Thanks for all the input folks - some great suggestions!
I've narrowed the list down a bit:
A Skoda Yeti or Octavia Scout (wife a bit brand-snooty)
Toyota Landcruiser or Hilux (can't seem to find a good one)
Some form of Land Rover - Freelander's still an option, Range Rover's seem plentiful, Disco's seem a little overpriced and the wife-favourite Evoque is really pushing the budget
A Volvo - XC60, XC70 or XC90
Yes a "200 series" Landcruiser values are still quite high - TBH all Landcruiser values are still quite high and it's not unusual for leggy and tatty 20+yr old models (80 series, 100 series etc. both badged "Amazon") to fetch exorbitant prices. Prices for a decent one will be astronomical.
The main problem, as has been mentioned is tin worm - if you treat it early and keep on top of it, the mechanicals are pretty bombproof. So if you can find a "good" one at a decent price, snap it up!
My first thought was a Subaru and I see some have beat me to it.
We have a 2011 Legacy estate and think it is excellent. Large, comfortable, big boot, plenty of room in the back with reclining rear seats. Automatic, with what I think is an excellent CVT gearbox.
We would definitely get another one, although they don't make them anymore. The Outback is essentially the same, but a little more rugged.
"I forget who it was that recommended men for their soul's good to do each day two things they disliked ... it is a precept that I have followed scrupulously; for every day I have got up and I have gone to bed."
LR Defender, ' twisted' maybe.
If you do go for an Evoque make sure it has a good warranty..
I vote for an Audi RS6!
Which xc90 do you have? I'm looking at them now.

I had a 2007 Subaru Forester XTEN with a remap to 250bhp. It would have covered all your requirements while being a LOT more fun.
