A fair few of us have more time on our hands at home now. For a bit of fun, and to raise some money for the Fundraiser, I thought we could see how many different species of birds we can spot in the next week. Anything you’ve seen in your garden, from your window or out on your daily exercise walk. Put those high end Swarovskis to use - no need for photos, if you claim a Purple Sandpiper we will believe you.
Post your entries in this thread and I’ll try to update the list in this post.
I’ll donate £1 for each different species spotted between 7am this morning and 7pm on Easter Sunday (12th April).

Adding Nuthatch and Bullfinch (pair) seen this morning.
Just saw a Red Kite out of the window, and been visited by a Muscovy duck this morning.
The latter must have escaped and gone ‘feral’!
The other things I’ve seen are already on the list.
Pheasant and red leg partridge on the South Downs this morning.
Saw a couple of seagulls wheeling over the house before.
Plenty of green parakeets,i kid you not..Does a herd of deer count as wildfowl?
May be on the lists but can’t spot one, Heron.
Green Woodpecker
Spotted Woodpecker

I live opposite a tiny nature reserve in Crystal Palace SE London and can see the last slither of it opposite my lounge window. 2 days ago there was a pair of copulating greater spotted woodpeckers, I heard them hammering early the next morning, yesterday I had a glimpse of a wren out the back window.
Despite being urban London there is a fair bit of woodland near me and the remains of the Great North Wood/Dulwich wood/Sydenham hill wood. In the summer I sometimes hear an owl late at night.
I’m not very good at identifying birds, but definitely in the back garden today:
Goldfinch
Robin
Jay
Magpie
Pigeon
Ring-necked Parakeet.
There must be loads more because the birdsong at the moment is fantastic.
Jackdaw
Coal Tit
Great Tit
Black Bird

In addition to many of those listed I can add Heron, Cormorant, (On the lakes), Kestrel, Grey Legged Partridge, Wren. We also have at least Barn Owl in the village, but I haven’t seen it this week.

I’ve been watching a flock of Fieldfares this week - I saw them again this morning.
Do you have those yet?

Plenty of Chiffchaffs out and about this morning.
I wish you hadn’t mentioned that.
It reminded me that I have a chiffchaff in one of the freezers - not to have as a very small roast, clearly, but to send to the taxidermist. It sadly flew into our kitchen window. Holding the chiffchaff in your hand you realise what tiny, fragile, but beautiful bids they are, with the flash of yellow above the eye.
It’s there alongside a green woodpecker and a barn owl, both victims of the busy A road nearby.
I have a Tawny Owl that I found in similar circumstances a few years ago. I had it stuffed by the great taxidermist Colin Dunton, and it now sits under a glass dome on our bookcase, watching over us.
Cool idea, really interested what people see.
From our garden and walks

Will add more if we see them. Some around here I haven’t seen for a while, like redwing, but will add those if we see them (they’ve probably headed north by now).

Sitting in the garden this morning, I don’t think I’ve ever heard so many birds (and we get quite a few). And a clear blue sky with not a contrail in sight.
We get quite a bit of traffic from Brize and Benson, which has suddenly become a lot more obvious without the incessant background noise from commercial air traffic.
The dawn chorus has certainly become much more audible, helped by the significant reduction in nearby road traffic.
My wife pointed out the lack of contrails to me the other day and which I hadn’t appreciated, which is odd given I normally spend so much time flying for work.
I am now at the point where withdrawal symptoms have kicked in, so I’m asking my wife to serve all my meals wrapped in tin foil and on a small tray. I have to use plastic cutlery. If I want to pretend I’m flying BA I’m forced to pay for it too!
From my dog walk can add
Skylark
Linnet
Gadwall
Barnacle Geese (feral flock)
