Some may have a good singing voice but absolutely no soul.
Adele makes me want to scream.
Janis Joplin has it all and means it all.
Hope Sandoval of Mazzy star will melt any mans heart.
Then there is the beauty of Mary blacks haunting voice.
I would listen to Nina Simone read the shipping forecast on a loop.
and a bit of a left field choice but if you give her a chance Lorde has a very interesting voice, someone more musically literate can explain it better but she doesn't follow the usual beat or note pattern which can produce a nice change from the norm.

not sure if anyone has mentioned agnes obel -stunning voice .
This week I've been mostly listening to:
Anne Briggs
Cat Power
Gladys Knight
Etta James
Ann Sexton
Laura Nyro (in small doses)
Maxine Brown
Betty Lavette
Linda Jones
I am now slightly addicted to Natalia Lafourcade - she's a mexican pop star who has released 2 albums of classic Mexican folk/marichi music, both called Musas (unhelpfully). Probably a very acquired taste, but I love the music (and am normally a heavy rock guy!).
Two great female singers - Cat Power featuring Lana Del Rey. Cat Power is an amazing artist, beautiful and powerful vocals, great song writing too..

some possibly less well know, but i love them:
Kristina Train - Dark Black. Amazing voice and brilliant sound quality
Pink Nasty - Mold the gold
Beth Rowley - Little Dreamer
Priscilla Ahn - any album but my favourite is the soundtrack she made to an animated Japanese movie
And try the Cowboy Junkies 'The Caution Horses' album. If your music system is good then you may find this really hits the spot. Haunting female vocals
Ella Fitzgerald - on Vinyl, in a room with good acoustics, with a decent pair of Speakers and amp, if the hairs don't stand up on the back of your neck then there's something wrong with you...
On my system, Rega Elicit-r, Rega Saturn-r with Spendor A6R floorstanders
Kate Bush
Katie Melua
Karen Carpenter
Mama Cass
Norah Jones
Diana Krall
Carole King
Alison Krauss
Ninet Tayeb

I haven’t seen any mention of Laura Cantrell yet ...
Tracyanne Campbell from Camera Obscura and Tracyanne and Danny.
Sent from my iPhone using TZ-UK mobile app
For those into Karen Carpenter, try Harriet (link posted to avoid confusion with another artist with the same name):
http://www.harrietsmusic.com/.
If into jazz/blues try Maria Muldaur.
Anyone mentioned LP yet? (Laura Pergolizzi)
Just discovered her a wee while back and I think she's very good.
https://youtu.be/alIs8EOkzXk
Judy Tzuke
Joan Armatrading
Fergie
Skin
Sonja Kristina
Sonya Madan (Echo Belly)
Chaka Khan
Bobbie Gentry, start with the song and album Ode to Billie Joe
If you fancy trying some 'metal' to mix it up a bit, try out Floor Jansen now the lead of Finnish Symphonic metal band Nightwish.
She has an incredible mix of styles from operatic, growl and downright rock. Her voice is controlled and very musical.
This is her singing with ReVamp...

I’d offer Corrine Bailey Rae, but recently I’ve been listening to Lana Del Rey too.
Both can sound exquisite.
... also - early Morcheeba with Skye (Edwards) on vocals.

Some great female vocalists listed in this thread.
Without wanting to just regurgitate a list of all those mentioned so far I might add a couple which I don't think have been mentioned:
- curve ball and bit more modern : Bebe Rexha
- indie rock : Ellie Rowsell (lead singer of Wolf Alice)
- modern country/bluegrass : Lillie Mae
- blues rock : Joanne Shaw Taylor
Can't remember if Edie Brickell has been mentioned.
I'll also add
Brandi Carlile
Lucy Schwarz (listen to 'La Luna' on Youtube for a taste)
Elena Tongra - singer with Daughter (listen to 'Youth' on Youtube - a fantastic piece of songwriting)
Many great singers mentioned here but cannot see any mention of Aretha Franklin, I also have a soft spot for Kirsty McColl.
Neko Case is awesome, Susan Tedeschi (solo or Tedeschi Trucks Band), Elin Larsson (Blues Pills), Grace Potter is amazing and i may add to these as i think of more.
Here are a few more that I don’t think have been previously mentioned :
Sally Oldfield
India Arie
Aimee Mann
Sara K
Yuna
Rickie Lee Jones
Annie Lennox
Bebel Gilberto
Carmel
Clair Marlo
Eddi Reader
she's a bit bonkers now but this is sublime

I love The Navigator by Hurray For the Riff Raff, Alynda Segarra has a great voice, but this album is somewhat of a concept album so works great as a full listen, if anything better on LP as it is in two halves.
Here they are playing some of it live (some explicit language):
Jessye Norman is one of my favourite singers

dunk
"Well they would say that ... wouldn't they!"
Regina Spektor has always produced great music..Cracking vocals on 'Samson'
Something a bit newer and not mentioned so far - Haley Reinhart. Excellent Jazz singer.
This duet is phenomenal. Never heard of Haley Reinhart before, but that is one of the most impressive and enchanting voices I've heard:

She's amazing, I discovered here from this duet with Jeff Goldblum https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ipXA9lJzc0.
One of the best modern jazz singers in my mind.
Love the voice of Nataly Dawn of Pomplemoose (and those eyes..... )
