I remember when sticking a sidewinder with L plates on any bike legally transformed it into a Trike and you could ride a 1000cc bike on a provisional license, to make matters worse the sidewinder made the bike an absolute death trap, I remember people running a bungee cord to lift the wheel up so it was never in contact with the ground when riding upright.

Amazing this many of us survived the 80's really.
I started with a Garelli Tiger Cross, Greaves 250 super sport, Suzuki GT250(not ram air)
    Then Suzuki GS1000S and a BMW R100RS
My mate (R.I.P) Pete Key. Had a moped, passed his bike test. Got a Norton & wrote it off, got a Kawasaki 750 wrote it off. Then can’t remember what he had but he wrote that off coming into to Sheffield from Derbyshire at horrible speed, went into Gilders Car Showroom writing off the showroom window, cars, his bike and himself.
    He never learnt. Sad.

I'm sure we've all got stories about bikers who really shouldn't have been and every Biker I know without exception has friends who aren't with us any more. Knowing your limitations is part of being a good rider. Any sports bike is more capable than the rider in most cases. For me the other road users are more of a problem than the bikers.

I think that not starting at the end of your teens - is the answer……….

Don’t mix motorcycles with the teenage feeling of invincibility.

Going to look at this as a replacement for my 749s...Long drive from Bristol to Doncaster on Sunday but having spoken with the current owner he feels it will be worthwhile..

Looks rather lovely in the advert.

    Ohlins disks?

Thanks, yes I think so too. Ohlins forks, and rear shock..Not sure if the discs are OEM or aftermarket. The chap selling it is fairly mature (60) and has owned it for 10 years. The MOT history all stacks up and he's got a huge file of paperwork to go with it too.

He's had a Power Commander fitted and stuck it on a rolling road to have it set up for better low to midrange torque which suits my style of riding down to the ground...

The seller reckons it's wanted for nothing in the 10 years he's had it (2nd owner) and speaking to him I get a good feeling hence the 7 hour round trip on Sunday..

Thanks Matt. The insurance company £'s have hit my account and I've been considering several alternatives. Bang for your buck this is too good not to consider, and I think it looks superb.

I mention the disks as it says Ohlins disks in the ad but I didn't think Ohlins made disks

Whatever, it does look rather splendid.

    Those are phenomenal open-road bikes.

(your neighbours will appreciate it if you leave for a run - mid-morning at the earliest)

Yes, just seen that now...don't think they do (or did) so maybe a typo? I'll have a good look on Sunday but I do get a good feeling when talking to the owner that it's been really well looked after.

Yes, I think for me and my riding preference this has more than enough performance that I'll ever need. Very few if any electronic aids/modes etc so maintenance and servicing should be reasonable too (for an Italian super bike).

I'm 6' 4" and think I'll fit this quite well as it's quite a large bike.

What happened re the 1098 that ground rush has for sale?

Whilst the Aprilia is a lovely bike, I think you’ll end up regretting not buying the Duke!

I’ve recently sold my older RSV in favour of an XJR1300.

Loved my Aprilia (the company and dealerships less so)
Fantastic bikes if you're the 'hands on' type.
If not...good luck, not many decent dealerships tbh.
Unquestionably the best repairs & servicing in the UK is Griff Wooley at Aprilia Performance. 10/10
    Superb on line forums/advice/knowledge/resources available.

I went with a few like-minded DOCGB members to visit the Ogri exhibition. Such a talented illustrator Paul Sample is - much of his material is remarkably topical even decades after he started the cartoon strip.

Followed by the obligatory brew and butty at a nearby favourite stop:

Thanks for all the help and recommendations with the flying brick. It has helped me narrow it down. Steptoe has been a great help also! Fingers crossed she's back on the road again soon.

I recognise that cafe but had no clue about the Ogri exhibition. Thanks for the heads up, I’ll be heading down to Robertsbridge pretty soon.

To be honest Dave, I just fancied a bit of a change. I still have another Duke in the garage and having had a 748, a Pantah and the recent 749, thought I'd try something different, albeit another Italian V Twin. Dave's 1098 listed on SC is a lovely bike, but to be honest, probably a bit too much for me and the riding I do. That's why I like the 749 so much as it was quick enough without frightening me to death.

The RSV whilst still a fast bike retains the engine characteristics I like..apparently it's quite a lazy, torque friendly motor. There's also a considerable cost difference which appealed to my wife, of around £3k and for a bike that would only get minimal use during 6 -7 months of the year, spending anymore didn't really make sense.

I'm seeing the bike on Saturday so may make a decision over the weekend.

I've realised that I've had BMW, Triumph, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Harley Davidson, BSA & Peugeot motorcycles, but nothing from Italy or Austria. I will have to remedy that at some point.

I think the 1098 is a more 'lithe' bike, but the Mille is still a very satisfying bike for a weekend blast or overnighter.

Both fall into the category of "when you park it up and walk away......... you look back over your shoulder"

At the money - it would seem to be a good choice!

Like car drivers and Alfa’s, every “biker” needs to have experienced something Italian.

Mine came with a sticker on the battery stating “when starting in cold weather it will necessary to warm the battery before starting...”

It doesn’t even click if it’s below 5°C...

My RSV was much more temperamental than I remember either of my Ducatis being; if it didn’t start after a couple of seconds, it would flatten the battery and not even turn over.

    Hahahaaa......yep.
Zero throttle required on the GenI's...just a little choke.
    Battery needs to be 100%
Get it wrong too often and it's spragaggedon.

