Just put my rates up 30% and nobody has flinched, they were a bit on the low side anyway so should have done it sooner.
I’m still waiting for the department I’ve moved into (May) to get my pay right. Been a
Civil Servant since 2000 and not expecting a life changing pay increase. Been an HEO since 2013.
The Unions are a waste of time. All this we’re in it together is also a load of rubbish.
Different departments pay different rates for Grades which is not right notwithstanding shift disturbance allowances or specialisms.
Should have been an MP, they’re laughing!
Only another 20yrs!!!!!!!
IT - 3%, which was better than many colleagues because of performance related increases, but bonuses were down quite significantly, and they can make up to 1/3 take home, so actually I earned slightly less than last year!
2% if you do a decent job, if you don't 0%

IT (software company) - 2.5% though annual bonuses were slashed this year, most got 3% (me inc.) or less with a few lucky ones getting 10%
The wife works part time for the NHS. She just got a rise of 30p/hr.
I just got a new job with a 40% pay rise. Best way to do it

Just found out my new employer (large multinational tech company) doesn’t do cost of living/inflationary increases. Their bonus scheme is also 5%, if you are lucky.
Can’t wait to join them!

Yes in SE. I’m in central London but the new job is in Windsor.
Thanks a lot. Spent the last few years being very strategic about the roles I took. ‘Aggressive progression ‘ has been my motto but had to be careful I didn’t get too far ahead of myself. New goal is to get to Director by 43. I’m 38 now so I think its a reasonably modest goal.
Good luck mate. What do you do?

They have won the contract, just going through the TUPE motions at the minute. Not only are the financials poor compared to my current package, the organisation seems less than interested in its employees.
Could always leave, but would rather be pushed with 20 years service. I’ll give it 6 months and reappraise.

Apply for a directorship in the nhs...an exec one...they set their own pay rises during the remuneration committee meetings...

I’ve focussed more on interesting jobs and have had some amazing roles. I’ve also had to prioritise family while the kids are young. As a consequence my progression is probably about one grade behind my peers. My career goal was Director General and with 20 years at least to work isn’t beyond the realms of possibility. I’m not sure now though if I want the hassle. I tend to focus on roles rather than grade so I’ll see what comes up. Plenty of interesting DD roles around.
Promotion does seem the only way to increase pay in the public sector and unfortunately looking around I can see many colleagues that have been over promoted and are struggling.
Being happy in your job is the most important thing. I’ve always told myself I’ll only go as far as I can without sacrificing my home life. I have gone for roles that are challenging and so have also been interesting. Once I’m online more than I’m working it’s time to move on as I get bored once I do what I set out to do and everything is running well.

I've just received a pay rise of about 13% this year. Not bad, but I think it has more to do with the fact that I was underpaid to begin with, and am still being underpaid now.
With a new MD starting soon though and a new job title, I'm hoping for an opportunity to renegotiate.
I used to be with a subsidiary of BT the pay raises there was poor. After they made use all redundant I learnt that good pay was no good if it didn’t make you and your family happy!
I’m now self employed, for me this was the best way to go. I am a self employed franchisee with a second company I own as well both companies work well together as they hot different times of the day. I now earn more than at BT working 4 maybe 5 hours a day!

