    Red arrows pilot watch

Saw this Reds pilot on Aircrew Interview wearing a big watch but I can't make out what type it is. Best guess is Breitling. Even zoomed in it's hard to see.

Almost certainly one of the newer Emergency models. Note the extra, larger ‘crown’ below the main crown.

    Plus, they’re F’ing huge.

Took a quick look at Breitlings site and the latest model of the black emergency retails at $18 695.

I do not see this team paying for their watches and imho, quite rightly so!

Got 3 mates in the Reds with the above pictured pilot being one of them, can confirm they def don’t pay for the watches, they are gifted for the duration of their tenure with the Reds.

I hope they don't fly with them on. Would unbalance the aircraft.

Once they have finished with the Reds do they get to keep them or do they have to give them back?

And I'm assuming they return to active service, I assume that they are issued a watch for their duties.

Happy to be corrected but doubt they are issued? More likely to be gifted by Breitling's PR Dept.

Correct they are nothing to do with the RAF.

This is what we are issued as aircrew.

Slightly off topic but Aircrew Interview is proving to be a most entertaining way to spend time!
Double off topic, @ditchvisitor, do you know where I can find a couple of yellow chinagraphs?
    Thanks

Pulsar are definitely at the budget end of the market, although I was impressed at how well my son's stood up to a fall from a moving bus! (Don't ask...)

Wow they are a blast from the past! Haven’t used them since basic flying training, will have a look in my locker when I get chance and see if I have any knocking about you can have.

Ha, they are big but surprisingly light. I rather like them, not brave enough to spend the cash but I might one day at the right price. The emergency 1 was my first brietling so have a soft spot for them, even though they are incredibly and daftly oversized.

Yes. I joined in ‘02 and when I went to stores they were just switching from CWC G-10 to Pulsar “G-10”. Pulsar was awful...the crystal was as soft as butter and there were numerous flight safety reports of crowns falling off in the cockpit.

I think his watch was at about 3ft 2in at launch, ground level on impact

In my time of service, we had the following available:

CWC G-10 and Pulsar G-10...available to pilots
Pulsar Chrono...available to navigators or if a friendly storeman would give you one as a pilot.

The CWC was much better than the Pulsar. My preference was the Gen 2 Seiko Chrono prior to those watches. A much nicer watch.

Although we all rushed to stores during elementary flying training ground school to get our free issued watch, I can remember only a couple of people actually wearing one later in my career once actually qualified.

I’d say the most ubiquitous pilot watch was the aerospace, usually sporting a set of wings on the dial.

Not strictly manufactured as a pilot watch, but I’d always thought about putting a Certina DS-1 on a nato...thought it had a very Seiko look to it.

    Example:

They do a Chrono version too.

Have you considered something from Seiko? Although not issued, SNDA27 looks very much like a military aircrew watch...

I doubt very much that they would pilot with such a large watch on their wrist. The way he is showing it off looks like a marketing excercise to me. I would imagine the RAF has much better means of locating downed pilots.

Of course, although I suspect he could wear it in the cockpit. Pilots are known to have very strong wrists and can handle wearing the Emergency.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Ideally I'd like to get a yellow pencil but if you have any spare yellow refills that'd be great.
