I found a decent Wenger daysack in the local TK-Max. Worth a look.

Have recently changed jobs and find myself in need of a smart rucksack. Doesn't need to be too big. Needs to be a dark colour and preferably with subtle branding.
Any recommendations gratefully received.
Thanks

Tumi has always been my go-to but not cheap. I’ve also added an Osprey to the mix, not as subtle but it’s mostly black & the comfort is out of this world vs the Tumi.
See a lot of commuters with Osprey bags, guessing there is a reason why.

This one works for me. Available from Amazon.

Depends on your budget. Filson are always a good shout.
Thanks for the suggestions so far. Will have a look at Wenger and Osprey.
Those Chapman bags are lovely. If I was getting the benefit then they might be an option. But for work they are just too expensive.

Have a look at Trakke. Very sturdy, smart looking with subtle branding.
Very impressed with my Bannoch. That I picked up on SC recently.

Try one of these - Riut bag - the zips are against your bag which makes it much safer when carrying on your bag. Subtle detailing a couple of sizes to choose from.
I've had one for about 3 years now and love it.

Messenger bags are better unless you need to carry a change of clothing.
I have one of these. Suitably classy so as to differentiate from all the 'me too' bags but also well made. Baobao Daypack by Issey Miyake.

£792 for a rucksack? Blimey!
The new Arc'teryx Granville 16 - https://www.arcteryx.com/gb/en/shop/...6-zip-backpack
Or the Nomin if you really need to spend €800.... https://www.veilance.com/nl/en/shop/nomin-pack
I have an older granville which is super comfy plus great waterproofing.
Are those prices spoofed?
I’ve had a few expensive backpacks in my time but they are taking this to a whole new level.

Have a look at GoRuck. An American brand with lifetime warranty. https://www.goruck.com/our-rucksacks/
Brooks make some lovely gear though you do pay for it.

And as an Aussie I have to recommended crumpler. Great hard wearing bags

I use a Pakuma messenger bag, which is also suitable for use as a laptop bag. It is still going strong despite over 10 years of heavy use.
You either want a rucksack or you want something smart.
If 20l is big enough consider a nice real leather messenger bag, I’ve a modest Jasper Conrad from Debenhams for circa £70 but many years ago, I love the patina and ageing of the leather, if you need larger take a look at Dakine backpacks, I’ve had one for 9 years as my daily gym bag and it’s still holding up supremely well.
Lots of great suggestions and some notable brands I've never heard of.
In the end I bought a Wenger online at TK Maxx.
Less money spent on the rucksack means more available for watches...! Have my eye on a Sinn 857 UTC LH.
Thanks all.

Spending £800 on a rucksack... Just when you think you've seen it all.
I use a Salamander leather satchel for work, functional and smart. 5 years on and it's still going strong. And for only £50.
I'm happy with my kanken
Recently bought one of these http://www.woodhornvwrally.co.uk/bac...-mao-3767.html but not from this firm. Well bade, nice soft but tough leather . Also noticed Timberland ones in TK Maxx recently which seemed good as well.
I carry my laptop and work stuff in a Rains black waterproof back pack

I just got an Invisible Rolltop from Opposethis.

Really well made, smart, no branding and very happy with it.
I can’t imagine spending a fortune on hand luggage or a rucksack for a day to day commute. If I left a bag on the bus or train, or got mugged, the only thing I want to be worrying about is the contents not the bag itself!!?? - and as I only tend to carry a packed lunch and a book a nondescript £20 Nike job does the trick!

I’m a cheapskate, I use a Targus rucksack that my work provides, does the job of carrying their crap laptop and my valuable lunch
I got this from Rev-O on sales corner, vintage Norwegian Army Patrol Pack £45 absolute bargain.
