I can’t watch it or I will have nightmares, fair play to him.
This is hard to watch! Fair play to John Noakes for going along with it.
Different world back then.

I recall watching that when it was broadcast. Gave me the willies.
I seem to remember he was usually up to some hair raising item.
My hands went clammy just watching that

I remember this at the time, pretty scary stuff with a ladder tied to the column and no safety ropes! One slip and you’re dead. And the cameraman did it too, presumably carrying the camera.
And those flares would be ‘dangerous’ anywhere 😂
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.
I don't mind heights generally, but watching that made me feel quite squiffy.
Reminds me of Fred Dibnah and his exploits!
That nuts. Hard to watch.
I still can’t watch it, pretty sure the BBC hadn't even insure him that day.
I never get tired of watching this clip. Nobody has mentioned his watch yet. Any idea what it is? There is a good glimpse of it at 7.46.

Shiny shoes & flares, hero status!
No rubber gloves when handling pigeon faeces…. Pfft
How we've went from that, and stuff like that was done by your average guy every day to the snowflake generation in such a short space of time I'll never know.
To be fair, life expectancy for the average bloke then was 68 in the UK and now it’s close to 80.
I remember watching that sequence as well. I more alarmed by it now.
Life expectancy today isn't down to what people did for a living, more to do with better diet, not as many folk smoking and such. Still places where I grew up where life expectancy for males is in the 50's
As compelling as this video is it's certainly not a great advert for the past. 4 guys needlessly risking their lives ultimately to save someone more senior paying for proper training and safety equipment.
Yes Health and Safety can go too far now but I'd rather that than Aberfan, Hillsborough, the Bradford City fire, The Herald of Free Enterprise, Formula 1 drivers expected to die for our entertainment, etc. These are the kind of outcomes that inevitably result from such a lax attitude to safety.

Whilst one can respect the balls of steel required I agree that it's a good film to show how far we've come and shows that not everything is elf and safety gawn mad. I also enjoyed the fact that I could see the window of my old office in the film - if I had been working there in 1977 I could have waved at them.
By 'eck Shep.
Yeah I remember that too. I'm watching it with fresh eyes now. In the 90's I was heavily into caving and did a lot of rope work. Just about every single thing they are doing is downright suicidal! I love the way he's only roped in when he gets to the top.
Good old Noaksey, much missed.
Someone mentioned Fred Dibnah. Another great Englishman. There's a fantastic story from Fred's early years where, under cover of darkness he carried a dummy up one of the local chimneys and left it sat on the top. Apparently it took the emergency services several days to retrieve what they thought was a suicidal man.
I saw this video the other day and thought it was bad but this is on another level.

This is the best screen shot I could get.
Recent forum history suggests it will turn out to be a Smiths or a Rolex.
Worth a repost I think
As someone who gets a little light-headed ascending a larger than average curb, Noakes demonstrates unfathomable levels of nonchalance
And there was a brave film crew to capture it all for our entertainment

If you think that's bad have a search for "bamboo scaffolding" on YT - the whole lot sways & is held together with bamboo strips. I once saw them build out from the top floor/roof & then drop a vertical down into thin air, a guy then shimmeyed down to the end & fixed a horizontal back to the building.
Reminds me of this.... definitely a job for the confident climber...

Or this.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.
Looks extremely dangerous without hi-vis and a safety helmet.
I start to get dizzy and vertigo just watching that shit. My brand of daring in the 1950s every summer...(might explain a few things!):
This....

A Yorkshire lad with nerves of steel.
If he had have fallen with that rope round his waist, life expectancy 15 mins.
As bad as drink driving is and I certainly would'nt condone any driving after 2 pints let alone 4 old adverts show what innocent times that were not that long ago, lack of internet and tech was no bad thing
Yes we live in a safer world but the internet combined with smart phones has changed us as a population, probably for the worst - even though I'm currently typing this on the internet I do look back to the 80's through to the 90's with rose tinted glasses..
