    Space X launch

    https://www.spacex.com/launches/

On Wednesday, the California company SpaceX will launch a mission to the International Space Station (ISS). It's something the firm has done many times before, taking cargo to the sky-high laboratory. But on this occasion, the firm will be transporting people.

It's one of those seminal moments in the history of spaceflight.

When Nasa astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken lift off atop their Falcon-9 rocket, inside their Crew Dragon capsule, it will mark the first time humans have left US territory to reach low-Earth orbit in almost nine years.

But more than that, it sees a shift to the commercialisation of human space transportation - of companies selling "taxi" rides to government and anyone else who wants to purchase the service
    Should be a good watch.

Such a significant launch, hopefully goes ahead weather permitting.

Yes it is a bit nerve racking. Wonder what the astronauts are feeling apart from feeling really cool in them suits. Must admit everything looks very slick. I didn't think you could get a capsule to look so good. Sure I read somewhere the last human launch the cockpit was switches and dials where as this is all touch screen. Hope the menus are quick to navigate.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are the calmest of anyone.

Well, the last human launch from US soil was the Space Shuttle and that was originally now-ancient tech dials and switches from the 1970s, although I think the Shuttles got a glass cockpit upgrade at some point (which itself would now look rather out of date compared to anything truly modern).

Just been talking about this at work, so looking forward to it.

I see Elon has gone for the minimal look in the capsule, and just hope the menu's are simple to navigate.

If it's anything like me navigating settings on my phone they will be at mars by the time they find 'park'

Its all automatic flight, controls are there just if needed.

It certainly does look futuristic, from the capsule, controls to flight suits.

    Looking forward to watching it.

Would love to go and watch a launch. Especially the falcon heavy, just watching that on TV was amazing.

    Yes, indeed.

And I find the booster landings just as spectacular as the launches.

The landings where they touch down upright look like something off Thunderbirds, only better because it's real!
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

Search for the visibility after the launch. It should be crossing the UK’s southern regions

I think everyone is missing the crucial question.

Does this capsule have ludicrous mode?

ISS visible over the UK at 21.22 this evening too.

Amazing to think when you see that, that the Space Shuttle will be blasting off soon after to catch it!

I’ve read a few reports saying the shuttle itself might be visible at about 21.50.

It is a space ship that shuttles astronauts back and forth. Therefore this new one is also a “space shuttle”.

I was lucky enough, at the age of 9, to be in Florida at the time of the Space Shuttle Atlantis takeoff on May 19th 2000. We’d been doing the Disney thing but I remember dad getting us up really early and getting in the car to drive as close to the Kennedy Space Centre as we could. I seem to remember we didn’t get far out of Orlando before hitting the traffic jam that was every other Floridian trying to do the same, so we got out of the car and watched from the road. It was quite impressive to behold.

I’ll definitely be outside tonight with a glass of wine hoping to catch a glimpse.

It should be, but I guess it depends on how late the sun goes down.

The interior of that capsule looks properly impressive - very cool and high tec.

Astronauts seem so excited they appear to have dozed off...
