    Moonswatch fakery - caveat emptor

Well, I never expected this, but it seems that there’s enough money in it for forgers to make and sell counterfeit moonswatches… Should’ve known better I suppose, but a sensibly priced moon-phase one on eBay turned out to be hooky. 100% feedback buyer, good communications etc so no obvious red flags initially.

The packaging was good (although now I look closely the colour on the outer sleeve is slightly different from the fold-out box within), the leaflet decent quality, it looked very like the Mars one I got from a boutique, which Mrs Cain has “adopted”.

But… The moonphase went round and round with the hour hand… And when I pushed the chrono start button, the back fell off. Which is odd, for a one-piece case. And I am reasonably confident that Swatch don’t use Sunon movements.

So, I’m now in the “item not as described” process and look forward to getting my money back shortly before entropy reaches its end point and the universe undergoes heat-death.

    Lesson identified, lesson learned.

    Glad you spotted it.

TBH I thought looking at them originally they would be an ideal target for counterfeiters.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

There are a few tells that are yet to be faked (Meshing between crystal and dial), but some are very close. There's a couple of decent threads on reddit which help, sadly it's probably best to go with either a Swatch store direct. Or possibly StockX who do guarantee authenticity.
I assume it's under the value to qualify for eBay Authenticity Guarantee. Hopefully you'll have a decent seller who will refund you with no bother.

I wonder how many of these the seller has sold without the recipients realising?
    Cheers,

There are so many fakes on eBay. I've tried reporting them before, and even gave them the reasons why they were fake (99% of the time it was because the instructions were in a plastic bag), but eBay don't care. I would just avoid it all together for Moonswatches to be honest.

I think you could get them no box for £13

Didn’t someone receive a fake one via SC a while back?

There's loads of these available on certain Chinese sites. People often buy them to fit the innards into stainless steel cases. Not a simple job apparently and much better to risk a cheap fake than an expensive real one. I'm not condoning it but it's quite popular in the modding world.

Yes, even Casios you can usually get for £14 and sometimes less get faked. If you see a Casio digital for £7 or less on eBay, it won't be a real one.

Update: I strongly suspect the vendor was unaware. They’ve agreed return and refund overnight and are giving every sign of doing the right thing, so that’s good at least.

That's good, but cynically perhaps I wonder if he has let any more out in to the world that have gone unnoticed?
    Cheers,
    Neil.

Oh, so do I. I flagged the item as counterfeit with eBay as well as getting the return sorted so hopefully that flag might put the Eye of Sauron on the seller a bit (a man can dream). She isn’t a high volume seller and no watches at all that I can see, so who knows.
