The live feed has started for what could be the greatest running achievement. The sub-2 hour marathon...
21 kph for two hours...

It's a ridiculous pace.
Love the technical planning aspect of it with the pace teams and formations and organisation.

Also following it. Agreed on the coordination...that is rather impressive.

I hope he achieves it. My best was 3 hour 15 mins, after going through 20 miles in 2 hours.
Thanks for the link I’m watching live as well.
My best time was also 3:15. One thing you don’t appreciate from the TV as they make it look so easy is just what an insane pace that is.
I really hope he does it. I watched the Nike documentary where he attempted it in Italy and only just missed out by 15 seconds.
I’m sure with all of the Ineos marginal gains stuff he will do it. Fingers crossed!!

It’s also live on Eurosport HD channel 410 if you have sky
A friend of mine ran 2.55 at the Berlin marathon a couple of years ago which blew my mind. Sub 2 is just crazy. Incredible effort
Thanks for posting. Just caught the last km!!
What an amazing run!
Rather cynical about this. It’s an unofficial record - if the official record is ever broken how will this be remembered?
Very impressive. About 4 n half minute mile pace all the way. Bet most of us on Tz couldn’t run 1 Mile that quick
Run the 100m in 17 seconds ... 422 times in a row
I couldn't run for a bus anymore. The only thing that runs now is my nose.
I remember school sports day
No one broke 5min for 1500m
I’m going for the record number of Marathons eaten in 2 hours.
Don't just do something, sit there. - TNH
What a fantastic achievement. Sadly the IAF has no intention of honouring this world-class achievement: too many helpers (41 'hares'). But never mind, he will go down in history as the first man faster than 2 hrs!
This picture with the helpers running in a 'reversed V formation' tells a lot. Eindhoven Tech University has its own wind tunnel and Jumbo-Visma Cycling holds the key to the complex, so to speak. For once Ineos and J-V teamed up. they'd figured out that running in this formation reduces 85% of the air resistance for the 'guy in the middle'.

Hard to see why this isn’t “official”, I mean, the guy ran it - he wasn’t carried! If it was all downhill I’d say ok, not official, but he just had pacers and good conditions. Pacers happen all the time on track events and it’s considered fine for record attempts
Plus a pace car shining lasers on the floor to indicate required pace, deliveries of water and energy gels instead of having to grab from a table etc.
I can see why it won't be recognised, but it doesn't take anything away from what an outstanding awesome achievement

That is amazingly impressive. The pace, and the maintenance of it over such a distance, is extraordinary!

I was doing the maths at what speed he had to maintain over 2 hours. I'd definitely have been able to keep up with him. For around 30 seconds.....

He did it. It is a record. However - specially designed route, pace, aero, gel/fluid intake all team organised and timed, rather than down to the competitor.
So... Most organisations have set requirements for records to stand in their events - simple as that.
I think it's incredible though.
I watched hailie gebreselassie go under 2:04 in Berlin - that was probably an even greater achievement to me - but I feel now that 2 mins has gone others will feel that it's achievable and push for it.
It's just a matter of time...
Fantastic achievement.
I couldn't get over how fresh he appeared just after finishing.
Cheers,
Adam.

Interestingly, when I used to run a lot (although not distance, only max 5k three times a week on the road) I was in the gym and put the treadmill up to hailie gebreselassie marathon pace - I think I managed about a mile and a half before having to stop, absolutely wrecked! It felt closer to a sprint than a paced run.
It's just a matter of time...
On another note...is it just me or the guy looks much older than 34!?

4 minute 34 seconds per mile pace. Very few people can run that for 1 mile (forget treadmills they’re really not accurate).
5k in 14 minutes?
10k in 28?
Half marathon in less than an hour?
2 minutes 17 seconds for 800 metres?
Find yourself a 400m running track and do 1 lap in 68.5 seconds. Then repeat 104 times.
I find that speed actually quite hard to get my head around.
Excellent post, thanks

fantastic achievement but to be fair its not really a genuine marathon , so i dont know maybe it should be a separate record of some sorts.
you cant compare what he ran compared to a marathon with 1000s of people and bumping and pushing , people blocking your way at the start and even that formation running would never happen in reality .
still an incredible achievement and an insanely fast pace at the very limits of human endurance, the man is incredible .
He did the London Marathon this year in 2.02.37. Still not too shabby...with all of the above in the mix. Phenomenal really!

Incredible feat. I don't think it matters if it isn't ratified; he still ran it but with nothing to slow him down, like racing or getting drinks. Unless you feel drafting helped, which I suppose it would a little, then he had no help to actually go faster.
Just read this elsewhere - if its true apparently only 5 out of 51 million park runs have been completed in a faster time than he did. Park run being 3 miles....
I would certainly look a lot older than my age if I did that for a living!!

He runs at pretty much twice my 5k/10k pace, but for a full marathon. I find that pretty boggling, frankly.

Skating away on the thin ice of a new day
Kudos
But this is an ineos publicity stunt, nothing more, nothing less..
It was to show or convince the goal of 2 hours was achievable- the pace was strictly set as such.
I expect 2 hours will start to fall under race conditions just as the 4 minute mile was once considered barely possible.
I haven't investigated but it wouldn't surprise me if it weren't that far out. The park run record is 13.48 I believe and he was almost doing that all the way. The 5000m world track record is 12.37 and around 13 mins on the road. He was doing 14.10 5k splits.
ETA - by faster time I should have said faster pace - 5k splits

This is a phenomenal achievement. I think its right its not raecognised IAAF world record due to the differences already mentioned. However he will always be the first man to run a sub 2 hr marathon and irrespective of the pacemakers etc he did physically run it.
This was a mind boggling bit of running to me, will be interesting to see how it affects official races and how long it’ll take for a sub-2hr race to take place in one.

He has been compared to Hilllary, Armstrong and Bannister, and I can see why. Amazing, historical achievement.
This video adds some perspective; I guess distance running is like racing cars: on TV you simply get no idea of how fast they actually are:

Incredible feat. I don't think I could have done it much quicker.