As much as it's an expensive hassle, having a tiered licencing system does seem like a sensible thing to do.
Did the same, Tiger Cub then 250 Honda k4. Bike test with examiner walking around the block (and jumping out from behind a tree for the emergency stop, I knew he was there and eased off the brakes to pretend I was surprised) Then Z650 and Z1 here we come.

Didn't worry me at the time but scares the hell out of me when I think back how easy it was. I think taking an RAC/ACU course when I got the Z650 probably saved a lot of trouble. The instructor was a police motorcyclist, and he showed how safe could be fast.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

I've had 2 RSV Factories, great bikes. My mate also had one that was always very low mileage, every time you disconnected the battery the mileage reset to zero, a known fault on some of them

Yes, I was made aware of this and have checked the MOT history on-line and have seen a lot of service paperwork too. I did look at another one that was being sold by a dealer in Newcastle where the mileage had gone backwards a couple of times....I gave that one a miss.

I've also spoken to AP Workshops, an Aprilia specialist in Tamworth. They gave me a lot of advice for things to look at and also ask the owner..this includes getting the engine number which can help to determine if it will have a well know issue with the stator which can cost £1k to fix...again the bike I'm looking at is fine.

I`ve got my mates Buell Ulysses here at the moment after i fixed a problem on it.
I took it on my local byway today to continue with the `testing`.

    Adventure/off road bike? My arse!

Just prior to taking these pics on the gravelly bit there was a deeply-rutted section full of slippery mud and gloopy water that the 4x4`s had churned up and piloting a near-200kg motorbicycle with lumpy engine power delivery, on/off clutch action, road tyres and a seat height way too high for my stumpy little legs made for a rather nervous couple of minutes riding. Eric Buells oft-touted `mass centralisation`did not seem to help, and it`s no wonder Ewan and Charlie were often picking dropped bikes up every 100 yards on their little offroad adventures if this is anything like a fully-loaded GSA...

It does however make a most excellent road bike, the grunt, torque, effortless speed/accelleration aided by huge globs of V-twin thump (...and a rather fruity exhaust note) are addictive.

Immediately after getting back home i took my DR800 for a little spin to compare.
It was WEIRD, and felt like a 125.....

Going through a pile of old hard drives to get everything I want off of them before I clear and recycle them.

To make the most of the scorching summer sunshine, a group of us took our Harley Sportsters to John O'Groats for the Summer Solstice (2004)

    Race-prepared GSXR-1000, very un-race prepared rider, Donington Park (2005)

First trip out with the boy on 2-wheels (2006)

    More bike related stuff

I met up with a few mates yesterday for a long awaited Tour Of Duty to North Wales. There were 2 Street Triples, incl mine, 2 Duc V4 Streetfighters, a V4 Tuono Factory and a plethora of Multistradas out. Left Warrington around 9.45 ish and stopped at Rhug estate bike stop for a brew n burger. Then a run into Barmouth. Stopped for a cheeky Ice Cream on the front, along with a stretch and relax. It was busy as can be expected given the weather. Homeward bound via Blaneau and Betwys. If you can resist the temptation to exercise your right wrist on the A470 road between Blaneau and Betwys, then its time to give up your bike. SIMPLES. That stretch of road has quite simply been designed by the Biking Gods with one thing in mind. Quick stop at Betwys for refreshments, where we saw an amazing Arial Atom, basically a ridiculously fast street legal go kart, it was awesome. back home for 5, and a few drinks with the kids. Top weather, super bikes, brilliant tarmac and fantastic company. If there has ever been a better day, well, someone has hid it very well cos I aint never seen it !!

Stuart great ride report and I bet you went past my front door, I also have family in and around Blaenau / Portmadog so great roads.

. Re the Ariel I did a trackday in one 4 years ago. At the end of the session you could pay a further £15 to be a passenger in one of two supercharged Ariel Atoms dog fighting around the track. The acceleration even by bike standards was brutal :)

Hey Steve, I regret not taking more pics of that Atom tbh. It was covered in trick bits and carbon, they are trick as hell anyway but this was another level. I’d hate to think what that rear wing must have cost. Yeah, Blaneau area has some really top biking roads, not just biking, the scenery and backdrops are to die for. We’ll give you a knock next time we’re passing, brews on Steve guys

First ride out this evening on the Bonnie that I picked up last week. Last of the carb’d models, behaved impeccably well.
The wife reliably informs me that it is far more comfortable on her rear compared to the pillion pad on my Speedmaster... so I guess that’s the Speedmaster only going to be on solo duties from now on !!

I’ve got a set of TORS heading my way for the Bonnie, the previous owner fitted brand new pipes just 300 miles ago but it’s just far too quiet for my liking.
    Gratuitous pics as follows

Looks like the mountain road from Rhayader to Devils bridge?

I went over there a couple of weeks ago. It’s always a good journey.

Here’s a picture taken by my mate. He’s not quite grasped the whole depth of field thing…

I've been over that way a few times but never that route. Loads of bikes out today, all (almost all) were cruising in a chilled manner and enjoying the sunshine.

The only one going properly quickly was a woman that passed us on an S1000RR. Tight leathers, blonde hair flowing from the back of her helmet. I tried my hardest to keep up...

Can't quite make out the model - is it the supercharged HP (not even sure of that model).

Supposed to be well-refined, much more than one might suspect.
