    Astrophotography

Anyone else taking pictures of far away things?

My son was really interested in trying it, so a few years ago I bought lots of kit and we started doing it at weekends. It probably took a couple of months to research the kit buy, order it, and put it all together. Last year was a complete washout with the weather, but we're hoping to get out more if skies are clear this year. I've automated the capture of the images and most of the processing, so even my young kids can do it. My son was shortlisted for the young astrophotographer of the year a couple of years ago, and my daughter wants to try this year.

Here's some examples taken in Epping, just on the edge of London. We have bad skies, but filters can deal with most the the issues.

    Andromeda

    Horsehead Nebula and Flame Nebula

    Orion Nebula

    Crescent Nebula

Wow! Thanks for posting these. I have thought about trying to get into much less ambitious astrophotography (a decent picture of the moon would be my starting point!) so this is inspiration indeed.

Superb stuff! I’ve tried astrophotography a few times, and it’s never ended well for me.

    Fabulous photographs!

I was amazed by them, particularly the “Horsehead Nebula”, and I’d love to try and take some pictures similar to this.

If it is not too technical, and if you have time, would you mind please sharing a “shopping list” of gear that would be good for someone starting out.

Caveat: I fully understand and acknowledge that this is a massive rabbit hole that I am potentially standing on the edge of, staring in to, and that the info would be shared at my own risk!

    Many thanks.

Great! I've never had a go before, but spent many hours watching Astrobackyard etc - the technical aspect to it quite appeals.

Sadly I cannot see any images. I’ll try a different browser.

    Great photos.

They've got me thinking. I'm sure there must be an astronomical variation of the 'Guess where' thread gestating here. Perhaps something along the lines of a nicely composed shot of a suitably photogenic planet, with a casual glimpse of the appropriate MoonSwatch in the foreground.

Amazing photos, well done for putting in the time and effort to capture them.

Astrophotography is high on my list of hobbies I’d like to try. I’ve looked into it several times but always get lost with all the options so I’d second the request for a kit list!

I’d love to be able to get shots like that and also of planetary objects.

Looks amazing. Certainly a rabbit hole (black hole?) I'm likely to fall into soon!
