Jimi, All Along The Watchtower. (Solo starts at 1:40)
That chuka - chuka he does at 2:40 still makes my hair stand up even after all these years.
I’m sure there are many, many guitar solos that could have a crack at that title, but this one properly makes my hair stand on end. Apparently improvised on the spot, first take.

Got to agree with Neil, All along the watchtower.
I saw Bob Dylan in 1996 and he announced that he only does the Jimi version now, he prefers it to his original.

Some great suggestions
I think Gary is so underrated

I think TFB posted a Prince solo on a previous thread. That's the pinnacle for me. I'll try and find the thread.
second submission - in fact if finger style guitar is included, I'd say Kotaro Oshio for sure.
This guy is truly unbelievable (give it a watch if you have a few spare minutes, you won't regret it).

Domination live in Moscow is pretty epic. The solos, the breakdown, that crowd!

The Only Ones - Another Girl, Another Planet
I went to school with Guthrie... he was three or so years above me and one the reasons I started playing guitar.
Every year the school would have a house music competition and I still remember seeing him and his brother, Seth, up on stage playing a Hendrix tune - forget which, Purple Haze maybe. As a 14/15 year old I thought that was cool af. Got a guitar and amp for my next birthday and 30 years later I'm still nowhere near as good now as he was aged 17.
As for the best guitar solo, goodness knows... but I've always had a soft spot for Kid by the Pretenders... sinks beautifully into the song, has a wonderful lyrical feel to it.. nowhere near as flash or complicated as most but really adds to the song. 14 seconds of perfection! The solo starts at about 1.30 but you should really listen to the whole song.
To be honest, i'm not a big fan of twiddly solos, and certainly not of this band, but this one always makes me laugh and they are talented guys

Not sure there's a single answer to this :-)
Some of my favourites:
Steve Vai's For The Love Of God is very good https://youtu.be/NiTXGswyAls
Fredrik Akesson in Cusp Of Eternity by Opeth is jaw dropping https://youtu.be/JHq9yMXw3iA?t=202
Joe Bonamassa in The Great Divide by Black Country Communion is a satisfyingly complete composition https://youtu.be/ocgO6iSiU3g?t=224
Ritchie Blackmore briefly popped up after years of medieval obscurity to give this solo in Rainbow Blues by Blackmore's Night https://youtu.be/_zoMGD3XOhM?t=145
...and of course you can never leave Larry Carlton's solo in Kid Charlemange by Steely Dan out of these discussions https://youtu.be/jJ9Xk-VoGqo?t=132
ZZ Top - Cheap Sunglasses
David Bowie - Moonage Daydream
My vote for the greatest "not a guitar" solo: The Specials and A Message To You Rudy https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=89&v...ature=youtu.be
Very difficult to define the best ever.
But Comfortably Numb from the Pulse concert gets me every time. Amazing that the live version is even better than the studio one!
The great Frank Zappa Watermelon In Easter Hay.

Yep, on the same night that England played Germany in the semis of Euro 96. Spent most of the night in the bar watching the match as I recall.
Watching Bob Dylan was hard work, but worth it at a fairly small venue to be able to tick off another legend from the list of those you need to see.
Hard question, it's maybe not the racing or technical solo, but fits this song and adding even more emotions:

Some have already mentioned Comfortably Numb but I feel the live version in Gdansk complete with THE black strat takes some beating, sit back with a whisky and enjoy!
As a metal fan I love this combination of guitarists on the 1986 charity song Stars by Hear N Aid, just skip to 2.25 for the start of duelling axes!

Difficult to answer over the decades, but I particularly like this guitarist on this fairly MOR video of the old members of the Little River band, purely for the melodic musicality of the solo, starting from 5mins into the video.

Strongly suspect the winner probably involves Dave Gilmour and a Pink Floyd track but I can’t really narrow it down to less than about 4!
Impossible to choose one - I've enjoyed all the suggestions so far.
Slightly left field perhaps, but Jan Akkerman is an amazing guitarist. This short track combines the wonderful 'Sylvia' with a touch of showmanship towards the end.

'Against stupidity, the gods themselves struggle in vain' - Schiller.
The first time I saw Steven Wilson he was touring this album, I got stuck in traffic and was late, as I finally settled into my seat this solo started and I was so relieved not to miss it. It's a great album although the theme makes it a difficult listen at times. Certainly this solo is up there for me
I'm loving his current album, totally different to anything else he has done so I expect it won't be universally popular...
Isaac Albeniz - Asturias.
The Polish guitarist Marcin Patrzalek plays it impressively- from 1.50 onwards if you want to get to the technical genius stuff.

Yep. That’s the one! Though there are dozens of Prince solo’s that could justifiably be up there.

Too many to choose from. Not exactly a guitar solo but if you're a Rush fan then this is quite special - extracts from many of their greatest hits. Alex Liefson is some guitarist.
Cliched and not trendy but genuinely for me Mark Knofler makes the best noise from a guitar I've heard.
Great suggestions! Love Jimi, SRV and all the other legends.
I was always a big fan of less notes with feel rather than million notes with perfect technique.
It’s impossible to pick one song, but I’ve always enjoyed how Malcom and Angus play “a solo” together at the end of this song... Malcolms sound with that Gretsch is absolutely gorgeous. And this is pretty much the only song where Malcolm plays “a solo”. Thinking they were like 18 and 20 years old recording that blows my mind.

TBH, it's impossible to choose the 'best'.
What I think today will likely change tomorrow.
Currently, my favourite is this live performance of Wilco's Impossible Germany with Nels Cline on guitar. Starts at about 2.40 -

Great, great band. Thanks for posting this. I’m off to dig out my headphones.

Hard to beat Leslie West in his prime in the 70's in my opinion. The live version of Nantucket Sleigh Ride from the Twin Peaks album, is amazing, as is Dream Sequence from Flowers of Evil. Sadly he died in 23rd December 2020 I believe.
