Barbour do a good one:

I've been looking for a decent field jacket for a while now.
I don't want an authentic military jacket with massive baggy arms, enough room to fit 50 magazines in the pockets and a full winter combat pack underneath.
On the other hand I don't want a camp, slim-fit, cinched waist, cat walk designer effort either.
I just want enough room to fit a jumper or fleece underneath like a normal coat.
I'd like it to have some rain protection but doesn't need to be fully waterproof. A hood in the stand-up collar is good.
I've looked at so many jackets now but nothing quite fits the bill.
Any ideas or brands I should at? TIA

Something a little different ? I'd maybe look at the Fjallaven Vidda Pro Jacket. Plenty of pockets, funnel hood and the G 1000 material is fairly robust. Although it's not 100% waterproof, using different layers of the wax can adjust the wind/water resistance depending on season. It's also insect proof as well which can help in long grass/woods. Sizing, I've found these run a little large. Fjallraven jackets can get a bit pricey, although if you hunt around you should get these jackets in the sales. A similar jacket is the fjallraven Greenland jacket , which is more basic/cheaper version however still has the G 1000 material, The only downside is the hood, which is no where near as functional as the Vidda Pro.

I have a fjallraven raven (unlined) and a Barbour sapper. Both good depending on temperature.
Thanks for all the replies. I’ve already looked at most of these and they all have something missing/not quite right. I’m a fussy bugger
1. Barbour: I don’t want an oily wax finish.
2. CC was the closest: good fabric, good colour, made in the UK, but no hood. It’s a small thing but I like that zip on the collar and a hood for those light showers.
3. The Fjällrävens don’t work: the Vidda is too similar to my winter Greenland and the Raven green field jacket is too light green.
4. The Hebtroco is quite nice but wool, and the sales pitch makes my eyes hurt with all the tattooed hipsters in ‘normal’ everyday locations.
5. I think I looked at Filson previously but will go back and see.
So you see my problem. Not only am I a fussy bugger, the market doesn’t seem to do my perfect jacket.
Since writing the OP I discovered that Alpha do a more civvy version of the M65 so I’ve ordered an M and an L to see if it works. It’s all cotton but I thought I could NixWax it. But I’ve also since discovered that the zip in the collar is purely aesthetic and there is no hood, so they’ll probably get returned and I’ll start again or give up.
Any more suggestions welcome in the interim
Hilltrek make waterproof Ventile cotton jackets and smocks with hoods. Again, British made. Maybe too far from your field jacket idea. I like the look of the smocks.

I have their chore jacket which is very good. ( Sorry about the Hipsters in the advertising! )
Pentagon Artaxes might do the trick, I have just had one delivered and seems to be fine, with a fleece underneath it should be well cosy.
Schott do an M65 with a real hood. I have one, and its very nice, but would need proofing, or greenland waxing.
It has to be Frahm.

I have one and thoroughly recommended.
Also, lots of positive reviews.
I just bought a Corinthia HIG 3.0 - exactly fits your description.
Mega warm, robust material
Zip-away hood.
Loads of draw cords for trapping warm air - but all hidden within pockets so you are not covered in dangling cords.
Pockets but not POCKETS!!!!
Waterproof enough
and apart from being slightly Olive Drab, it is not too Walt. (They do other plain colours too)

Might be something suitable in here?
I can recommend the quality of these products and their ability to keep you protected and comfortable in the Scottish weather around me here! I have no affiliation with the company, merely a fan and purchaser of their kit!

Never knew these type of jackets were so expensive. Get down to M&S for a Blue Harbour special.
I have had a few….
Barbour, Belstaff not quite what they were imho
I use a Filson tin cloth one that I got off sport pursuit or parasol ( can’t remember which) and it’s really good.
Best find off all has been off eBay.-a green. 3/4 length German “polizei ” issue coat looks a little “official” but it’s easily the best specced coat I’ve ever seen, best bit is it’s cost me £40 and was brand new- pack away hood, removable fleece liner, goretex membrane and windproof/waterproof ….if you don’t mind the looks I doubt you’ll buy better……https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162671191629

Hipster but this looks decent. Probably won’t be cheap either.

Slight thread revival
Been looking into a field jacket and or a wax type jacket for the winter
Naturally did a forum search first, lots of decent suggestions
I ordered this jacket and arrived today:
https://forcesuniformandkit.co.uk/co...ore-tex-jacket
Great price, especially for Goretex but the jacket didn’t particularly suit me so sent it back. It’s more of a over jacket on me and really wanted a fitted type.
I’ve now gone for a Frahm Ventile thermal field jacket: https://frahmjacket.com/collections/...l-field-jacket to see what the fuss is about. Not cheap but hopefully it’s a keeper.
I’ve also ordered a Peregrine Bexley wax jacket https://www.peregrineclothing.co.uk/...our=Black#info looks good and see if it fits ok.
Other jackets I have been looking at:

Tried a few wax Barbour’s on at John Lewis and they don’t seem to look right on me lol.
More suggestions welcome!

Look at the triple aught design m65, or hebtroco has a nice looking one.

I really fancy trying one of these but perhaps not at RRP. The price of this pre-owned is about the most I’d pay. They did have a really nice grey one for around £400 a while back.

I didn't update the thread way back then.
The Alpha was so thin as to be utterly useless.
I eventually found this:
https://www.andsons.co.uk/collection...us-army-jacket
The &Sons patch velcros off for the stealth look.
It's medium thickness/weight and regular fit. I found it perfect for autumn/spring but it's been too mild lately to wear it.
I have quite a few jackets, light and heavy duty but I would say my best is a North Coast from M&S, pockets where you need them, comfortable, decent looks, warm, waterproof, tough, for me perfect.

For gentlemen I think. Lovely winter wear, mostly still available.
Paramo make some great field jackets, my Halcon jacket is still going strong after 4 years of proper use.

I too have been looking for a new jacket.
The Belstaff Techmaster looks good.
Does anybody have one.
ARKTIS and Fortis make good kit.

So the Frahm Ventile Thermal jacket arrived today at 8am by DPD. Awesome service!
Presentation was awesome, although for the price I’d expect it to be
Jacket it’s great quality, good fit and great colour (navy blue), the zipper and poppers are very high quality and a joy to use. Plenty of pockets inside and outside.
As great as it is, I am going to send it back and it’s little overkill for my needs, reading the spec sheet:
Take this literally!Use in cold to sub zero weather, in high winds, snow or heavy rain. With a single layer the temperature range is 0c to +12c, or down to -6c with mid-layers
I tried with a t shirt and was roasting. Upon reflection I’ve now ordered the none thermal variant which I hope will be what I want: https://frahmjacket.com/products/ori...y-field-jacket
Anyway some pics:
Will report back!
The Peregrine Bexley looks great! Is it quite fitted when worn?
Hi, yeh its pretty decently fitted, im a 42" chest and i think i can get away with a thin jumper underneath it, but really purchased for work so wear over a shirt.
I bought from Country Attire, with 10% code (AW10) for £185 next day delivery.
https://www.countryattire.com/peregr...l?colour=Black
the stock images make it look like its a shiny jacket, but its matt in real life.
