Hi All,
Having wrestled with my conscience (and won!) recently, I kept my Blancpain Flyback (phew!) and very much enjoyed wearing it on a recent US business trip (though of course the bracelet has picked up a couple of marks now, but...never mind  )
Anyway, am now looking for a daily beater. Plan to spend around £4-500. Might be interested in something a bit vintage (if such a thing exists!), pref. a dive watch or something with 100-300m water resistance, and not too large (I have skinny "athletic" wrists  ) - no bigger than 42mm tops. Quartz or auto considered - any thoughts on what I should look for?
Thanks,
Duncan

I have a Marathon GSAR on the bracelet as my beater - looks good, not too large and takes the knocks.

Find yourself a well kept, all original, Seiko 6309-7040/9.
Rugged to boot, good sized but surprisingly light and flat on the wrist and you can electrify it with a 7548 quartz movement if you prefer it to be a "grab and go" piece instead of auto.
You can dress it up with a sapphire crystal and relume though these are easily found, so I very strongly advise against touching up a all original 6309-704/9 as they are getting rare
Depends whether you're looking at new or second-hand?
Anyway:
Longines Hydro-Conquest;
PR-17c?
Oris TT1?
Beater? That must be a Monster. Or two: one black and one orange (for one of those days). ;)
i've a t-touch as a beater, i'm a engineer so it gets bashed about and TBh it's never skipped a beat

Have a look at some of the offerings from Sinn, I am currently using a 656 on a nato as a daily beater, very easy to read and running a -1 sec a day. A lovely looking very subtle design.
Would Eddie's PRS-50 be too big? It seems to have quiet a lot of what your looking for.Originally Posted by dunky dares

Marathon TSAR is not too big and an easy grab 'n go because of the quartz.
Another vote for the Monster here!

Ignorance breeds Fear. Fear breeds Hatred. Hatred breeds Ignorance. Break the chain.
The PRS-18Q with its 300 metre resistance, decent lume and general toughness fits this bill too. Ten year battery life. As near as I'll ever get to a Dreadnought.
Love the crown on that :)Originally Posted by Seamus

Marathon SAR-D,
Tutima DI300,

PRS18q, you can't go wrong with it.
Me too! In fact I like the whole thing!Originally Posted by Seamus
How much do they go for?
This is my new beater - it's an M-16 Type 2 from West Coast Time and I'm really pleased with it:
^ looks good. I will always use a seiko as my daily beater.
I have trouble understanding why people buy great watches, and then decide they can't wear them? What is wrong with wearing your Blancpain for everything?
There's one on SC for about £250 I think. I've got a regular SAR auto and it's very good, should be fine for your wrist size as well (although they do wear a touch tall).Originally Posted by Orange Peel

I would go for a basic Sinn, I think the model number is 356. Or a Fortis Flieger.
Black Monster gets my vote
What about a hamilton?
I use a Khaki ETO (Quartz) as my daily beater.
Its the only Quartz i own but like the convinience for day to day wear.
as to why i dont wear my "nicer" watches every day: It just feels more special to put them on when going out/to a big meeting. I am like this with most stuff, cloths etc.... but with watches i have the added incentive that 1 day i would like to pass them down and preferably in a state where they are recognizable!!!
Got to be a Marcello C Tridente
I have a Seiko Samurai as my daily beater and it's great. Really nicely made, and takes knocks brilliantly.
I like the look of the Marathon's too.
My daily beater is a quartz Omega Seamaster [Bond].
Never missed a beat in the 9 years i have it [aside from a battery change] - super reliable and looks great.
If u can get a good 2nd hand version, do it.
Thanks for all your suggestions. I think I like the Hamiltons best. Now which to choose... :?:

Swiss Army Dive Master 500 M
Seiko Sumo, 007, Samurai, or the Monster.
Citizen PMT56-2713. This one is the Eco-Drive, titanium, perpetual calender model. It's been my daily for awhile and it still looks new thanks to the Duratec treatment.
