Thread: VPNs for dummy's

    VPNs for dummy's

I have a free VPN with Google, about to be embedded into Android

I have a free one with Microsoft

I have a free one with Dashlane

Are they all the same? Which to use and when, just leave on? What do they do really?

    Should I use a VPN?
Yes, almost certainly. A VPN has many advantages, including:

Hiding your traffic from only your Internet Service Provider.
Hiding your downloads (such as torrents) from your ISP and anti-piracy organizations.
Hiding your IP from third-party websites and services, helping you blend in and preventing IP based tracking.
Allowing you to bypass geo-restrictions on certain content.

You need to be able to trust a VPN provider as everything passes through them.
Free ones are expected to pay for their servers by selling your data on.

Four well renown ones are PIA,AirVPn, Mullvad and protonVPN

I get an app called Ms Defender which has a full suite of 'defences' for mobiles and laptops

I have no idea how it differs from the one I get with Google One subscription or about to get with Android 15

For anyone looking for a VPN at a budget price - I recently switched from Nord to PIA.

I signed up to PIA via topcashback, a 2 year plan cost me £42.61 and I subsequently received £29.83 cashback. It took about 6 weeks for the cashback to be paid............... so £13 for 2 years, and the service has been fine so far.

Microsoft keeps blocking to many UK sites even BT connections in the house , that's in the bin, now to try Dashlane

Proton VPN is one of the best for respecting your privacy and personal data*, and they have a free version: https://protonvpn.com/free-vpn

    * Has no data or speed limits
    * Has no advertisements
    * Does not log your online activity

Unless I was using the free wifi of a coffee shop/airport I wouldn’t use a free VPN or a bundled VPN from Google or MS.

Pay for a proper one or don’t bother if you want privacy or use whatever lets you watch iplayer abroad.

That said I do use the free proton version very occasionally but that is very limited

    Hello

I have Surfshark on my mobile, IPad, MacBook, Firestick. Just as an additional layer of security.

No issues with it. There are usually deals to be had with TCB and others.

I’ve also used Express VPN in the past and that was ok.

I use Express VPN, but notice that AVG Internet Security Suite (I use that on a multi-machine license) also offer a VPN in that suite.

Well Hotspot Shield with Dashlane seems to be the only one that works properly so I'm sticking with that one
