    Manufacturers volumes

Just came across this, amazing stats to read
    https://wp-aws-media.s3-accelerate.a...ley-2020-8.jpg

104,000 Hamilton watches made in 2020 compared to 1,500,000 Longines...
Cartier, third largest Swiss watchmaker in £!

    And loads more

Interesting find. If I'm correct the implied retail value less the implied wholesale value, would give implied markup?

Interesting that Swatch sold 3.1m (as in the brand, not the group). I know it's cheap and cheerful, but I don't see that many in the wild!

Also 230k Tudor units versus 500k Omega units. If I was feeling petty I'd go dig up that last Tudor vs Omega options thread and point this out to the folk who insist nobody has heard of Tudor outside of watch forums...

Those Richard Mille numbers. How? More turnover than Tissot.

They clearly don't yet have the mindshare of Omega but they are very much in non-WIS minds when looking for watches.
The fact that they are pretty easy on the eye overall and seen as 'fairly' priced just helps drive the market share.
Edit: I suspect TAG have more to worry about from them than Omega though. Closer in both volume & average value.

Good point. In my mind, they don't really compete but they clearly do from a public perception.
Also noticed how few watches Oris actually sells. They're tiny.

In volume terms Casio is the worlds largest watch manufacturer, if you ignore Apple, It overtook Citizen three or four years ago.

Surprised Oris is only 35k in sales. Price point and availability made me think they'd be well over 100k.

This is for Swiss watches, I would be curious to compare with the Asian manufacturers

Many will know, but just in case, the Federation of the Swiss watch industry FH produces monthly reports on output for the Swiss watchmakers. These are quite detailed, you can see quartz vs mechanical, units vs revenue for steel vs "precious metal", regional trends and so on. Figures are in Swiss Francs to avoid currency fluctuations but "export value" rather than (often discounted) retail price is used, and it is not broken down by brands.

    Still, a lot there: https://www.fhs.swiss/eng/statistics.html

Re Tudor comments: remember the brand never went away in Asia, which remains the biggest market (larger than the US, EU and UK combined) for Swiss watches.

    edit: Japanese data https://www.jcwa.or.jp/en/data/industry/index.html

Yeah, I always saw them as close competitors to Longines, but clearly not on price or volume based on this. Much closer to Rado price wise and near neither in volume.

    I'd agree.

It must also be a much easier sell for the Jewellers to say "It's made by Rolex with a Rolex movement" than try and sell a TAG at the same price point.

They certainly seem to be quite prevalent in the shopping centre jewellers these days, alongside TAGs and Longines.
