No pics but my first motor was a dark green mini van.

The head gasket went so me and mate spent a long afternoon fitting a new one.

Then I lent it to a mate and he filled it with diesel by mistake so it needed a new engine. Guess how much that cost? £70 for the re-con 1000cc engine and £30 to fit. Them were the days

It also eventually needed two new welded A-panels on the front doors and new back doors. It lasted me 3 years before rust finally did for it and it had to be scrapped. It was great fun though.

Fiat Cinquecento Sporting, bought new in 1997 and I still have it to this day - not that it has turned a wheel since about 2004, but I plan on get it running for its 21st birthday next year! Wonder how many 1 owner Cinqs are out there?
Many people over the years have told me they wish they had kept their first car, which is why I never sold mine. I went all over Europe in that thing. I drove a Seicento earlier this year and it was not how I remember, but cars have moved on a lot in 20 years!

Mk1 VW Scirocco 1.6GLi

Fast as F***! (or so I thought).

Hugely entertaining to drive, especially in slippy conditions - wet or ice. I managed a full 360 spin at about 5 mph down the centre of a quiet road one Winter (twitchy bum time!).

Far too much car for me at the time (I was 22 and had passed my test about 4 months earlier) but I loved it.

1967 Old English White 850 Mini, bought in 1975

Sliding windows, Cord pull door handles and floor mounted switch for dip/full beam....and a very temperamental fuel pump fixed by feeling behind the rear bumper
and giving it a thump

1972 Vauxhall viva hc 1256cc in Henly blue cost me £300.00 put 3 gearboxes in it when you could go to a scrap yard and have a good rummage and a few bits in your pocket and toolbox them where the days.

My first car was a Ford Corsair, almost identical to this one, even down to the Zodiac wheel trims which were a must in those days. Halogen days Rodney, halogen days!

A Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 CD. It looked almost identical to the car pictured here, right up to the point when it ended up on its roof in the Scottish borders after I skidded on ice on a bend.

Passed my test in 1975 aged 17, and bought a 1967 Mini 850 the week after. Kept it 15 months, did a lot of miles in it, but hated the damned thing. Slow, noisy, heater was crap, it drank almost as much oil as petrol, it let water in, but it never let me down. Had some good times with the car, you always remember your first one.....but I also remember being glad to see the back of it in late '76!

Next car was a blue Hillman Avenger, sheer class after the Mini!

Austin 1100,this little lady could tell some right tales.

I remember those from the 60s. My dad had one an 1100. BRG with tan vinyl upholstery. Overhere those cars were known as Austin Glider. Around the 80K kms/50K miles, the decay started... broken driveshaft, electrical problems etc. He replaced the car with a new Toyota Corolla (1970) and never looked back.

Funny thing is, my dad added some instruments, those infamous Smith's heater on the back window. He'd added a red light as a warning light, but was not happy with the bright red spot on the dash and replaced it for an amber light. When he replaced the red light it went in a box in on shelf, where I found it after my dad had passed away. The light is currently serving as a warning light for the electric fan in my TR3A.

Old English White 1959 Ford Popular 100E - 832 FYA, purchased by my father as a gift for me (but strangely I still had to pay him back).

1072 cc sidevalve engine, 3 speed gear box, vacuum powered windscreen wipers. I fitted a straight through exhaust, moon discs, a metal sun visor and an Aquaplane in/out manaifold complete with twin SU's.

Didnt go any faster, but it still used to get me into the Battersea Car Park on the Chelsea Cruise nights.

I loved that car.

I had three of them; the first was a red 1.9, the second a light metallic green 1.9 auto and the third a diamond white 1.8.

The five cylinder cars sounded awesome but the four pot from the Golf gti was a much better car.

The Quattro was the car I lusted after in those days but had to do with the GT. I stripped the engine and re-shimmed it as when I got it it was running a bit rough. It also had a fuel leak which I never managed to find and sort as I then had to get rid of it, it was replaced with a bog standard bottom of the range 205 company car

Sad to say first car was a Fiat 126, known as the Fiat worse than death.It was terrible,accelerator peddle jamming in snowy weather was fun.It eventually died of rust.Replaced by an Austin Maxi ,which I liked but also succumbed to the tin worm.
Interestingly saw a classic car ad for a Fiat 126 with a Kensington mews garage,I e mailed the guy and said I now I'd seen everything,to his credit he took it in the right spirit.

No, not really...

