    Another car thread....

I've got a BMW M5, it's the third one I've owned, and although I really enjoy driving it and listening to it, I need something a bit more practical, ideally something with a boot for the dogs.

My choices are the new Merc C63 estate, Audi RS4 estate or a BMW X3 M40i. Has anyone got any experience of them? What are your thoughts?

    Thanks 😊

Next to the shampoo and curlers...

I've had five M5s over the years, went to a 2014 RS4 for a couple years but boring as F.

The C63, and E63 in particular, get good write-ups.

Not quite in your league but I've got one of the new A6 Avants with the dual screen dash, same as A7 and A8.
Lovely car with loads of space in the back for my kids and dogs.

I really like the A6 Avant, I'm tempted to add the S6 or even RS6 to the list.

The RS4 feedback is good to now, they look good, sound good, but what's the point if you could be driving a 2l diesel?

Are you back in an M5?

Doesn't it just, but a new RS6 is a little beyond my budget.

Buy a Range Rover. I’m sure the dogs would appreciate the more sedate journey.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

X3M? Should be a good compromise for M performance and SUV styling..

That's exactly the reason not to buy one, every other car is a JLR car, maybe a slight exaggeration, but the point stands.

That's what I was hoping, maybe I need to accept that the days of owning a V8 need to be over?

Slightly off topic but how is the M5? Is it the F10 or F90 version?

If it helps, we changed an X5 (35) to a newer X4 M Sport.

Bit smaller, much quicker and averaging 38mpg as opposed to 23mpg.

It's my third one, speaks for itself, every time I come to change, I get another one.

It's the F10, I'm not sold on the F90 version, and it's really expensive. But the M5 is probably the best car I'll ever own, I doubt I'll get a car that I like as much, it looks good (in my opinion), it's quicker than most other cars you come across, it's incredibly comfortable and it sounds brilliant.

I agree with this; it looks good aside from the rear, specifically the detail around the exhausts and the bit in between.

If you regularly carry adult rear seat passengers don't consider the RS4, look at the RS6 or S6. Both will make you smile, the RS6 will make you laugh out loud.

As does +80k for an estate car.

Had an rs6 for the weekend a few weeks back as we’re looking at new car and what a car, I particularly like when it shuts down 4 cylinders for eco driving although I thought the boot would have been bigger, maybe on the small side for family with 2 kids

Just to edit op the rs4 is a boring car I wouldn’t bother

Unfortunately iv not had the privilege to own either but I think it has to be a choice between a RS6 or E63 estate.

If you are into modifications then you can really push the E63 to some serious BHP......... 1000+.

I assume your in Birmingham so MSL are on your door step.

    Good luck with the choice.

Alternatively you get yourself ready for the 3rd decade of this century and get an electric car. I test drove the I-pace last week, and it’s was superb fun to drive. 0-60 in 4.5s and instant throttle response means it’s probably faster than any of the previously mentioned cars in real world conditions. Reasonably practical compared with the other cars mentions though for us we needed something bigger (e-tron ordered instead).

I intend to drive a petrol car for as long as possible, the bigger the engine, the better.

    X3 M40i.

I can see us keeping ours for a few years, incredibly practical and plenty enough power not to be bothered by tailgating yobs in ‘hot hatches’.

Don’t buy without the adaptive suspension.

    It’ll do 30mpg.

It's the bragging which usually outs them. Someone with a small tool like Ally cannot live without showing off his Rolex watches and cars.

You are very strange Raffe , are you not concerned about your self ? Is this the life your parents would have chosen for you ? Try to let go ..find God or something or have a w@*k FFS .

What about a Skoda Superb Sportline Estate with the 280bhp engine. Huge boot, good performance, way better and cheaper than the BMW, Merc and Audi on fuel economy and a good looking motor too.

I recently bought the F90 M5 competition and it’s plenty practical with super car performance and handling. My 2 dogs are happy and comfortable in the back (with the appropriate seat protector). I have had many sports car “a over the years including the last 2 C63 AMG’s and a couple of more exotic cars. The M5 is by far the best car I have ever owned, astonishing thing!!

Good for you, going with a pure sports saloon, with two dogs of that size. I went the easy route with a G Wagen. Much slower, but perhaps a tad more suitable.

THe new X5 is a seriously decent car

They are proving popular - yet not flooding the market.

All sorts of options on power etc - and wont go wrong.
