mm and it’s a solid 42mm watch, not a shrinking violet but then my wrists aren’t huge at 6.75” and it looked and wore fine on me. For £330 or whatever they are it’s a lot of watch and is a very faithful homage to the Mil Sub. If you want a smaller version Gnomon do the 39mm model but it’s not always available.

I bought mine after weighing up against the Squale version, but for me Squale looked a bit daft with the cartoon shark on the dial and ‘Squale’ written twice. Also the Steinhart bezel looked better, I preferred it without a date - and it was cheaper and available in the U.K. without import fees.

As mentioned, Steinharts two variations at 39mm and 42mm will be hard to beat. If you get the mark 1 version of the 42, it even says 200m instead of 300m - lol!

I have both 39 and 42mm and a 6.75" wrist if you want pics.

Funnily enough I was kind of thinking of this, but thought it would be rather tricky. I will look into this further thank you. As said earlier, I don’t want a Rolex copy/fake whatever but a watch with the aesthetic and one that won’t fall to bits after a fortnight :).

The Squale looks great except for the logo and double name. Ruined. Definitely looking into how easy it is to Mod these sort of models. Cheers

    Mil Sub

The aptly named Walter Mitty Timepieces are a customised watch the maker with Seiko movements
I commissioned one whilst p1ssed a few months ago (I guess we have all had booze induced purchases) and it’s not a bad watch for the money.
It’s closer to the original than the Steinhart in my eyes.

    Lume is not bad either

Sinnlover, are you mixing the milsub up with an explorer sub? Surely the milsub has round plots, no 3, 6, 9 and the T centre logo?

Thanks for bringing them to my attention, hadn't heard of them before, loving their name and had a quick look at their site, they have some rather interesting options. Cheers.

No I chose the explorer sub dial to keep it a bit different but there is a standard style dial you can choose
(There were also a very small number - 50 ish) milsubs with the 3-6-9 dial prior to the introduction of the 5513/17. The A/6538 and 5512. These had Mercedes hands though.
So this watch is kind of a half way house homage to both.

By strange coincidence I was reading this thread this morning, some here might find it interesting

Here's the Steinhart OVM 42mm on the OEM bracelet if it helps.

Every day's a school day. The 50 explorer dial milsubs must have colossal value now! I'm thinking few will exist.

Looks great but What’s the build quality like. Does the movement keep reasonable time?

I think it’s acceptable for the money I paid
The crown is a small but not overly so, the bezel has a nice click and is spot on. The domed plexi is a nice touch
The hour and minute hand are the correct shape, proportions and finish to the originals which is one thing that put me off the OVM.
They do sometimes have offers on Instagram which is well worth looking out for.

We take fakes very seriously here. Especially faked Rolex watches, which can, and have, robbed people of a lot of money.

Why not buy the CWC diver. It’s got the heritage of the milsub and it was the Mod replacement for the Submariner.

Just looked, most are new and posted from Italy, pretty much same prices as on the official website (same company?).
One guy offering one used for £200 or best offer, but wont post until lockdown ends, can't see anyone jumping at that one!

I have an approx 7.5” wrist and I think the 42mm Steinhart OVM is a great watch, this is my second.

I had a Steinhart Ocean Vintage Military 42mm last year. I loved it, it kept great time but was a little too big so got moved on (for a good price too, which was nice).

Gnomon Watches in the US do a 39mm version, which is exclusive to them.

Yesterday, I received a new stock alert from Gnomon. It's been out of stock for some time.

    I've ordered one!

I had the Steinhart OVM 42 Mk 1, sold it and then bought the Gnomon 39mm version. Both are well made but the smaller one suits my wrist better.

    Seconded!

As I said in another thread today, I'd rather have an iconic watch than an homage to one. CWC is still iconic, even if not a Milsub.

I have the same black pvd CWC diver that you have, Sinnlover. Perfect size and really comfortable.

Those no-date CWC's look amazing, too!

    Nice collection :)

There's some great reviews out there about the Ginault Ocean Rover. Good one on watchreport.com

It is a little pricey for a homage at 1299 USD

I’ve nearly pulled the plug on a couple CWCs in the past but found it hard to justify the price tag for a quartz watch. The prices the SBS Mkii goes for now in quartz is astonishing imho. I’m not knocking quartz but in terms of value I’d be expecting a mechanical watch. An original CWC auto diver as used by the forces (tritium lume) would be something special though!! I’m keeping an eye on Eddies PRS-3(?) CWC diver type watch and expect it to be as good at far better price point.

Not worn either,, but to my eyes the 42mm Steinhart OVM looks better - 39mm is a nicer size (for me) but the dial/bezel looks out of proportion in the smaller watch.