Technically my first car was an old Volvo 240 saloon that I bought prior to passing my driving test for £200 from a relative in the trade, one I found out how astronomical the insurance was I sold it for a profit having never driven it.

So my real first car was a red Talbot horizon hatchback and it was utterly awful. However as I lived 10 miles from the nearest public transport (actually there was one bus a fortnight to take the old ladies to Norwich shopping) so the Talbot was my first taste of freedom and I absolutely adored it.
The car was given to me free as it only had a few months MOT left and no chance of passing another. Between my village and the main road was a 4 mile long and rather muddy 'green lane' so I used to rally the little Talbot down there on my was to college, it taught me a lot about car control..... After a few months the suspension was rather knackered! The final straw was when the accelerator fell of on the A12 one day and I had to tie it back on using wires I ripped from the back of the stereo.

Amazing, I had one exactly the same colour for my 5th or 6th car back in 1996. It was a 1980 Audi GT5 Fi E coupe, 2150cc iirc.bought from a retired chap for a measly £300. It was bought on a whim to replace a horrid nova that broke terminally while on holiday. I was 21 and the group 18 insurance was £1800! Sadly the insurance came in handy as I crashed it the same day into some slightly erratic Germans in a fiesta. The Audi ended up having a bar welded behind the bumper then being winched straight tied between a Land-rover and a tree before some headlights from an old VW were fitted. It never drove the same again, the fuel leaks meant I couldn't risk smoking in it and the broken engine mount made a racket under acceleration. When it failed it's MOT I abandoned it on the seafront in Brighton for a while and I think tramps occasionally slept in it. Eventually I sold it off to a local garage for £60.

Fiat 850 Coupé. Pretty little thing, Bertone bodywork, air-cooled rear engine. Seemed quite quick considering it only boasted 47hp. Got quicker the longer I had it due to weight reducing through galloping corrosion.

1975 Triumph Toledo, the poor mans Domomite.

I spent many happy hours in Liverpool scrap yards removing the dash and 6 segment warning display from a Dolomite 1850.

The C pillar and boot badges were the give away.


Followed by a 1976 VW Scirocco mk 1A, with vertical front indicators, this was written off in a collision with a drunk driver.

The insurance and injury compensation paid for a VW Golf Mk 1 campaign model in red, the one car I wish that I had kept !

Earlier today, when I was googling for a stock picture of my first ever car, I stumbled across this:



A fold-your-own Fiat 126. After I brought my daughter to bed, I started to assemble it.









Took 25 minutes to build, next time I would take a bit thicker paper and would spend a bit more time pre-folding along the lines (or just read the instructions). Anyway, a cool memory of my first car 33 years ago.

Suppose this one will live until my daughter gets up tomorrow morning....

My first car was an MG1100. Basically the same as the Austin 1100, but with a twin SU carb set up, and a bit sportier head Some minor improvements inside as well. Loved the thing, bought it for £60 which I'd saved up from working part time at Kwik Save after school and weekends.

Wow, truth be told I only had the GT for all of a month before I ended up with a company car so had to get rid of it. It cost me £1750 and I got rid of it a month later for £1500, think the chaps who bought it took it to Ireland.

When they came to view it because of the fuel leak I had to make sure that I started and ran it for it while, it was parked on my uncles driveway at the time and thinking 15 minutes was more than enough time to get it started I proceeded to jump start it. The damned think wouldn’t start so I cranked and cranked but never noticed that the cheap jump leads were literally melting and then eventually burst into flames as the car started and the chaps appeared at the same time.

They still took the car.

Peogeot 104 estate, awful car, gearstick used to come away in your hand, but you could fit most of a motorbike in the back...replaced with a brand new Lancia Beta Spider 2000 thanks to Maggie.

Vauxhall Chevette 1300 L in gold with biege interior, it made a striking contrast next to my Dads Limeflower Maxi 1750, which I think was destined to be my first car..thankfully the insurance was going to be to much...phew.

My first car was a Y reg Fiesta 1.1l which was actually quite nice to drive but had the build quality of a deck of cards. Manual choke and brake pedal that you had to push right into the floor - it had loads of small things going wrong with it and I said to myself I'd never buy a Ford again. I never did, but I quite like the look of the new 2017 Fiesta that's just come out.

I am just about to send my 1.6 GTi away for paint following its restoration.

I had a red 1.6 as my first car (first that I fully bought and owned myself). A few years ago I woke up following a dream about that car and decided I should buy another. Fortunately this was when they were still dirt cheap.

Its even better to drive than I remembered.
