A Junghans Max Bill Auto would tick all your boxes without being remotely like an Explorer!
I have been toying with a Rolex Explorer but, don't laugh, wanted to practice with a cheaper no date watch to make sure I can cope without a date on my wrist having had one for my entire adult life.
Funds are low at the moment so buying used isn't a go-er currently as I am hoping to make a 'celebration purchase' in the spring (along with some associated cash).
I was too slow for the recent Railmaster on SC (and short in funds) but it got me thinking. What could I get to test it out?
Requirements:
- time only, no date, no chrono
- 38-40mm in size
- legible as my eyes are starting to go
- not too hard to find
- Not quartz
(Yes that is a Rolex Explorer so far...but)
- 'affordable' which I guess means <£500 (but pref less)
Does anything spring to mind?

Good suggestion. In a previous buying mood I was obsessing over a Nomos Orion so familiar with the style.

Anything flieger basically. You could have a new archimede with a 2824 for fractionally over your budget.
+1. I have the smaller hand wound. Its great!

If you want to stray into the more sleezy area of the internet, eBay has a zeno explorer currently at £200 with a buy it now of £300

I agree! The only trouble is finding one now as I think I bought one of the last ones! Sorry.

Its the watch I always nearly buy after a few pints.
Just to close this thread. My WTB came through and I took delivery yesterday. Still experimenting with the best straps but I think an antique leather strap will be the winner.

Sorry, a bit late to this thread buy just wanted to give the Zeno Explorer another mention for archive purposes. 36mm which is unusual these days. Available new from Time Design. One of the few watches I can actually wear on a bracelet without it driving me crazy or looking as though I am wearing my Dads watch.
That Everest looks great, I always intended to try one but haven't got around to it yet...
Enjoy!
Not totally relevant to this thread but 'no-date' always piques my interest, however the crux of it for me is that the movement itself has no date complication as opposed to using a mechanism with a date concealed by the dial e.g. eta 2801 opposed to eta 2804, or I suppose eta 2821 rather than 2824. Not certain with the latter though whether the base movement is the same configuration.
My point is the same though, a concealed date complication is not a no-date, it's merely obscured and I for one would be forever bothered about that.
I can't see that many brands would assemble with a stock movement and make the effort to actually remove unused complications. One that does spring to mind though is the Corvid Automatik from Aevig, in which I'm informed they have removed the date complication from the STP1-11 movement.
I'd certainly be interested in others that members might be able to add to that.
A good point I think.
My main issue with dates is the fact that I struggle to see the damn things even wearing my glasses, hence the small useless window (that also ruins the symmetry of the dial) is a constant source of irritation to me.
The movements in my current group of watches don't have date complications under their windowless dials - Zex, CWC, Sturmanskie.
The Tudor Heritage Ranger is a superb watch, although it is 41mm...
