    Travel Insurance for over 80's

my father in law is 82 and has travel insurance on some Black credit card he has with Nat West

on a recent renewal I understand that due to his age/has a pacemaker, that they won't cover him now

He is planning a trip to the USA to stay with his daughter (my sis in law), but is struggling on the insurance front.

Anyone know of specialist cover / experience

    many thanks..

At 82 nearly everyone has to self insure and a trip to the US with an "incident" could cost him mega bucks. Best advice is get his daughter to come over her

There are loads of 80 plus ex pats in Spain having nightmares over this. They currently have EU cover but after that, goodness only knows.

Travel insurance at this sort of age is a nightmare especially with the pacemaker but just make sure he does not decide to travel especially to the US without cover.

My mum and dad are in their 80’s and do manage to get travel insurance (although not to the USA), think it is with Staysure or Allclear

There are "specialist" insurance companies, who "deal" with elderly customers and customers with pre existing conditions.

I used one a few years ago (sorry cant remember their name!) for my mother, who was late 70s at the time, plus she had alzheimers.

Maybe try putting the details into moneysupermarket and similar to get an idea who will provide the cover?

Worth putting the details into an online broker, if not a specialist on elderly travel insurance.

That said, a chap I know who is in his 80's who takes blood thinners could not get insured anywhere for travel to the US that he does regularly so he just chances it.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

That seems like a good price but Australia and the UK have a reciprocal agreement on healthcare so that may be in part why it's so cheap. If that's representative then insurance rates aren't anywhere near as high as I would have expected. My dad is 80 in a couple of years so this is good info

    Nor would I Mart.

A friend in the US recently had an emergency appendectomy. A few complications, but it came out at $98,000!

The old chap I refer to has a son in the US who is very wealthy and has said he would cover any of his medical bills which is why he does it.

Going anywhere, especially the US without adequate cover is just insane IMO.
    Cheers,
    Neil.
