Calling on the wisdom of the forum for London restaurant recommendations

I am off to London for a couple of days and am looking for some grub recommendations. Nothing too fancy gastropub, pizza, european would fit the bill.

Staying in Covent Garden, am at the National Gallery Sunday for the Monet Exhibition so looking for something close in the evening.

Then Tower of London on Monday so something around there for a late afternoon rest stop before travelling home.

    Thanks in advance.

I always like to a trip to the Guinea Butt, around Mayfair from memory good selection of food and beers and great steaks.
Alternatively, Flat Iron in Covent Garden is ok and much cheaper but does get very busy. Enjoy your trip!

Il Bordello’s in Wapping is a short hop from tower bridge and gas super Italian food.

    http://www.ilbordello.com/

Also try and have a look / drink in Wilton’s music hall. It’s truly like stepping back in time.

I'm afraid that it's going to be a bit random if you don't narrow down your choice of cuisine and budget. The locality you've mentioned is pretty wide and there are plenty of pubs, eateries, trattoria (etc), restaurants and other establishments on offer. I see that you're pretty accepting..."gastropub, pizza, european"...and I might suggest Belgo if you're into Belgian beer or several fairly usual British style pubs with decent food, but...

For pizza, l'antica pizzeria da Michele can't be beaten. 199 Baker Street.

If you like a glass, then The Cork & Bottle just off Leicester Square will be very convenient, decent food and excellent wine.

If you can get a table outside then try The Ivy Market Grill https://theivymarketgrill.com. They don't take bookings outside so you may be lucky. Not too expensive.

Also by Covent Garden an inside option is here https://balthazarlondon.com

    Or something here https://www.somersethouse.org.uk/eating-and-drinking

Alternatively, as said above, around Covent Garden there are all the usual suspects e.g. Byron, Cote, Loch Fyne etc.

    Enjoy.

    Seconded on Balthazar

I would look at the pre theatre menus at some of the nice places around Covent Garden. Can get great food for the price of a meal in a more “normal” restaurant and don’t have to sit for hours! Also plenty of time for evening activities even if you aren’t going to a show. Went to Joel Robuchon last week and there are plenty of others

I can’t see why you would travel to somewhere like St Johns wood or Mayfair when you have great food 3min walk away.

If there are a couple of you and you fancy a meat coma, the boss hog platter from Bodeans rarely disappoints.

    Novikov Mayfair
Is this any good? Walked past it on the way from another meal in Mayfair (Jamavar-very good) and nearly fainted at the prices on the menu outside. Seemed to priced for and frequented by wealthy Russians and that for me isn't usually a good thing? Seemed to have picked loads of expensive ingredients and ensured they were all on the menu for those who like to tell people they have eaten this and that. Maybe I am a little cynical though!

I was delighted to find out recently that the Saravana Bhavan - one of my favourite Delhi eateries, now has a branch on Charing Cross Road.

    UK - Leicester Square
    17 Charing Cross Rd,
    London - WC2H OEP

    Fabulous dhosas.
    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

I love roka on Charlotte st. Wolesly on Piccadilly never fails to deliver.

On a budget hawksmoor in seven dials do a good value set menu. Plenty of pop up stalls along the south bank by festival hall if weather is nice.
