I have to concure, having just watched "The Gentleman" it is a class film and I will watch it again, Colin Farrel's character was particularly good.

It is - for lack of better words - BRUTAL.
Seen the DMZ? Also very good

Movies for the current times, very topical.

    Trailers linked.

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes - 82% Rotten Tomatoes, 7.6/10 IMDB

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes - 90% Rotten Tomatoes, 7.6/10 IMDB

War For The Planet Of The Apes - 82% Rotten Tomatoes, 7.6/10 IMDB

These are absolute hits. Science fiction, action, ethics, morality.

I'll look out for DMZ but in the meanwhile I would also highly recommend The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion

It's a bit slow on the first half and you wonder when it's going to get moving but believe when it does it explodes into action.

Part 2 is already due for release in 2021 and I for one will be hoping it's as good as the first one.

Yesterday I watched The Trial of the Chicago Seven , newly released on Netflix.
Excellent movie and a true story to boot about the aftermath of an uprising against the war in Vietnam by students and peaceniks.
Brilliant portrayals of some of the activists and the law enforcement side. Has to be seen to be believed as to the corruption going on at the time. The court scenes are superb.
Sacha Baron Cohen , Eddie Redmayne, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mark Rylance and even a small part by Micheal Keaton are really good performances .
One of the best films I’ve seen in a long time .

Knives Out with Daniel Craig, an entertaining romp that kept you guessing, Agatha Christie inspired.

Watched The Quick and the Dead yesterday.
Not normally a big Western fan, but was intrigued by the Hackman, Di Caprio and Crowe line up, not to mention Sharon Stone.
    All very young.
Quirky, but it kept me watching.

Without Googling, I think that's a Sam Raimi film, which explains the quirkiness!

Burden. Based on a true story.

Watched this drama about white trash racist turning his back on the KKK and it was a bit hard to watch in parts but very good.

    Well worth a watch.

Already mentioned many times before but I watched 1917 on Prime Video last night.

I found it quite an experience - visually very different from any film I've seen before and a great story.

I guess you know what you’re getting sort of but really? I’m no snowflake but it’s just verging on offensive fir the shock value ding you think?
I’m certainly glad and wouldn’t have paid at the cinema for it.

Seems to be quite a lot to look forward to other than that crap though on prime video

I really cant work out if I enjoyed 1917 or not.
It was very well filmed, the scenes were great, but it was a bit too 'Saving Private Ryan - rehashed' to properly be its own film.

Mixed feelings, but a decent watch still. It was just a shame they didn't move further away from the SPR theme.

Watched Borat 2 at the weekend and thought it was simply 'OK'. Highlights were babysitter and lovely Jewish lady, but a lot of the jokes landed flat for me personally.

Also watched Gamechangers at the weekend - now that was much better. Well made, engaging, and eye-opening. Well worth an hour and a half of your time. Although some of the science shared in the film is still debated, there is plenty there to get you thinking. If you enjoyed it, worth also seeking out the podcast James did with Joe Rogan afterward defending the film against scientific criticism (the pod is over 3 hours long!).

I watched 'Belle' last night and it's been a long time since I enjoyed a movie so much. Based on a true story set in late 18th century England and starring the gorgeous Gugu Mbatha-Raw and brilliant Tom Wilkinson.

To be fair that is SBC's modus operandi - As you say, you know what you're going to get.

Good to hear. We've got it recorded, but haven't watched it yet.

Her story came up on the recent Enslaved series, but I had heard it before.

    Many thanks for that link!
Haven’t seen that film since I was a nipper and often wondered why it never seems to be shown on TV. Some other crackers there too. As with all the streaming services though, finding the time to watch what’s in the watch list seems to elude me.

No apologies for a Sean Connery love-in over the weekend and 3 great quotes from the movies

The Untouchables. “They bring a knife, you bring a gun.....”

Indiana Jones and the last Crusade “It tells me that goose stepping morons.......”

The Rock “And this is not combat, it’s an act of lunacy......”

All great movies in their own popcorn-munching entertainment way and all on Sky Cinema!

Outland. A bit of, less well known Sean Connery, sci-fi action.

I also watched Chariots of Fire and Singing in the Rain this week, true classics.

One of my all-time favourite films. Gritty, realistic sci-fi. Gratuitous (but highly entertaining) 1980s practical effects notwithstanding. Very underrated, or just not-well-known film. Kinda surprised to find another fan in the wild!

Should probably watch it again. But the BBC obit mentioned that Sean Connery got his first lead role in a BBC film called Blood Money (co-starring Michael Caine). It actually sounds really good and I want to see it, but I don't know if it's available anywhere.

Zodiac is amazing, interesting how it predated the whole true crime boom of the 2010's.

I've most recently watched a few horror films, none of them great. Poltergeist is a classic but kind of a mess, Insidious was OK but showed it's minimal budget in parts, and The Autopsy of Jane Doe has interesting ideas for it's horror but doesn't really have enough about it for a whole film, even with a short run-time.

A long time ago, my best friend and I decided to rent every sci-fi film from our local video story. The staff got to know us and if something came in they thought we would like, they would keep a copy behind the counter. This was the same time period we watched Aliens around 12 times. We saw a lot of dross, but came across a few gems like Outland. I'd actually forgotten about it until last week.

The Cruel Sea for me tonight. Great stuff. Still pondering over his decision not to rescue the men in the water. Logically it was the right decision but a hell of a predicament.
