New one on me.
Currently in a bar in KL called Tate that has no signs above the door and no advertising close by. I've walked past it a few times without knowing it was there. Got told about it tonight so thought I'd give it a go.
Might have to start finding others now...

I'd never heard of them until a couple of years back until I had one of the most memorable nights of my life. Below a tiny juice bar in Covent garden, a tiny bare brick room about 20ft x 14ft, full of my friends, loaded up with bottles of spirits the bar staff mixed us up all sorts of stuff whilst we listened to our favourite music. Wicked night. Not sure I'd ever find it again!
Found one in Newcastle. It was full of bearded men wearing small (33mm) vintage watches and uber cool women (tattoo + piercings) wearing 40mm plus watches. Its the most watches I've seen on people's wrists for ages. Maybe they're becoming 'cool' again?
A friend of mine is a commercial interior designer, and this is the look all his clients want now. Whiskey barrels up against the walls, dark lighting, staff in aprons etc. I quite like the feel of it I must admit.
Went to one in Manchester a few weeks ago, first time I have heard that expression outside of a film! Somewhat bizarre expierence, but seemed to put the interest back into going to a bar.

There is one in Liverpool called Berry and Rye - it's just a door in a wall.
I'm in Manchester right now with the wife. Just been in Dusk till pawn in the northern quarter (one of Manchester's 'secret bars' ) but couldn't get in the wash house - it's pre book only in there.
There are loads about town. Great fun but a decent premium on the prices... :/
There's a great one in Bristol, no signage at all. Likewise further afield in NYC there are some top ones too.
'Milk and Honey' in Soho makes a great cocktail and I think was one of the first speakeasy bars. Have to book in advance and then find it.
Sorry to ask a silly question, but just for clarity, are these legal and licenced "proper" bars?

These have been all the rage in Beijing for a while now. It's unusual to go to a bar you don't have to enter via some secret entrance behind a bookcase in a cafe! Quite fun when there were one or two but now it is a bit silly really.

Milk Thistle? It was a Gentleman's club (19th century variety!) …. Very cool…. Proper bar staff who know how to make a drink…. I went to another one up by the park in Clifton, which was also very good

Arriving late in Pula a couple of years ago, all cafés and bars closed, we were directed by the hotel to a magical little bar, no signs outside, knock three times, brilliant night.
Years ago in Liverpool if we wanted further post-pub lubrication but didn't want a shiny bar or club, we went to Cassa's (The Casablanca) on Hope Street. I think it's an official bar/pub now but back then it was a just a house. You'd knock on the door and a guy would peer out the window to check you out and either open the door or tell you to do one. Inside it was dark, dirty and loud, and you'd always regret it the next morning.
Had some great nights in there though.
Some of the best bars in London are, or have, "speakeasy" bars:
- 69 Colebrooke Row has no name
- Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town is entered through a fridge
- Callooh Callay's main space is through a wardrobe (and used to have another secret bar upstairs called the JubJub)
- Discount Suit Company still looks like a shop from the outside
- Milroys of Soho's Vault Bar is entered via a bookcase
- Nightjar is pretty hidden at street level (I still walk past it, instead of in to it)
If it's a fad, it's a long-running one.
The luggage room in Mayfair was really good for proper cocktails last time I went, but it's practically on grosvenor square so obviously very expensive.
I've been to couple in Manchester but couldn't tell you now what they were called. If I remember rightly, one was above a skateboard shop in the northern quarter.
