Evening forum hive mind, hoping someone can help.
Boy is 16 next week. Will be getting a surfboard coz he's a water child anyway and snorkels, swims endlessly, but he's been surfing here and in Costa Rica for a year and is addicted.
Him and his mates have organised and paid for a surf holiday after their GCSEs - camping, surfing and no doubt illegally obtaining cider. I'd like to get him a watch he can use in the water, and also as a beater. He's got an issued G10 a friend (to whom it was issued) gave him which he loves, but I'm looking for something as a water beater / summer watch etc. Here's what I ideally want:
- under 40mm (anything else will be too big on him)
- 200m+ WR
- not on a bracelet (he hates bling and regards bracelets as showy)
- ideally bullet-proof
- power doesn't really matter but solar would be perfect
- not very expensive
Right now the only thing I can think of is a Promaster Tough, but it's more of a field watch like his G10 and I really want something obviously dive.
Any thoughts chaps?

Citizen Eco drive, like this, it’s 42mm but he can grow with it lol. Whip off the bracelet and get it on a NATO.

Cheers..

Also not lost on me that a Baby Dreadnought would be perfect (can always stick a rubber strap on it), but having had a look I see I've missed the last one to crop up on SC and I sold mine ages ago.
Seiko Prospex Solar
SNE571P1 or SNE569P1. Nice and compact, slim and well finished. Just change the bracelet for a tropic or something....
I don’t think you could go wrong with a CWC. They’re bullet proof too.
Tissot Seastar can be had for under £400.

Though it is 45mm.
Hamilton Navy Scuba, quartz? 37mm.
Might be pushing the budget a little though.

Think I've found the answer. Luminox Sea Turtle 0300. 39mm, plastic case and strap. Only issue is it's 100m WR but that'll do. Also very unbusy dial, which I know he likes (from passing judgement on my various watches). Think that's presently leading the pack.
A g shock square is a small watch and pretty much perfect for a 16 year old. GW5610U would be my choice or maybe another square in a bright colour. The GLX ones are made for surfers. My lad had one when he was 16 learning to skateboard - never managed to break it
I used to wear a rubber or plastic cased G-shock when windsurfing.
Apart from avoiding the risk of slamming the watch down onto the board and breaking the watch, you really don't want dent your board with a chunky metal case (never mind damaging your wrist).
The Luminox Sea Turtle can be worn in the surf bar afterwards.

Like a modern g shock square. Awesome screen which would be very legible when in direct sun and covered in water droplets. Cheap too:)

Casio MRW-200 - lots of colour options:
Dugena are brilliant VFM, their 40mm diver comes in various colours, and the strap is easily changed for rubber/NATO/whatevs -
MWC do an assortment of 39 and 40mm quartz divers that are also terrific value* (often cheaper on ebay):
*check the sizes - not all linked are 39-40mm
Solar Casioak has to be worth considering, too - they wear much smaller than their nominal 45mm IME.
Thanks for all the advice guys. Sone gems in there. Have gone for a Luminox!

That was quick!
I was about to suggest: the WaterKing.
Why a dive watch? A watch with 100m WR is more than enough for shallow water submersion. The G10 should be adequate provided seals are good and the watch isn’t leaking down the pendant tube. I’ve restored and sold a few of these recently and has no difficulty getting 4 bar WR, which is plenty for the activities it will be exposed to.

I got one of these, green dial, for my lad.
It is great - but understand comments about slamming it on his kit.
G-shock, the standard square solar one, in a natty colour could never be wrong.
It is always my go-to sport watch, or travel in less salubrious places

Apologies here FrontierGibberish but Luminox watches are terrible in my opinion. My brother has one he never wears so offered it to me. After handling the watch I didn’t accept it. I’ve never felt a watch that felt so plasticky and light, the crown was shocking and certainly didn’t inspire confidence. It felt like a toy watch. Sorry OP, maybe you have received yours already. Please let us know what you think. My advice like others would be a square G Shock, love mine and they’re bulletproof (nearly). If not a G Shock, then a Seiko Solar diver would be my recommendation.
