Do Rolex charge a premium for servicing gold watches , my brother has been quoted €1600 for a ten year old day date .

Why not just phone Rolex / RSC, instead of asking on here ?!
We need the full facts.
That is much more than a movement service, but if he has chipped the glass, cut the crown, grazed the bezel, twisted the clasp, dented the case-back or frolicked at the sauna with his crown out (steady....) then there could be a lot more to pay for.
Perhaps because it might be of interest to members of a watch forum .

The 1600 should be euros , my brother lives in Ireland .

I'm going to sound like a broken record, I'd always go ask for a quote from https://www.centurywatchrepairs.co.uk/ and see if they can help you. Reputable Indie watch repairers are the way forward if they have the tooling and the parts IMO.
If my memory serves me correctly, Rolex wanted about £500 for an new SS clasp when my Explorer II was in for a service so I could imagine a gold one being pricey.
Well I have just collected the watch ..£850 , it needed a new crown and a spring bar . It came in a nice little leather pouch and a two year warranty . I had a chat with the rather lovely sales lady who asked if I would like to go on an expression of interest list .. I enquired about the the new titanium yacht master .. they expect to get one this year and maybe two next year and politely with a smile she said no chance .
