Show us your Grand Seikos THREAD

There seems to be some interest in GS at the moment on the forum. I thought a GS reference thread may be of interest.

GS model references are difficult to remember so please post the watch reference with the pictures.

    I will start...

SBGH001 Hi beat movement with a silver dial that almost always looks white.

Currently have my Snowflake on a blue Hirsch strap. Looked at getting a peacock. Liked it but didn't love it; if one appears on the SC at some point I might think again. Currently I want the titanium spring drive GMT with the ceramic bezel. That is liable to change with my mood

Does anyone here have any experience of the Quartz versions and if so what do you think of them?

They workmanship is what you would expect of GS. The movement is simple and built to last. It does not have a perpetual calendar and the hour hand can not be moved in discrete hourly steps like it can on the Citizen Chronomaster. You can however pretty much expect it to run reliably during your lifetime with the occasional battery change and seals.

Yep and I think they are great. The size is perfect, beautifully finished and a great pick up and go watch.

A new 253 manual wind, which I just sold, to help reduce the collection. I've had all the varieties, all of which have their charms. Grand Seiko make lovely watches.
However, they still seem to me interesting alternatives, rather than obviously superior to their Swiss competitors. I don't think they have yet equalled a Date-just (for Instance) as a great all-rounder. The manuals are wonderfully elegant, and you could argue still the most stylish model GS make. But I think their quartz models are perhaps the best choice.
You get the brilliantly finished cases and the great F9 movement. That's where I would start, if only because it's cheaper. Then on to a spring-drive, just for the technology. All good, if getting a touch pricey.

I would love a 40mm GS spring drive diver as the current size is too big for me.

All but one of mine vintage.

    Grand Seiko Self-dater from 1965

    6145-8050 GS high-beat from 1972

    A 6245-9001 from 1968

And the modern reinterpretation of the first, a SBGV009.

My first - arrived this week, a 9F62 quartz SGBX061. At 37mm I knew it was stepping back to a size I haven't worn for what seems like years now... but its a lovely thing to live with. You barely notice you are wearing it. It is supremely comfortable.

I am fascinated by the attention to detail in making this caliber. I mean... growing your own quartz?!!

About time 'Tiny' showed us his 117 quartz dive watch; discontinued, which is a real shame. In many ways quartz is perfect for more rugged activities.