Unfortunately the majority of the UK population are in the same boat as you, there is no simple answer as far as I can see but that doesn't make it right of course! When I was working for large companies/organisations I used to focus on stuff I could influence, I'd usually rise quite quickly to the top of the pay scales and grades for the job did, after that it was downhill all the way with below inflation raises year on year. The best thing that happened to me was getting made redundant the fourth time in a row (over a period of decades I'll add), that was the final kick up the arse I needed to get out of my comfort zone and start my own business.
3.1% is the average rise at the moment.
I got 3%. IT worker.
I think I need to consider giving myself a pay rise next year - but I’m finding that taking more time out (apart from the current forced few weeks) is more rewarding - who knows what the future holds.
It's just a matter of time...
Not had a payrise in nearly 5 years. I'm marine crew (dynamic positioning officer) and we're seen as, and I quote "a necessary evil" by oil and gas companies as we in their eyes don't directly contribute to the money making side of the industry. In one company just before getting laid off they took off what they considered bonuses and reduced my wage by about 40%. To be fair that happened to nearly everyone regardless of department. Now with thousands of guys sat on the beach and a huge influx of cheap (generally badly trained & skilled) labour from Russia and Ukraine our rates are going to be kept artificially low for years. I'm employed now and hopefully I can keep this job for a few years but I'm looking for an out before the next downturn comes along. Not much a seafarer can do in the east midlands though
I think the marine aspect of offshore work is starting to pick up, and do think the wages will also increase, as most of the guys who were laid off, have out of necessity - moved to other work at home. Two things are against them returning: They have let their certification lapse, and they have got used to home-life (and a third - some have said “to hell with that industry”)
The union have been in this week about pay talks. They are asking for a 6% rise, shorter working week, better bonus system etc etc.If we got 3% I'd be happy.
Before i started my current job, in 2015, i hadn't had a rise on my basic wage since 2008
Any chance of up-skilling yourself in the same industry.
One thing I do know is that even with 40% cut, a typical O&G worker will still be on a multiple of average wage.m
Plus it’s only temporary. Oil price has now recovered, demand for labour is strong and contract rates are on the up
I was on £67k last year, got a 10% rise to £70k this year, will probably get the same next year. I employ my wife as my office manager at £50k and my two kids at £30k each. I have a fabulous expense account and they even serve subsidised alcohol in the bars ar work. I bought another house to have a place closer to work, and work pays for the mortgage, furnishings, improvements etc. No expense is spared. The house is now worth £150k more, so I shall sell it soon. Yes, I'm an MP.
Reality is that I got 2.3% this years after years of no rises as I am at the top of the pay spine for my grade. I have cut my days down to 4 a week. My pension arrangements were changed to my detriment. To make up for the losses I am stealing the office furniture to sell. I need to stop though as the office is beginning to look like a Travelodge room. I am too old for other employers to be interested in me, and the age of everything we use has meant I have been de-skilled.
Health sector.
Our convenor is a good un but you're right about being toothless. If we wanted an overtime ban we'd have to tell them so far in advance it wouldn't matter.
Last year as part of the package they took 4 apprentices on which we were happy about and a bonus which was a real puzzle in that as long as we weren't off more than twice in a quarter we'd get an attendance bonus.
The last bit was a real head scratcher???
3% rise this year and another 3% from next April as all part of the last pay deal . Mind you there has been no increase in London Weighting for years.. This is for team members in BT..
The managers are going through a re banding exercise right now and a lot of them are getting shafted with lower bands or pay ‘splines’ or losing their jobs altogether . TBF though BT have far too many middle managers...

Since 2008 I had 2 pay rises, the last was about 1%. I did get the odd discretionary bonus for signing new contracts but they were worth only thousands for the millions in new business won. Which is why I decided to retire early.
So no pay rises for me for another 9 years when I can collect my OAP. Assuming it still exists .

Another nil pwont year for me, 3rd or 4th I’m a row, further delaying me getting a speed master
15% but I haven't had one for 5 years previously. Nice though , I didn't have to ask or negotiate.
Valid points especially for those with transferable skills, engineers & elecs for instance. I've been pretty lucky to be honest and was redundant for about 6 months before getting another gig. The main issue is the fact that companies are looking for the cheapest labour as its all about the bottom line which you can't blame them for as its all about making money. This will come at a cost though either through increases in incidents, maintenance costs increasing due to lack of planned maintenance being carried out and general lowering of standards across the board.
That is true but employers are slow to transfer those increases to the work force. For me to try to go for my next cert of competency will cost me approx. £10k and that not including the loss of wages while doing it. Financially I actually can't afford to try to better myself professionally at present. It is true that I still earn above national average but it comes at a cost (time away from home, dangerous environments / travel etc) which I obviously undertake.

Having moved from the private sector to the public sector I miss the bonuses and freebies. There used to be christmas bonuses, summer balls, christmas functions, sales bonuses, even for us "engineering' types. I once remember being handed Argos vouchers. There were company cars if you needed one. One company offered me unlimited free private use on their bill.
The public sector gold plated pensions are mostly a myth unless you are high up in the system. For those of us on the "shop floor" pensions are very thin. The cutbacks in my industry are such that we even have to clean our own offices now. Training has been cut back to the bone. Mandatory training only. I was told that I could have as much training as I wanted as long as it was free and there were no travel costs incurred. It seems a strange way of investing in your workforce. If you speak out you get told that someone has placed an unofficial complaint about you. When someone leaves the post is usually re-graded down a point on the ladder. The new person then gets even more responsibilities heaped on them. I am hanging about for the redundancy that they will eventually have to start handing out.
All views are my own.
Fighting for a 10% pay rise in Scotland as a Principal Teacher...strikes are looming after a much larger than anticipated protest in Glasgow a couple of weeks ago.
Been told we're getting a 3.5% rise across the board which I'm happy with as i went 8 years without an increase on my basic wage.
Also £200 Xmas bonus and a reduction in the working work to 35 hours, possibly over 4 days.
