Quick question for our resident electricians please…
Standard recessed ceiling spotlight in the hall…..works when you switch it on but when you switch it off at the wall the bulb flashes on and off/strobes.
One gang switch.
No separate transformer ie single unit.
Obviously somethings not right but what? Could it be as simple as saying the unit is buggered?
Could be as simple as a loose wire in the wall switch ... hall wall switches can be subject to vibration eg from doors closing and street noise which can gradually loosen a screw securing a wire contact ... thus causing intermittent only connection. Simple matter to remove the wall switch plate for a visual wiring check. I had the problem last year ... removed the wall plate and saw the loose wire ... remedied by turning off the lighting circuit and tightening the wire securing screw.
"Well they would say that ... wouldn't they!"
Yes had similar with my kitchen lights and it was down to a loose wire

Is it led?
Is it MR16 or Gu10
That’s a big bulb for a recessed unit.
Don’t suppose it’s a ‘smart’ led bulb? They can flash if they think they’re being reset.
Loose wire at the switch or the lamp, the lamp more often, as it goes through many heat cycles.
Isolate the supply before opening up anything, a loose wire can jump out of the terminal and get you.
Assuming you have tried a known good blub in there and get the same issue, I'd guess its likely to be a loose connection in the switch.
Probably the negative and it might be a bit burnt out.
Obviously get the power off before you start investigating!

Have you tried switching it off and on again.
Try giving it a tap with a hammer. Percussive maintenance usually works.
Always my first two actions in all situations!
Its a old unit….there are a couple and could do with replacing anyway. And yes it’s a big bulb and not led!
I left the switch in the off position and partially unscrewed the bulb to stop the strobing last night. Strangely this morning when I screwed it back in there was no strobing and it’s working correctly. It’s not the bulb as I’ve tried it with others.
As it happens we are getting an en-suite done at the moment and the blokes ‘leccy is in today for that so he will have a squizz at it.
