Well then, fellow denim aficionados, my 2 prs Hiut's have just arrived. I have one pair of Work Selvedge and one pair of Hack Selvedge. I followed the measuring instructions on the site and both pairs fit well, the relaxed fit is more relaxed, and the slim is err, slimmer. So far so good.
So what happens now?
Will they stretch?
They feel pretty comfortable - what's all this about break in?
Do I need to sit in the bath with them on?
I ordered 34/32, they come up a bit long in the leg - is that so I can do the turn up thing? If I don't want the turn up, is it socially acceptable to turn them up on the inside?
It says don't wash them for 6 months. How does that translate into wear-days?
They're 14.5oz denim, but they don't feel any different to my Nudie's
Will I be able to walk into Shoreditch and be accepted as an equal, or will the hipsters suss me out?
Turn ups on the inside? Maybe get them pressed with a nice crease down the middle while you are at it? :-)
Turning them under looks like a solicitor on dress down Friday, apologies if you are a solicitor.
They will stretch out a bit with wear but shrink back a little on their first wash. Leave it as long as you can before first wash, watch out for transfer of indigo onto furnishings and other clothes but I doubt Hiut overdye massively.
If they are overlong you can get them shortened and chain stitched but do that after any shrinkage, I just roll the turn up.
Solicitors have to wear chinos on dress down Fridays....
Just stumbled across this thread and wish I’d found it sooner.
Can I get some denim advice please.
I’ve bought Nudie jeans for the last 8 years but would like to try something a bit different. I’m London based for work and I’ve done some research and it looks like Son of a stag and Rivet and hide are 2 specialist stores that do a wide range of Japanese denim.
Has anyone been to these stores or are there others I should consider?
Are there any brands I should look out for?
Thanks
David

Thanks - I see thats had a thread resurrection. So far so good, but it's only a week or so. The freezer is full of cat meat so I'm not sure I'll find space, but maybe airing them on the line will help, but no bad niff so far.
On a non Jean but cool British gear front, anyone tried the HebTroCo? Might try a pair of the black canvas as a change from jeans.
Quality is excellent.... got the
Moleskins
Cords
Dark blue older guvnor canvas
New stone canvas jeans
Chinos
hmm writing that down was a bad idea... hence why i am annoyed as all are a bit big now.....
Have both straight cut and tapered.. lovely fit and well put together.
Reality sizing not vanity..
Also have the cord shirt/tshirts etc - very much a favourite shop
of mine now. Nice guys as well trying to put british manufacture
back on the map !
cheers

I’ll be interested to hear how the pockets hold up. I had three pair, and the pockets needed darned in no time at all. Twice each. I carry some loose change in my pockets, and it devoured the pockets.
Ok, they were fixed for free, but they went again in no time.
Such a shame as the jeans looked great, but that finished me with Hiut.
38” either 30 or 32 leg.
True 38 with a tape measure 😂
Cheers

I’m about to get my first pair of selvedge jeans but how do you stop any bleed into trainers, furniture and everything in between

G-star raw denim on Amazon deal of the day today. No idea of the quality but for £25 I’ll take a punt.
Inspired by this image I found myself, for the first time in about 30 years, with a needle and thread in hand making an attempt at a rustic style sashiko repair in a couple of kness that have seen better days after crawling around after my toddler! HAve to say that the first one is a bit sketchy, but I am legit pleased with my second attempt and can see this being wuite an addictive thing to get into!
Am I missing something? They all look like jeans usually do. If they have holes in them I would throw them away and surely by fades you mean starting to wear out.
This pair weren't dry. They're also not selvedge as I don't pay the premium for a bit of tape/ribbon stitched inside. I washed them twice in the first 18 months but they've been washed quite a few times since then.
I have a dry pair that I've had for a couple of years and they're fading differently. Dry are quite good but the amount starch added to them can be really high in some instances and can result in them bleeding a brown, sticky substance (starch) if they get a good drenching in the rain. Hasn't happened to me but I'm aware of it happening.
So if I was to buy dry again I'd probably soak them to remove a lot of the starch (turns the bath water brown) which kind of defeats the object, doesn't it?
I don't think I'll be buying jeans for a good while but I might try Edwin again next time as I think the quality of Nudie isn't what it once was.
Not how selvedge denim works. This article shows how and why there's a price premium. Although some manufacturers do take extreme liberties.

Extracted from that article....
”there may be many questions concerning the differences between selvedge and non-selvedge denim. One is not superior to the other in terms of quality and longevity. Moreover, the cotton and the dyeing processes used for selvedge are not necessarily different than those used for non-selvedge. In question of comfort, non-selvedge may offer somewhat more flexibility in fabric. However, selvedge is undeniably more desirable and attractive....”
So selvedge isn’t higher quality or dyed differently, just woven differently and fashionable.
Cheers, I never heard of manufacturers adding starch to a dry selvedge, well at least not the likes of Cone Mills or Japanese producers. I’m aware though that some people starch their jeans to get crispier whiskers/honeycombs which is another matter and a completely separate topic. Dry, unsanforised denim will bleed indigo, and if it’s an natural one it may contain impurities which can be perceived as brown I suppose but never sticky. May be it’s a crotch and arse gunk/cheese if they been worn for a few months before they got soaked/washed? ;)
Also, if it’s not a pair of selvedge jeans turning the bottoms up is totally defeats the purpose IMO since it’s done to show off the selvedge edge and signal to the fellow denim aficionados what you’ve got, well in addition of cause to wear them as it was done when jeans were just a ‘tool’ pants made out of dry selvedge denim as no other kind of denim was available at the time.. :))
