The Peanut Butter Falcon
We are finding it hard to get to the Goldilocks zone when it comes to movies. Last night “they” suggested The Notebook ! FML and stab in the eyeballs !
We ended up watching A Place Beyond The Pines. Surprisingly my wife enjoyed it, as did I (tremendous film). Middle daughter was struggling with it in places (it’s a bit mature). First born passed out on me and the Gretel (I call her that cos she leaves a trail of evidence wherever she goes - she did a 🥷 💣 💨 )
I know there are a tonne of movies out there but I’m looking for suggestions on films that take the audience on a journey.
Any recommendations

And in a similar vein, Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Mid teens is a good age for films, you resign yourself to the fact they have heard and know all the smutty stuff by now so you can watch classic 80's cheese, guns and violence films like me and my son did last night with a big bowl of chilli - 1987 RoboCop I'll buy that for a dollar
Field of Dreams is great Sunday Afternoon viewing.

How old are your kids? Mine are 8 (soon to be 9) and 13 so we have to consider a reasonably big age range when deciding on films.
Little Miss Sunshine (15), some mature elements

Clockwork Orange.
Or “Cloud Atlas” …Tom Hanks…it went under the radar but if you want a ‘journey’ it might suit…

How about Amadeus? It's a great movie, dark at times, which may suit their taste.
When I was 12 my two favourites were Escape from New York and The Thing
You’re welcome 😆
Cruella was a pleasant surprise

We also all enjoyed Knives Out

That’s my 1st thought - watched this with my ‘kids’ ((28 and 24) we all loved it
Both my girls have grown up ‘sharing’ movies with me - something I absolutely cherish- although they have their own houses and lives now we still share evenings sharing a film - old or new it doesn’t matter- it’s something you’ll share forever
They sound like the perfect age to introduce them to John Hughes!!
Start with Weird Science, then Ferris, Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, Breakfast Club... intersperse with the lighter ones he was involved in like Planes Trains, National Lampoon's and Uncle Buck.. just in time for one of the best Xmas films of the year, Home Alone.
My kids are younger so I envy the above choices!!!

Lost boys, goonies, gremlins, too young for American wearwolf in London? Think I saw that at about 10 or 11, maybe a bit too much gore n sex? Batteries not included, cocoon, flight of the navigator, Indiana Jones, bond,

Anything with John Candy is fun at that agr

Also - though hard going and v long for some the Lord of the Rings films will literally fill hours and hours
A bit soft fantasy I’d class it as - a prequel is being released before Xmas I believe

Maybe a bit young for them but I remember my late Dad enjoying Harry and the Henderson’s with his grandson, great memories..
The Princess bride, flight of the navigator, back to the future trilogy, Ghostbusters, mighty ducks, marvel (all of them), star wars (all of them), my cousin Vinnie, blind side
Should keep you busy
The River Wild
Twins
The Insider - Michael Mann with Al Pacino and Russell Crowe. It's about a whistle blower at big tobacco. No guns, shooting or explosions but gripping.
Last of the Mohicans
Nearly everything from Disney+
Also, Love and Monsters, Nightbooks and both Zombiland films.
I’m in the similar situation with my two oldest boys (10 and 13) and with a recent full home cinema install we’ve been making our way through some great films:
- All the marvel films
- Matrix trilogy
- Hobbit trilogy
- Lord of the Rings trilogy
- Batman Dark Night trilogy
- All Jumanji films
- Jurassic Park films
- All Fast and Furious films
- Top Gun
- Oblivion
- All Mission Impossible films
- Hunger Games trilogy
- Coda (Apple TV)
- Inception
- All recent Star Trek films
- All Star War films
- Alita: Battle Angel
I’m sure there loads more but this is all I can think of off the top of my head.
There’s quite a good App called Friendspire that helps with film recommendations based on what you like. Might be worth a try.

Two Aussie classics which are maybe not so well known:
Storm Boy - for kids perhaps a minimum 8-10yo, it can still dig deep into my emotions today in middle age. Adore this film for the story, charactersy and stunning landscapes
Chopper - for kids perhaps 13yo at least, fantastic film. I love the psychology behind the main character Mark 'Chopper Read, and the superb acting by Eric Bana. This was his breakthrough film and is based on a true story
Stardust was a family favourite when the kids were younger.
Ferris Bueller is getting screen time tonight. The 12 year olds and me ! 🍿
Yesterday was a good film for a diverse audience. As above; my 12 year old loved peanut butter falcon, amazing film.
Paddington 1 and 2 are both brilliant for all ages.
Also just watches Sherlock Holmes as a family and we all enjoyed it (Robert Downey Jnr one)
Time Bandits & Big Trouble in Little China went down well with mine.....
Oblivion, Edge of tomorrow, Super 8 and Ready Player 1, The Man from Uncle are good for Family viewing. So we’re the 2 modern Star Trek movies and Rogue 1 and Solo. The Lego movies have been really good as well, and the kids really enjoyed Detective Picachu. Kubo and the 2 strings and Big Hero 6, Up and the Iron Giant were all excellent. We watched the Peanut Butter Falcon last night and loved it. The hunt for the wilder people is a favorite as well.
Mine are 14 and 12 and I’ve introduced them to some of the classics from my youth which they loved
Aliens, Commando, T2, Predator, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and the Return of the Pink Panther.
We saw Free guy recently and loved it, and once upon a dead pool was brilliant.
The Princess Bride - there's not a child, teenager or grownup yet born who hasn't loved this.
So clever my foot fell off.
Fly Away Home (Jeff Daniels)………
Great for kids.
Another vote for Ready Player One. Also, Ender's game is great.
