Old fashioned ink well?
Anyone any idea what this thing is? Stamped ‘ebony’ on the base and appears well made.
Ash tray?
I'd go for inkwell too. That's really nice and would have been expensive when new, I imagine. Reminds me of the desk mounted ones we had at school. I was an 'ink monitor' at some point - a post not without its share of risk for someone so young. And yes, I am now ancient.

Looks like a diffuser sticks holder.
Thanks all. Inkwell seems most likely to me. Would it have had a glass liner - no sign of ink or it’s just unused?
Yes it is an inkwell but it would normally fit into a wooden or china base for stability. The last thing you want is to tip it over when full of ink.
It was aimed at the domestic market, office ones were usually made of glass with a screw on top that incorporated a hinged flap.

For use in a light aircraft on a longer flight than usual.......and for a small "chap".
Ebony is a very dense, hard wood, so it's not going to be significantly porous to ink - and of course, being black, black ink won't leave much in the way of apparent evidence.
Ebony's never been cheap, and being as hard as it is, it's not easy to work, so a turned item of this quality will have come from a pretty high-end desk-set.
My first thought was inkwell as well.
Antique F*e**light?
N.B. NSFW if you intend to Google it!
A search on eBay for ‘ebony inkwell’ should answer the question.
