Love these, possibly too small.

A tuna of some kind should be in your budget especially second hand. (Would be Quartz though but they are very good Quartz watches)
If you want to go for ‘very original’ styling then the Hamilton Ventura is also in that price bracket. Nothing looks like a Ventura (for good reason)
I've just purchased a Certina DS PH200M reissue.... excellent value for money at circa £560.
Certina is a great call. How about Halios Seaforth? Aevig's Thor looks very nice if you want retro style without aping something else altogether.

I'm following with interest...!
Obvious choices include Seiko and Orient - maybe citizen if you like the style / quartz.
Jump onto kickstarter and filter by watches - that's always good for a few hours.
xeric do some very original looking watches - marmite though.
Zinvo blade
basically take a look on watches.com (new watchissmo site) - they aren't haute horology but there are some very out there designs to counterpoint the more traditional seiko / orient suggestions.
Also there is the whole boctok amphibia sub culture, you could fill your boots for £500, i'd ignore vostok europe though, seem rather overpriced to me.
There are other russian / eastern bloc watch manufacturers.
Have you seen lorier watches? They are around $400. I think their falcon model looks great. They are fairly pricey considering they have a Seiko nh35 movement but if I had the money to spend I would definitely be picking one up.
I am new to the forum and am not sure how to add an image but here is a link to the watch I am talking about

Wow thanks for responses. Loving the vostock (bostocks?) Amphibia plus some others on googe search and they seem quite cheap too !! There must be catch? Quality any good ?

‘BOCTOK’ is close to the original Cyrillic, but pronounced Vostok. They are robust and reliable, easy to modify and very popular on the forum. Experts such as Lampoc and others can tell you all about them.
In terms of quality, they are generally well made and with some good design features only found in much more expensive dive watches. That said, don’t expect high end finishing and make sure you take a look at the ‘wobbly crown’ on Youtube before buying. Another clever design feature but not to everyone’s taste. Time keeping is probably in the +/-10spd range so similar to Seiko 5.
I have a vintage one that I recommissioned myself with some help from the forum and I swim and snorkel with it a lot - absolutely love it.
Seen some really retro vostock amphibians on ebay/amazon. Wasnt planning on another diver but i might have to, loads of choices

Whilst their watches are great value, I personally would not want to be spending money in Russia at the moment.....
Secondhand Oris TT1 Diver?
seiko turtle?
McManus? great quality as it has more jewels........more than rolex.......
Farer have some very nice, distinctive designs.
I actually met Charlie Fowler, the founder of Alkin watches last week, and had a look at his Model One in depth.
This is definitely one of the best value individually designed watches I have come across.
Really nice bloke too. I will be getting one o the PVD ones with a lume dial after Christmas.
Dave
Vostok would be my call as well, you can buy shed loads of bezels and swap them every day :-)
Scottie
Thanks for all these suggestions, really loving that Certina and Oris diver ...but I've fallen down a vostok / meranom rabbit hole. Am planning an amphibian mod in 2019 as it all seems like good fun for not much £. Decided on case style 100 with new bezel, nato and possibly a dial change. (I can't source the dial I REALLY like tho).

I know they have their fans on here, but I really can’t see the attraction with Vostocks. I sorted a few out for a guy last year , after working out how they come apart etc it wasn’t too difficult, but there’s really no quality about them. Seikos are far far better watches.
Best way to spend £500 is on something second hand......and try looking beyond divers!
Tissot seastar? Or is that too similar to a DSSD?
Maen Hudson Auto is available in 38 or 42mm. At €499, they are within budget.

Love that Maen, not heard of them before.
Also liking the baltic aquascaphe

Meranom can supply any dial (but not SE), you just have to put it in the notes when you order this:

Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
One of these as a beater perhaps? Proper retro as featured in The Big Lebowski!
