agree 100%
I'm sure it has been mentioned before, but there are a couple of very suspect CWC G10's on the bay at the moment. Beware of markings 0552/6644-86 etc.

agree 100%
What are the signs for spoting a fake (in addition to the above mentioned serial number)?

Those numbers aren't the serial number.Originally Posted by hogthrob
The 0552 is the code for the Royal Navy (0555 Royal Marines, W10 Army and 6B or 6BB RAF)
6645 is part of the NSN; the NATO Supply Classification (NSC) identifier for timekeeping instruments, 6644 is not a valid NSC.
99 is also part of the NSN; it is the code for the first country to codify the item (see below,) note not all of these countries belong to NATO), 86 is not a valid code.
On CWC and Hamilton watches, the above line would be followed by the remaining seven digits of the NSN, then another line with the serial number/two digit year (in the quartz, the pheon points at the crown, in the mechanicals, it is between the second and third line):
W10-6645-99
523-8290
4349/79
Sometimes some of this information is ommitted, particularly in the fat case CWC quartz watches (note the location of the pheon):
6645-99
541-7362
(pheon)
317/80

26 Portugal
27 Turkey
28 Luxembourg
29 Argentina
30 Japan
31 Israel
32 Singapore
66 Australia
98 New Zealand
99 United Kingdom
EDIT: All this only applies to British watches after the adoption of the NSN stock numbering system, and other watch manufacturer's may stamp the information differently, but the codes will be the same.
Some variaations:
(These two have just the last seven digits of the NSN)

Thank you for the info ...
if only I knew what a pheon was
A pheon is the arrow / crows foot marking. /|\Originally Posted by Tim Coronel

Wow! what a collection!!!
I'm really interested in finding a royal navy issued watch from 1992 if you have one at all? it was the year i joined the RN so would be lovely to find one! I actually had one given to me whilst i was serving, by a mate who was a RN Diver. it broke so i threw it in the bin I still kick myself for doing something so stupid!
Floyd,
Was it a CWC Quartz diver or CWC G10 that you threw in the bin? This is the only choice for 1992 I think. A 0552 1992 issued PVD CWC Quartz diver (SBS issue) sold on e..y recently. Good luck with the hunt and be sure to show us your find if successful.
Terry
Hi Terry, it was a 90's G10 that i threw away. At the time, it was a simple job of popping down to stores and requesting another one so from that perspective, they were always treated as 'throw away'. crazy really! wish i'd have kept it but looking back, i've thrown all sorts in the bin without really bothering, a raymond weil being one such item :S
If i find my '92 G10, i'll be sure to post pics, you can be sure of that.
out of all those case backs not a single 92 !!!
Contender for the longest thread resurrection ever, but I was searching google and stumbled on this.
This appeared on e-bay tonight
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/114980070...cAAOSwD75hOjZ2
The NSN looks completely wrong, hence my search.
Avoid.
Now reported to e-bay as a fake.

That does not look good with closer inspection but it might pass at a glance, scary
Wow, I had no idea these things got faked! Hard to imagine the financial angle being worthwhile.
Sadly the fakes are getting better and will continue to do so.
The earlier Hamilton W10 / 6BBs have been faked for a while.
The key is also the NSN and issue date on them - the hands are usually wrong as well.
I guess if the sale price is higher than the cost of manufacturing it’s worth while.
I must admit, I’ve taken a fresh look at the dial and hands on the fake and they are wrong. Here is a genuine 1980 GS watch (Fatboy).
Imagine taking a ruler and drawing a line under the bottom of the 11 and 1 numbers and that would be the exact top of the CWC logo. Look at the positioning of the logo on the fake, it is higher.
Also the minute and second hand are not long enough, they only just reach the inside of the minute track instead of the outside of it like on the original. The crown doesn’t look right either.
All in all, it’s a bit of a dogs dinner, but at least we got it pulled from e-bay.
